The origin of 'enhanced interrogation techniques.' »

Posted by: TechnologyExpert 2 years, 6 months ago

The phrase 'Verscharfte Vernehmung' is German for 'enhanced interrogation'. It's a phrase that appears to have been concocted in 1937, to describe a form of torture that would leave no marks. The methods, as you can see above, are indistinguishable from those described as 'enhanced interrogation techniques' by the president.

As you can see from the Gestapo memo, moreover, the Nazis were adamant that their "enhanced interrogation techniques" would be carefully restricted and controlled, monitored by an elite professional staff, of the kind recommended by Charles Krauthammer, and strictly reserved for certain categories of prisoner. At least, that was the original plan.

Also: the use of hypothermia, authorized by Bush and Rumsfeld, was initially forbidden. 'Waterboarding" was forbidden too, unlike that authorized by Bush.

Enhanced interrogation, my patootie. It's torture. We're just using euphemisms here. This must stop! Bush should be impeached for this alone. How low has this administration brought us.

Off topic, but relevant, you've probably seen the clip from the Miss Universe pageant where Miss USA fell. MSM media is not emphacizing that Miss USA was the only contestant that got booed. That's where this administration has brought us.

China may have most favored nation status. We enjoy the most hated nation status. And that is partly due to the human rights abuses which, thanks to this administration, are being laid at our feet.

If we do not impeach this administration, the rest of the world will continue to view the populace of this once great nation as either stupid, powerless or spineless.

I'm so angry I could spit!

I am angry, too, Amazing1. I don't know how to express it anymore, but I am very angry and frustrated that the Bush administration gets away with breaking the law, violating the Constitution, and stripping away the rights of American citizens.

The moves by the Bush admin are SO parallel to the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party in Germany, and also to the rise and then to the corruption of ancient Rome.

It is beyond amazing (!) that so many people do not SEE and UNDERSTAND this!

Torture (or whatever name they care to bestow upon it) is not effective interrogation. The tortured person will eventually say anything the torturer wants them to say (assuming they still had a tongue of course.) "Intelligence" gleaned from torture is dubious at best. This goes against every ideal the U.S. has stood for, everything good about the nation. It is implausible to me to even be having a conversation where a U.S. citizen would even entertain such a notion.

"Fascism will come to America, but likely under another name, perhaps anti-fascism."

Excellent eye-opening article. That's why I feel so strongly that it is a mistake to simply wait out this administration's end. If we do not call the Bush Administration to account for their crimes, then by precedent, all they have done and more become the norm. They MUST be impeached.

Wasn't McCain tortured when he was shot down over N. Vietnam in the 70s? If so, then he should be out there in Iowa screaming against the use of torture by the USA in the war on terror.

Otherwise, the N. Vietnamese didn't beat him up enough.
