May 21, 2007, 6:44 p.m.I'm 53 years old, 17 years as broadcast DJ ending in 1992, avid mp3 collector with hundreds of dollars invested in Whitburn research books, and I'm from the South. Ok enough of that. I viewed the list with interest, and a bit of revulsion when I saw 'Sweet Home Alabama' on the list. The Ode to Southern Ignorance is one of the few popular songs which will cause me to switch channels, or just turn the radio off. I usually intercept BEFORE they reach the intro line "Turn It Up". To the younger reader, the Governor they love in Birmingham is George Wallace, and FYI Neil Young was absolutely correct about the Alabama of the time period in question.

May 21, 2007, 8:37 p.m.Elton John's "Your Song"?
What about Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"?
...and in what universe exactly is Aretha Franklin's "Respect" considered a Rock song, while the Doors' "Break On Through" couldn't even break into the top 50, especially when Janet Jackson's "Black Cat" is much, MUCH closer to a traditional rock song than Aretha's?
At least "Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen isn't on the list-- that's a little consolation.
Maybe we should show up en masse and force them to reconsider-- 'cause as Sabbath would say: "The Mob Rules"!

May 21, 2007, 8:42 p.m.I don't agree with most of these songs.. anyway to put
"House of the Rising Sun" (which is about prostitutes)
by the Animals over their
"ANTHEM" IT'S MY LIFE" (AND I'LL DO WHAT I WANT) for
growing teenagers is ludicris.
Bruce Springsteen played "It's My Life" in concert for years
and the Jersey folks called it their Anthem.. it put him on
the map while he was trying to get hits with his own material.
Why isn't this great classic on the list there are so many
people who even sing it today.
Julia Thin, a child of the 60's, 70's, & 80's!

May 22, 2007, 2:59 a.m.Thanks Varadinum!
It varies to oneself, I like the list, but they're are certainly better songs than the one's that's on that article.
One constant about rock though,be it 25,50,100 or more years from now, it'll always remain timeless.

May 22, 2007, 4:43 a.m.Heresy! Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" is decidedly the best song ever written. Stairway to Heaven, and Light My Fire do not even compare.

May 22, 2007, 7:03 a.m.Pretty good list except for I do not think the "police" songs belong on their at all. Also, I like Henddrix but I think "all along the watchtower" does not belong on the list. My favorites on the list are "Revoltion", "Come Together", "Rock and Roll", and "Born to be wild". Black Sabbaths "Paranoid" needs to be on there. I do like the Kinks but I like their song "lola" better.

May 22, 2007, 7:10 a.m.I would say you should only have a most significant song from each group . Too many Stones and Beatles . So , how about Deep Purple and ... Uriah Heep and the King Elvis , who The Who looked to for inspiration .How 'bout Johnny Winters' Rock-n-Roll Hoochie Coo ? Doobie Brothers ? Grand Funk Railroad ? Jefferson Airplane ? ZZ Top ? War? Yes ? Oh and ELP ? Lou Reed ? CCR ? There's more ......

May 22, 2007, 8:05 a.m.I would have liked to have seen more Pink Floyd on there, or at least higher up.

May 22, 2007, 8:36 a.m.Does "Top 50" mean best, or most popular, or most overplayed?
I'm sorry, but for example, "Stairway to Heaven" and "Layla" are all right, but I've heard both enough times to last me several lifetimes.

May 22, 2007, 8:52 a.m.When most of these songs came out thet were played on AM radio, most music buffs listened to FM.Good choices but where is AD/DC or Bowie?

May 22, 2007, 8:54 a.m.Pretty good list. Be prepared to get flamed for some of your choices though. I suppose that's the price you pay for coming out with another top 50 list though.
I'd like to know a little bit more about your selection criteria too...details man... details.

May 22, 2007, 10:41 a.m.Way too many Beatles songs on the list, although i don't hate the Beatles, there are other groups that i would have chosen other than all of those.
Some of the songs on the list definitely needed to be there, others, i can think of many songs that surpass them a great deal. A matter of personal taste though.

May 22, 2007, 10:49 a.m.It was fun reading the list but to one sided. There are just so many greats out there. What about
Nazareth: Love Hurts, Please don't Judas Me etc
Cher: to many to mention
Air Supply: With Out You etc.
Lobo, Duane Eddy, The Beach Boys, Little Richard, Chubby Checkers. I could go on and on. In a top anything list I don't think there should be more than one song by any one group or performer. There are just to many really good songs out there. Of course it does depend on who you talk to as to what is best, or even what is rock or classic. I love all kinds of music and probably could come up with a great top 50 for each decade from the 50s to now. I have a large music collection and it depends on the day and my mood in the moment as to what I think is best. People like Elvis, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis were the begining of the rock music generation. They certainly deserve some recognition for bringin it on.

May 22, 2007, 10:50 a.m.Hmm, no Kansas tunes on the list...Dust in the Wind, Song For America, Carry on Wayward Son, Icarus (insert Roman numeral here)

May 22, 2007, 11:08 a.m.I agree with you on your comment River Rat and walden3...The early 70's was a live wire for GREAT music too...LOTS of GREAT MUSIC...This list is OK, but doesn't even come close to what could be on there !
-

May 22, 2007, 11:11 a.m.See what I mean? People keep coming up with great music. How do you chose what is best. I think we probably all have our own list and it is conected to our memories and experiences at the time. Oh yeah, those were the days.

May 22, 2007, 11:22 a.m.Of course, we're also missing the Allman Brothers, Yes, and the 37 GOOD Doors tunes. (LA Woman trumps Light My Fire every day of the week and twice on Sundays)

May 22, 2007, 12:29 p.m.I knew when I saw this post, they'd be contention. I knew they'd leave out songs I'd say belonged in the top 50. But hey, it's their list not mine. I agreed with many.
