May 16, 2007, 12:02 p.m.A smart move, honestly. He would have been a distraction as well as a target.

May 16, 2007, 6:07 p.m.Well duh! This is what happens when you blab to the whole world that a potential heir to the British throne is going into combat. I think this may have worked if they kept it on the down-low-- Common sense tells you he would become a sought-after target once news confirmed he would fight.

May 16, 2007, 7:25 p.m.If he wants to fight for his country, I believe he should be aloud to do so.

May 16, 2007, 8:19 p.m.Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! What has happened to the Brittish army and the royal family? "A Prince of the Blood is coming. Who is the target NOW?" This is the attitude required for a good monarchy. Lead. Go in, take charge, and come out with the desired result. And if this prince can't do it, there are several others.

May 16, 2007, 9:39 p.m.Suprise, Suprise!!!!
I guess the royals are too good to fight in dusty, dirty old IRAC. It's funny money keeps American kids out of IRAC while in Britian having Blue, incest-ridden blood gets you a free ride. This is why I would never kiss a royal person's butt they are no diffrent from anyone elese.
It's funny I hear Brits ripping on Americans all the time but they should admit that they enjoy being second class to a family with ZERO revelance today.
At least Paris Hilton is doing some jail time, not much but something to make me feel like there is some equality on planet Earth.

May 17, 2007, 12:27 a.m.You can't have celiberties in combat. Every terrorist in the mideast would flood to Iraq for the chance to torture and behead the Prince on camera. It would like sending in troops with gay pride patcheson. You don't need to give then any more incentives to kill you.

May 17, 2007, 9:06 a.m.Conveniently publicized the possibility of Harry going to Iraq so that he won't have to go to Iraq.

May 17, 2007, 9:29 a.m.I'm a Brit myself, and I agree that most of the Royals are a waste of space. Harry, however, is one of the few I have any respect for. He is at least willing to risk his own life for what he believes in, rather than the lives of other people. I may not agree with this war myself, but I am at least willing to respect those whose opinions differ from my own, especially if they are willing to go out there themselves to fight.
It is not Harry's fault that some people, especially in the media, do not know when to keep their mouths shut. From what I have heard of Harry, I would be willing to bet that even after he heard that he would be a target, he was still willing to go. More than likely, it was the danger that his presence would bring to the rest of his squad, or a direct order, that stopped him.
Why is it that so many people on this site are willing to believe the worst about anybody on the smallest amount of evidence?

May 17, 2007, 9:35 a.m.Now why would anyone in their right mind want to go to Iraq and get shot at? If I was a prince and young and handsome, I would just stay home, drink and chase girls. Much more fun and somewhat less dangerous. :)

May 17, 2007, 9:49 a.m.Cheney, McCain and other warmongers have declared Iraq is getting better and safer. So what is the problem in that Prince going to Iraq to defend his country?
The only reason I can think of is, some lives are precious while others are dispensable.

May 17, 2007, 10:01 a.m.Hey he's the damn Prince if he wants to go then he should go. I am sure they could ship him out without anyone knowing and let's face it they could pass a mandate to the media not to expose such information under penalty of treason or endangerment.

May 17, 2007, 10:12 a.m.Come on guys, just THINK. They couldn't send Harry any more than they could send one of Bush's daughters. The world is different now. Tradition has it that male members of the royal family serve. But today's wars are as much about kidnapping, publicity and media manipulation, etc. He would have been a target unto himself, and the complications surrounding his capture or death would have been far greater than any benefit to his serving. This was a good tactical decision. Other things may have influenced it - his dad and grandmother didn't want him in harm's way - but it still, a good decision. If you've listened to any of the BBC broadcasts, the issue now is whether or not this tradition of service can continue.

May 17, 2007, 10:32 a.m.Oh Please, Bush's daughter's life is no more important that anybody's elese. It is pathetic that we live in a world where the rich man can create a war but the poor people fight it. The kidnapping thing is bull because hell you could put him the kitchen peeling potateos where he will be nice, safe and snug. They made this guy a leader in his platoon and now his platoon is fighting without their leader. (LAME)
As far as tradition goes, they need to end it. This action proves that they are not serious about serving in the military and have no desire to do anything more that fox hunting and traveling.
ALL THE PEOPLE BEHIND THIS ARE COWARDS!!!!

May 17, 2007, 11 a.m.I dont see why he should not go and fight. Its like saying that his life is more important than all those who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan already. I think he should be treated more like the soldier he was trained to be and less like royalty... talk about war levelling all posts...

May 17, 2007, 11:11 a.m.I think the prince has guts-I'll give him that. But listen Harry just by going in you would have jeopardized your squad/unit. With this brainless media they would have given your position away sooner or later and you would have been up to your eyes in maniacs with AKs and RPGs. It's admirable you want to prove yourelf but if that be the case we can always do to you what they did to Bruce willis in Die Hard 3...wearing that sign ins south central L.A. we'll see if you really are tough.

May 17, 2007, 12:33 p.m.MOst members of the Royal Family in Britin do spend some time in the military which to me is nearly as important as actually going into combat. It would not hurt anyone to spend some time in the military and learn to take orders from a superior officer. Just think of todays rich kids that will likely never see military training but may someday be the leaders of our nations and send others to fight not knowing the reallity of war or combat situations.

May 17, 2007, 12:59 p.m.Harry is a gutsy guy and I admire his courage. But he also is a............ FORTUNATE SON. And yes, he would have been a sought after target.

May 17, 2007, 3:09 p.m.Of course Harry would be targeted. But, and tradition aside--why go into the military at all? Can we not at last give up the idea that someone is more manly for fighting or learning how to? Why put oneself in harm's way at all, as if doing so conferred some kind of characterological superiority? Especially in the case of the Iraqi war, for which the stakes are so pathetically and tragically unavailing?

May 17, 2007, 4:15 p.m.And not going to Iraq is not his or the Royal families decision;they are figure heads, this is a political decision, besides can you name any other elitists' son or daughter that is in this position? I can't...That the Royal family influenced this I don't know, "stiff upperlip and all that" attitude does creep into British thinking
