"Phytoplankton, tiny plants that live in the upper layers of the Earth's waters, perform around two-thirds of all the Earth's photosynthesis. Since these types of plant populations are always changing, it is very important for this factor to be accurately understood, and how these changes will effect global warming."

May 22, 2007, 2:19 p.m."Traditional models have not been able to account for the evolving nature of phytoplankton populations and their environmental effects. MIT researchers have now developed an algorithm using evolutionary principles, which will better represent the ever-changing phytoplankton communities. "
"We know that if climate changes a lot, the oceanic ecosystem will change," says Raleigh Hood, a University of Maryland oceanographer. "This model has the power to change itself under changing conditions
