Reading through this article, one sees the same patterns repeated over and over again. For example, during WW I: "The Committee on Public Information blanketed the country with tales of atrocities by the "Huns," and encouraged Americans to rename hamburgers as "liberty sandwiches," and sauerkraut as "liberty cabbage."

Ah yes. I think I'll have a tasty "liberty sandwich" with a side of "freedom fries". The more things change, the more they stay the same.

"This is an offense against mankind, and is likewise an offense against God, who created us free, in His image."

      haha, another zealot.

But, his article is correct in that the Patriot act and the security acts that followed are not intended to protect US from 'THE TERRORISTS" but to keep US 'pacified' and happy spenders, with no thoughts of revolution.

Thanks ameliog, this is a good article.

History is repeating itself, with a few modern inventions added. And once again, it is for mankind to make choices.

And, then live with the consequences.

In 1798, the Federal Government passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, in response to the threat of war with France. "The Sedition Act made it a criminal offense to print or publish false, malicious, or scandalous statements directed against the U.S. government, the president, or Congress; to foster opposition to the lawful acts of Congress; or to aid a foreign power in plotting against the United States."

Actually that seems like a partly good law: except for the part about printing or publishing scandalous statements directed against the U.S. government, the president, or Congress; to foster opposition to the lawful acts of Congress...scandalous statements and oppostion to Congress are undoubtedly covered under the first amendment.

However: it should be a criminal offense to print or publish false or malicious statements directed against the U.S. government or that give support or encouragement to an enemy, or to aid a foreign power in plotting against the United States...
