... and the reporters are all there, and some nearby citizens stand around talking about the fire, watching a familiar sight disappear from view, and their kids ask: "can they fix it, mummy?" and everyone knows that it's already lost... and the firefighters are quoted:

"yup, that ship is 100% on fire."

    hahahahaha...

Our heritage should be preserved. The authorities should diligently investigate this event. Was it an accident or another form of terror aimed at our culture? No one can say at this time, but it is important to know. Either way, let us support the effort to rebuild and repair this historic monument to our past achievements in technology in the era when Britain ruled the waves.

The Cutty Sark was a work of maritime art! what a tragedy that such a magificent vessel should be destroyed. She stood as a suprime example of the stat of the art of the days of sail. Perhaps she should be rebuilt.

This is indeed a tragedy for the entire world. The Cutty Sark is a most beautiful and glorious ship and, with providence, be restored once again. If the fire was of suspicious origin, I hope the perpetrators are caught and sent to the Tower, (yes, I know the Tower isn't used for that any more, but it should).

I would hope there is a worldwide outreach for her restoration. I will inform my countrymen here in the United States.

It would only be a reproduction. There is no way you can 'rebuild' something that is totally destroyed. The Cutty Sark was the ORIGINAL, not a duplicate. I remember visiting the ship many times as a child, and have fond memories of school trips, taking overseas visitors there, and then my children, explaining what a tea clipper was. The Cutty Sark was the fastest tea clipper. Her history was not just as a tea clipper (bringing tea from the Indies to London) she had a varied life, until she returned to her duties in the trades. I hope they are able to save something of her... what a wonderful ship... the last in her era.

Would the Cutty Sark be on fire if the British hadn't been so foolish as to allow half of the residents of the Far East into their country?

Why can't you post some intelligent comments, instead of voicing trival, inconsiderate dribble.... The booze was named after the ship, not the other way around, and I'm sure no-one was to blame, if it was under refurbishing, then it was an accident... stop blaming everyone else (including Bush and Blair) for anything that happens in this world... get a life and read up about the CUtty Sark and what she accomplished.

Is it just me, or is there a high incidence of this sort of incident whenever something is renovated, remodeled, or some sort of construction is going on?

I don't know how many times I've seen a version of this same story...historic building/monument/amusement ride/vessel exists peacefully for decades, used or visited by multitudes, no problem. Someone brings a welder or cutting torch inside "just to do a little work", and within days, the inevitable accident happens and the thing burns to the ground (or, in this case, the water).

You'd think people would recognize that the hazards were much, much higher than for daily service and plan accordingly...but apparently not.

According to the article a good portion of the ship had been removed for restoration and as such is completely undamaged. The article stated that they needed to measure the hull to check if it is buckling (indicating that it's integrity has been compromised) And if not it should be repairable.

Let's hope so, this is an irreplaceable piece of history.

this ship may not be lost beacause of knowlege gained from the royal navy regarding the repair of fire and shock damaged wooden vessels there is a good chance she will be repaired the hms victory was a floating hulk after the battle of trafalger and had to be towed back to england she was repaired and still served for many years after.i would say the cutty sark is not even completly original even through her sevice life masts woul have been replaced even major timbers due to shock damage and rot the ocean is the harshest enviroment on the planet porviding the repairs are not half arsed she could bee as good as new the most important thing is her keel.cross fingers she will be okay.

What a shame. Such a breathtaking, beautiful ship. Ah, if only it could tell us of the history it has seen!

No, not the dry words writen in history books, but of the days and sufferings and joys of men that sailed across the oceans and seas, commanding her sleek beauty.

Yes, I am in love with clipper ships and mourn their loss. I mourn the loss of any beauty in this world.

Seriously, let's hope that the ship can be restored
