Posted by: Karina 2 years, 5 months agoA group of 9/11 responders has contracted blood cancers at an unusually young age, and top doctors suspect the disease was triggered by an unprecedented "synergistic mix" of toxins at the World Trade Center site.

May 31, 2007, 10:11 a.m.This is really sad. This comes just after a woman was named the newest victim of the attacks after passing away due to effects of the toxic dust.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2007/05/24/2007...
And unfortunately, we are likely to see more cases like this. If only the White House didn't pressure the EPA to issue false assurances on air quality.

May 31, 2007, 10:33 a.m.Funny thing is a few stories back there is a article by a lobbiest hack named Steve Malloy who claims the WTC would have taken longer to collapse if more asbestos had been used.

May 31, 2007, 10:37 a.m.let's make sure that these first responders are taken care of and have the medical treatments paid for. if there';s money for bombs to break stuff, there's money for doctors to treat stuff. this is one thing i don't mind my tax dollars going to.

May 31, 2007, 10:41 a.m.Somethings that kind of puzzles me here: WHAT, exactly, was IN that freaking building that was TOXIC? Offices full of paper and office equipment? Not so much, I wouldn't think. A janitors closet with some cleaning supplies and solvents stored there? OK, maybe, but in sufficient quantity to survive the catastrophe and cause all these problems? Again -- not so much. Anybody know what was in there that might have caused all this toxicity?

May 31, 2007, 11:13 a.m.What a sad, sad thing to happen to those hero's.
I have never been a conspiracy theorist, but if our govt did have anything to do with this, i wish the same for them and theirs.

May 31, 2007, 11:58 a.m.If the dust was strangely toxic, it would conform to those who believe that the entire fiasco was planned and perpetrated by persons who wanted the US to go to war. AV gas fumes, paper, carpeting, drywall, etc. would not have created a highly toxic cloud that lasted for days. But plastic explosives surreptitiously placed in stairwells, false ceilings, etc. would. (Just how DID that 3rd building fall without being touched by an airplane?) Look at the footage of the towers falling and you will clearly see that the towers falling looks like building demolition. Civil engineers have already stated that the buildings were designed to take the impact of a large commercial jet and not fall down. So a few more point for the conspiracy theory. These cancers should be compared to known stats on toxins to see if explosives were present (besides AV fuel), that's all.

May 31, 2007, 1:06 p.m.it could be the mercury in all the flourescent lights? Plus i cant imagine cement dust is good for you.
I know a (now retired) police office from Upstate NY who was a first responder there. He has a permanent cough. Coughs at least 10-20 times an hour.
i would imagine, sadly, that articles like this are not something he likes to see.
please tell us again (insert neo-con netscape commenter here) how its ok that the EPA lied and said it was ok? Maybe at the least they should have said 'we dont know'? Anyone who thinks the govt is not responsible is on the top of the Ignorant list. Sad.

May 31, 2007, 2:13 p.m.When I first heard that comment being made, I looked at the TV, shaking my head.
I understand why it was said, everyone was there and they had to say something positive. If they said hey you are breathing in dust. You are going to get sick. No One and I mean no one would have been there to look for the missing.
A response was made so they could keep searching. That is the story you are not going to see. Any person who thought that putting on a filter mask was going to protect them was out of their mind. Someone asked what was in the building, to cause all this.
Do you know what ceiling tiles are made out of? And remember some of those tiles had been there for a while. And lets talk about the Thousands of flourescent lamps in the building not including the Xenon, Mercury(security lamps) and L.E.D. lamps. Now how many of those offices had carpet in them? This is just a few things that was mixed in with wallboard and concrete. Add that all and you have problems. Period.

May 31, 2007, 2:26 p.m.Saint wrote: 'Building "temporary housing outside of New York" and making people go there, leaving their homes and jobs behind, isn't exactly "giving power to the people". Why not let them decide for themselves what they want to do, you know, with their OWN LIVES?'
The problem Saint is that the people were not given a choice. JUst because you happen to be somewhat intelligent, does not mean that everyone thinks at your level. If you are ignorant, how can you make a decision on something that doe not even occur to you? Now, give the people a choice, as far as staying put or living in a temporary housing sanctuary, and inform them of the dangers if they choose NOT to take that route, and THEN you have given the people the "choice". How the hell is some young, single-mother living in the inner city and working McDOnald's going to be able to just pick up and leave? Ding dong.

May 31, 2007, 3:59 p.m.I blame both sides. There was alot of stuff that got demolished that day. (Computers, fiberglass, paints,...etc)You can bet that with the mixture of all the stuff together was not good.

May 31, 2007, 4:39 p.m.Some of you obviously have never been to NYC prior to 9/11 nor after. I spent a lot of time in the city itself both before and after. The air quality was never really great there but no where near as bad as LA. The quality after 9/11 was indescribable. Yet, people tried to go on as if nothing was wrong simply in a pursuit of 'normalcy' after an event that confounded our sensibilities.
The first responders who worked 'the pile' were breathing in not pulverized building, but pulverized EVERYTHING. Plastics, fibers, paints, glass, chemicals, cleaning supplies, humans, and thousands of computers. The chemicals in an LCD are so toxic that if a screens breaks the chemicals should not even be touched much less breathed in as they 'cooked' in that toxic stew that was brewed.
IF our first responders didn't start immediately as they did, we might still be looking at 'the pile'. It was their urgency to rescue possible survivors that drove them on for the first 10 days. After that

May 31, 2007, 4:45 p.m.....even though they realized that the possibility of finding anyone alive was non-existant they had the momentum to continue working. Plus a whole lot of patriotism helped.
As to 'knowing' about how to handle the mess...most of firefighting and search and rescue through the ages was developed as 'trial and error'. It is unfortunate that so many of our search and rescue teams and our high-ranking fire chiefs across the U.S. are now disabled due to work after 9/11. It takes time and talent to get good teams and eventually we may have another 9/11-type situation.
I cried for weeks because I could not go to NYC to help, now I cry for those who are sick or who have already died because they did go to help. God bless them.

May 31, 2007, 5:28 p.m.This is very sad but the blame goes on the terrorists!!!
It was obviously not safe to breathe the air from the moment the 1st plane hit. The smoke was black and the smell was horrid!!!There was a job to be done and many many brave men and women did it. Compensate them for the medical bills and stop blaming. Learn form it.
We have sympathy for any loss of life and for suffering at the hands of others but the bitterness expressed on these posts seem to get worse and worse.
I hate war, death, sickness and injustice just as much as everyone else and life Sucks for a lot of people but life is great for a lot of people too.
I love sharing my opinion. As a stay at home mom it is a great outlet but I don't on a lot of topics because people tend to get nasty and it is just not worth it!
I can dish it out and I can certainly take it but when every topic turns to blaming Bush or the govt. It gets dull and sad.

May 31, 2007, 7:48 p.m.Several blogging here seem aware that there was a court case on this very topic. I think Walden3's comments above refer to that case.
If memory serves me, I think the judgment was that EPA chief Christy Todd-Whitman lied knowingly about air safety, to the detriment of 9-11 first responders and cleanup workers. As I remember, there is clear evidence that that she was told to do so by -- guess who. She followed policy, in other words, formulated at the top administration level.
To my mind that does not exonerate someone for misleading people in ways that caused both injury and death to many people. But it may alter the case against her, a little, in some people's minds.
An appelate court overturned that ruling -- but not because of faulty reasoning or law. The appelate court (consisting in a single judge, I believe; an appointee of course) decided that restoring normalcy overrid concerns for anyone's health, safety, or life.
I wonder: why even have an EPA, if not for our safety?

May 31, 2007, 8:41 p.m.Anyone who has done research can tell you that there was asbestos in the WTC.

It's common knowledge so once again a know it all, didn't.
Where did anyone think it went to? Into the ground?

June 1, 2007, 9:09 a.m.Federal Judge Slams Whitman & EPA
Concluding that Whitman's deliberate and misleading statements rose to the level of shocking the conscience, Judge Batts' opinion leaves open the possibility that Whitman herself could be held personally liable for damages.
9/11 Environmental Action's Kimberly Flynn added a reminder about 130 Liberty St, formerly the Deutsche Bank building which, like many other highly contaminated buildings downtown, is slated for deconstruction. These demolitions threaten to become 9/11, the Sequel, exposing NY to the contaminants of 9/11 all over again.
http://www.counterpunch.org/orkin02062006.html
Whitman has always been weak in my opinion. Any person of conscience & integrity would have stepped forward, told the truth & resigned in protest.
I am finding it somewhat amusing to see some people on here agreeing with an article by Fox News! LOL no "Faux News" this time??? Don't look now but your political ideology is showing

June 1, 2007, 9:48 a.m.So that is the real reason they did not rebuild. They wanted to see what kind of toxins were around.
No one asked people to dig around in the dirt for 3 years. The gov. should not have allowed. Maybe just an excuse to collect more money for lawsuits. Where was Rudy foolienotknow?
