May 30, 2007, 8:58 a.m.I think James Madison best summed up the effects of war:
"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few."
"In war, too, the discretionary power of the Executive is extended; its influence in dealing out offices, honors, and emoluments is multiplied; and all the means of seducing the minds, are added to those of subduing the force, of the people.... [There is also an] inequality of fortunes, and the opportunities of fraud, growing out of a state of war, and ... degeneracy of manners and of morals.... No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."
sounds familiar, huh?

Thanks for the story. This war has nothing to do with terrorism nor democracy -- especially because under the guise of 'terrorism,' we are losing our democracy to the dictator in the White House and his henchmen. The only thing to do is to fight back and hopefully we will have a brand new direction in 2009 -- hopefully sooner.

May 30, 2007, 9:29 a.m.With everyday that passes it should be more clear to why we went into Iraq...It had nothing to do with WMD ....
Iraq is Oil Rich and our Leaders went to take control.
The purpose of our military is to protect Halliburton so they can rape the Iraqi people out of THEIR Oil...
We may have freed them from Saddam, but look at the cost of human lives on both sides...
My question of the day???? What is George Bush's Religion?
All that wealth will not save his soul from HELL....

May 30, 2007, 10:26 a.m.And for the OIL COMPANIES we have now been reduced to the type of country that TORTURES people. We have habeas corpus ripped from us, we have lost thousands of young men and women, we have accrued more debt than we will ever be able to pay in this generation and we can now be spyed on by our government for no reason and without a warrant.
I say pull all our troops out NOW. If the oil companies want the oil, let them hire their own dang mercenaries. Oh sure, they have mercenaries now, but let them take over the entire occupation.
We have things to do here, like impeach the jackass currently occupying the white house. And the evil regent, Shotgun Dickie. This is just so outrageous I can hardly see straight.

May 30, 2007, 11:22 a.m.The hidden Agenda finally comes out and the plot thickens. I have no idea where or what We the People are going do about this in the future. I do so hope that the greedy lot that profit from the misfortunes they have brought on the innocent, suffer very soon. When I say innocent, I mean here and there.

May 30, 2007, 11:41 a.m.While this oil deal would explain a lot I would like to see some other sources that this oil deal is as put forth by Dennis Kucinich. Does anyone have any links where I can find out more?

May 30, 2007, 11:41 a.m.i didn't believe the article as it didn't list a whole lot of substance so i did some quick research on my own that also confirmed the substance of the story. wild. it is indeed all about the oil. of course companies should get some return for the investing of capital.
some portion generated from iraqi oil fields should be returned to the treasury of the united states.
our military is being used as 21st century pinkertons for these octupus like multi-nationals well the people at home get screwed.

May 30, 2007, 12:02 p.m.This I have stated before.Iraq is only the start. As much oil as Iraq has in an area just north of them, about the size of Alaska there is 3-4 times the amount of oil.Iraq is needed as it offers the shortest supply route to market.Bagdad to Nigeria is about New York to San Fran and in this area of Sudan, Chad, Niger, Eygpt, Lybia, Angola, Nigeria and others is even more oil but here is where shrub and co. miscalculated. In the last 5 years while US politics has been involved in Iraq, China with its 1.3 trill $US has been buying up Africa. They bought out Chevron in Sudan in the 90's and are investing heavily so now 30% of Chinese oil is from Africa and growing......Iraq has always been about oil, and there is the whole problem.Oil=money=power and as such gov are bought and paid for

May 30, 2007, 11:59 a.m.I am glad someone in Congress is talking about it. Better late than never. At the same time our country is crumbling around us.
McClatchy News - "The McClatchy analysis found that the number of severely poor Americans grew by 26 percent from 2000 to 2005. That's 56 percent faster than the overall poverty population grew in the same period. These and other factors have helped push 43 percent of the nation's 37 million poor people into deep poverty - the highest rate since at least 1975."

May 30, 2007, 12:16 p.m.after just doing a little research and ruminating on the issue for a few minutes it occurs to me that once again the bush administration is totally blind to the power of perception. perception is everything.
once the world perceives, rightly or wrongly, that american oil companies are pillaging a sovereign's natural resources we're going to be perceived as thieves. this will not reduce the threat of terrorism or the pounding of insurgent drums. when millions of people around the world have confirmed what they were thinking all along anyways we will be less safe.

May 30, 2007, 12:41 p.m.It would be interesting to see how many people bitching and moaning on here have or have family members with pension plans that get money from the success of Exxon/Mobile, BP to name a few. I bet it would be quite a few.

May 30, 2007, 12:45 p.m.I remember the suggestion before the war started that the U.S. should get repayment from Iraq through oil revenues (for our expenses to depose Sadaam). I don't know by what mechanism it was supposed to be done. That sounded fair and good to me at the time. I was wondering what ever happened to that. I had not heard about Sadaam agreeing to step down before the war (or after). That seems unlikely, given his defiant attitude at the time. Even if he said that I doubt his word could have been trusted. If Iraq had no oil it probably wouldn't have been worth going in there, just as it's not worth it to go into Syria, unless they become too supportive of terrorism or too interested in developing WMD's.

May 30, 2007, 12:54 p.m.doing good is not good (enough) reason to go to war, on the face of it. the claims of american exceptionalism are no longer valid.

May 30, 2007, 1:14 p.m.The most thoughtful information for a student about real-life combat situations comes from what should be one of our most trusted resources on the subject: our vets, who have actually served this country under those circumstances.
And trust me, this information will not come from a bright-eyed military recruiter, desperate to fill their "quota".
If a student you care about is being approached by any military recruiters, make sure they hear the other side of the equasion from a vet who has actually experienced combat.

May 30, 2007, 1:15 p.m.The whole picture has been muddled until most of you can't see the simple truth. 1.) Sadaam went into Kuwait, took it over, killed, raped, looted. A place he had no business taking over and a tiny country with huge amounts of oil. Lots of American oil interests in Kuwait. You bet its about oil and also freedom. Freedom to have your borders without a bigger wolf taking you over.
2.) The U.S. and allies go in and drive him out. Iraq is now the loser and like all losers do what the victor says. Just like Germany and Japan in WWII.
3.) Sadaam thumbs his nose at the UN directives and the U.S. Firing missiles at our aircraft patrolling the no fly zones. Impeding UN inspectors. Continuing military buildup.
4.) Finally we go in and boot him out. Yes, there's oil there and was a possibility of WMD's, terror camps, and who knows what else.
5.) The terrorists from all over move in and make Iraq their front in their war to destroy the infidels and the U.S.

May 30, 2007, 1:26 p.m.I guess the real question is whether our system of government is enough to prevent rampant corruption and cronyism. Do we need something better? Maybe the system of president/vice president and an appointed cabinet is no longer enough to prevent the incredible pocket stuffing potential of the white house. Perhaps the time has come to create a council of governors at the white house wherein the non winning party will still have direct access and some powers to oversee and prevent corruption. it may be time after this administration to take a serious look at such a system. what is going on now appears to be waaayy out of control and not what the people want.

May 30, 2007, 1:29 p.m.Why are there so many in Iraq willing to die to bring us harm? Could it be our foreign policies that exploit their resources and establish military bases in 120 countries? Perhaps they see us as a bully trying to police the world, forcing our government, religion and way of life on them

May 30, 2007, 1:51 p.m.Information about our governments activities would never be popular. Our leaders are not working under the accountability way we are raised to trust and believe. Our government, as with any, is in self-preservation mode. They do what they believe necessary to rule. Those in-power want to control and stay in-power. When you have good rulers there is good. When evil, well, evil. Many who buy totally into the scenario can be blinded somewhat easily.Us vs.them way to compel to a line of thought.Usurps independent thinking. Please, when you name call or go into an attack you show yourself to be of little information or honor. Like a barking dog,you have a point.A barking dog is only good when they bark for true dangers and against true adversaries. If they bark at you with no offense, they are ignored like car alarms. Many are compelled to support our government though it may be harsh and evil.God sets up one and takes down another at His will. Respect, it's not just for you, but others too.

May 30, 2007, 1:57 p.m.Somethings never change like the reasons for war.
People go to war to defend themselves from having their lives or property compromised.
Likewise the agressors go to war to take property and compromise the lives of those who resist.
There is really no other reason..
The rest is just hogwash and propaganda.
Winner gets the spoils.
Weather it is land, resources or labor.
The fact that Gas is over $3.00 a gallon indicates we didnt win the war or get the spoils.
