According to Rogers's account -- which Murtha has not disputed -- the Pennsylvanian approached his colleague on the House floor last Thursday and said, in a loud voice: "I hope you don't have any earmarks in the defense appropriation bill, because they are gone and you will not get any earmarks now and forever."

I love pop culture and politics, the former offsets the stress created by the latter.

The saddest part isn't that he did this, it's that he's not ashamed of the fact either.

To nobody's surprise, the House voted to table Rogers's resolution, 219 to 189. Only two Democrats dared to jeopardize their earmarks by voting against Murtha: Jim Cooper of Tennessee and Earl Blumenauer of Oregon. Only one Republican took Murtha's side in the dispute -- Tim Murphy, whose Pennsylvania district is uncomfortably near Murtha's.

"It's unfortunately what I expected," the vanquished Rogers said in the Speaker's Lobby after the vote. "It's no wonder Americans hold us in such low regard."----

And life goes on in the new, "ethical" Congress

What elese is new. They are not going to say anything about Pelosis right hand what ever? They have done about as little as the last congress did, and they cant even control the blowhards in their party.

"The earmark in question was a $23 million gift to the National Drug Intelligence Center, which happens to be in Johnstown, Pa., in Murtha's district."

This "Center" replicates the work done in other agencies in the US govt. It is pure pork!

I grew up in Johnstown PA and still have many family members there.

When you drive through the small towns in the area, you see one building after another named after Murtha.

"hospital in Connellsville, which got $500,000 for post-traumatic stress research" Connellsville is a city in Fayette County, in the Pittsburgh metro area. Estimated population in 2003, was 8,765. The money would have been better spent at one of the large research medical centers in Pittsburgh or at the Uni of Pittsburgh. Another waste of money

Don't expect Pelosi to get control of Murtha. He is very nasty and can really play dirty. You only need to look at what he has done to anyone who dared challenge him in a primary
