Have We Raised A Generation Of Narcissists? »

Posted by: _kam0_ 2 years, 6 months ago

A recent article in The WSJ reported that because they have been told since infancy that they were special, they believe it and expect to keep hearing it. "Bosses, professors and mates are feeling the need to lavish praise on young adults, particularly 20 somethings, or else see them wither under an unfamiliar compliment deficit" it said.

The boomers can't stand the fact that the Gen Y'ers are taking the stage. But what about the Gen X'ers that the boomers have overlooked? I hate to say that I am a Gen X'er and I am tired of sweeping the poop left by the boomers and their grandkids (i.e., Y'ers). I think I'll just go back to sleep.

        Have we?

Yes, we have! We failed to give them decent moral education as we failed in getting it ourselves. I will very kindly remind you the disgusting anthem we have dully duly sang:

        We don't need your education

We don't need your birth control

        Teacher, leave the kids alone...

Can you give me a better example of barbarism and degradation?

Take a look around at the young people today. When I was a teenager we worked to help our parents. Today the youth are GIVEN everything and DEMAND more. An amazingly discouraging trend began in the 90's with fresh out of school graduates demanding to start at the top of the ladder, and blaming society and the government for making them start out at ENTRY LEVEL like the rest of the working world. These are also the result of "everyone gets a trophy". They have no drive, no spirit of competition.

This is a recent example of this trend. I am the sole mechanic for a small company. I needed an assistant and it was decided to hire someone to help me. During the interview process we encountered a young man (22) that looked promising until we got to the issue of pay. When we told him that as a helper he would start at $10.00 an hour, his response was "I don't get out of bed for $10.00 an hour".

Yep they are all "special" they know everything, they sponge off their parents until their parents have no chance of retiring EVER! They want a "fun" job where ther boss worries about their spiritual fufillment. And cry that the world isnt fair when they dont get their way.

Oh yes this is the legacy that the "feel good" parenting has left us. When I was growing up civil rights ended at the doorstep and the "roof rule" superceded any decision redered by the supreme court.

Most of the boomers raised succesful children. Most are in pre-med and exercise. They do not drink or do drugs. I think it has to do with the parents.

I would rather have a generation of narcisits than a generation like my parents. My parents would not send their daughters to college because they thought they would just get married any way.

Ten dollars an hour sounds resonable and I would keep looking for an assistant. This guy sounds lazy and spoiled by his parents.

A lot of these kids are in Iraq dying for the entitled.

There is a serious disconnect between accomplishment and praise (recognition). When praise is given without any significant accomplishment, the praise, like the activity which prompted it, is trivial.

I would not put this on a single generation. Its the environment we are all in now. We are all taught that its all about "me". Get out of my way, I am in a hurry, I am the important one.. but no one will move an inch for someone else. The wants of an individual ARE more important then the needs of many in todays society (which is wrong). Look at government and businesses. Trying to please everyone and not step on toes, to offend anyone because if one person is unhappy then things must change. With all of this everyone tends to get an over inflated ego. The worlds is about me. I hope it changes as I have raised my kids to THINK of others! What a concept. You live in the world... the world is not here for you.
