Put your car in neutral and coast downhill? Not only is that dangerous, but where I live, it's against the law! I'm not too sure how many miles I'm going to pick up parking at the top of the parking lot and coasting to start my car... a couple of these are really stretching to make a list worth publishing!

A lot of times the AP distributes a chart or list that is supposed to be attached to a larger story, like this one, but often on online editions the chart and the actual story get separated

This is the AP story that was supposed to accompany this list

Gives a lot more background info

Good points. But use your judgment on shifting into neutral downhill. I've got some steep hills in my neck of the woods. I have to shift into first, but I do take my foot off the accelerator.

I saw what I thought was a large flattened out beer can on the L.A. Freeway system last week. Now I realize that it was just a "Hypermiler" come to grief.

These hypermilers should use these methods. Herre are two that can be combined and be real safe. Draft 1 sec behind the semi and coast to a stop when he has to make a sudden stop. LOL

Most of these driving tips to save mileage are impractical and some are pretty dangerous. Factoring in the safety issues I would settle for the recommended gas mileages than try to milk out a few more miles.

I'd rather pay a little more for gas and keep my body and secondarily the car, in one piece. If you are driving there are the common sense tips which have already been mentioned, been used for years and are safe/legal, like taking your foot off the accelator when you see you have to stop up ahead, accelatering slowly unless entering a merge, using downhills but keeping your car in gear and the motor running, and of course keeping your tires fully inflated and the air filter replaced on time. You do need to keep up with traffic on a busy highway. Driving slower than the prevailing traffic, even in the rightmost lane can be dangerious for other drivers, and you if there should be an accident nearby caused by an impatient driver. I've cruised at up to 85 (when safe) on highway trips with the windows closed, a/c running in my Camry 4 cyl and gotten average mileage for the trip of over 36 mpg.
