Tainted Chinese Imports Common »

Posted by: Beau7890 2 years, 5 months ago

Dried apples preserved with a cancer-causing chemical. Frozen catfish laden with banned antibiotics. Scallops and sardines coated with putrefying bacteria. Mushrooms laced with illegal pesticides. These were among the 107 food imports from China that the FDA detained at U.S. ports just last month. For years, U.S. inspection records show

Thank you Beau, this article details more information than has previously been told by media. This is really scarey.

The real possibility exists, that alot of the American people's illinesses are being caused by tainted imports, that are not caught by our inspectors. How many pets died or became ill before we were told anything?

(not all trailers & contents are inspected!)

The FDA is doing a fine job. I saw a piece last night that showed how they watch CA crops. Growers are handed a list of regulations, and expected to comply. They don't test the crops, and they don't test the water that irrigates the crops. They don't notice cows grazing near crops....cows which carry a deadly form of e-coli. They don't notice that some crops are smack in a territory where wild boar roam, who also carry e-coli, and romp through the lettuce and spinach fields. Our government is filled with incompetence. All they know how to do is react when something bad happens. Foresight is not on their itinerary.

I believe that the free market system is a good one.

        Adam Smith was a Liberal.

Capitalism is actually an important part of this "Great Experiment".

I can not put my finger on it but I truly believe there is a corruption. Somehow the "invisible hands" are not free enough. Some stuff is way too cheap and some stuff is way too expensive.

I blame those that whisper in our Lawmaker's ears, and those that pay the billions to the whisperers.

This is just one of the many consequences of our "free trade" policies along with the outsourcing of U.S. manufacturing to other countries.

A similar article notes that the U.S. doesn't want to crack down too much on China because the U.S. wants to be able to continue to sell stuff to China.

First off, I am not sure what it is that is still being made in America since so much of our manufacturing has been placed offshore.

Second - money talks. It is, again, the almighty dollar that drives what Congress and the big corporations do these days. Who cares who is 'hurt' as long as the corporations and their stockholders continue to make big profits.

This, like many other things going on in this country these days, is an outrage.

I almost think I am going to start growing my own food and not buy ANYTHING from a store anymore ...

During my working career as a quality control person, I have worked with Government inspectors, one job was when I worked on a dairy farm for a while and others in the aerospace industry, quality was always the priority.

The government inspectors have Mil-specs & standards that cover everything. These documents were written last century for the health & safety protection of the public. (Revisions are added to these as improvement or problems are discovered.)

Having spent over 30 years in Quality control inspection, there is no excuses for not testing all incoming products for health & safety purposes!

Perhaps it is time to raise the tarrif on Chinese goods to pay for the cost of inspecting these tainted goods. They apparently have no incentive to stop poisoning us.

This China thing is just the tip of the problem.

                  FDA is useless.

If you buy a product for resale or otherwise you should know what is in it...right?

Go to the store and look in the canned goods or any other food item and look to see where the contents come from, sometimes it will say who it is distributed by but seldom do they say where the ingredients came from and it is even worse with the store brand items...this appears to be the norm.

All goods need to have labeling showing ingredients country of origin at the time of packaging.

Bush says they are our most favored nation to trade with and has visited China more times than all the presidents prior to himself put together starting with Nixon.

I think they're afraid of alienating such a large market for us. And the Chinese play hardball--it took Nixon to even begin to open China to our exports, and quite a bit of work to actually do it. Not that I think we shouldn't impose some standards.

"Our farmers and food processors have drooled for years to be able to sell their food to that massive market," Foreman said. "The Chinese counterfeit. They have a serious piracy problem. But we put up with it because we want to sell to them."

                            well, WTF?
