Poisoning the Troops, Again »

Posted by: populist 2 years, 7 months ago

The Pentagon has a disturbing pattern of withholding information on the impact of chemical/biological weapons and other toxins on US service members. As a result, veterans are often told that their debilitating symptoms are "in their head" and can go decades without receiving medical help. That's not supporting our troops.

      And the article didn't mention the depleted uranium, which is also causing problems and will continue to cause problems long after we are gone from there.

      The depths to which the government will go to cover itself and thereby deny treatment to the very people who believe in them enough to put their lives on the line, well, it's just disgusting, shameful and obscene.

      It is not just THIS president, although I sincerely believe he's the worst of the bunch, it is also the Congress, the officials at the DoD. And the no-bid contractors who seem to have their wallets open and their hearts closed.

      It is past time for a constitutional convention. With NO POLITICIANS ALLOWED!

        Nothing amazes me anymore. But, being that I'm not a Lawyer,why does DoD have to admit their guilt in order for cases like these to move forward?? Don't they have to proove their innocence rather than guilt? If I read it correctly,anyway, can someone or a group bring a civil case using the data that is available? I really know nothing about law and Military, and my questions may seem a bit stupid.

        Regarding the testing, I guess we've not learned a single thing, since the abuse at Tuskegee.Wasn't there a law made that people could not be tested or subjected to chems without their consent? and that full disclosure of any study using human beings had to be made? So why can't someone begin with that premise?I really am not knowledgable in this area but I feel a grave diservice has been done to so many and for too long.

        As for the first comment,by pawfoot, hey anyone ever tell you that the WMD story was a packaged scam made up by WHIG in order to sell an otherwise illegal invasion?

          Well ... the Bush apologists still refuse to acknowledge the travesties this administration has committed.

          This story is just ONE of MANY ways that the administration does NOT "support the troops".

          Bush and his admin and the Republicans are all SO hypocritical - they spout that phrase all the time yet they don't even do it themselves.

            There is still some justice in the world! Cruel ironic justice, but anyway.

            US soldiers accept money to go and kill people of other countries to help American corporations exploit foreign resources. And then they get killed by their own army. Evil Greed Empire exploits it's own minions.

              I was at Kamysia or however it's spelled. For a week while the munitions were being destroyed with explosives the air was filled with an oily substance that covered everyone and everything. It wasn't a heavy concentration, just enough for some of us to recognize as not being something good. We were told it was residue from the oil fires set by Iraqi forces in Kuwait. Kuwait which was downwind from us. Yeah, oil fires, right. I have had neurological problems ever since. I finally got some help after 10 yeasrs of complaints.I take 3 different psychotropic drugs which, I must admit, have helped. But the VA refuses to relate my problems to my service in Desert Storm which included exposure to sarin at Kamysia as well as exposure twice during the build up on the border with Kuwait and the Neutral area as well as exposure to exploded depleted uranium tipped munitions. The governments lack of action to all this is just as I expected.

                A quiz for everyone here:

                Name the worst WMD ever!

                1. Something or someone in Iraq responsible for 1 million deaths and Lifelong injuries;

                2. Something or someone in Afghanistan responsible for 1 million deaths and lifelong injuries;

                3. Something or someone in Washington, DC responsible for 1 million deaths and lifetime injuries.

                I think you know the answer, but I will make just one guess: it is neither 1 nor 2!

                Peace and Blessings!

                  This is certainly one of the saddest and cruelest parts about war. We send out beloved young people into battle, and the weapons we feel we "must use" to get revenge, eliminate a dictator, whatever, ends up poisoning the very people we want most to protect. There is little or no reason for war today and we have to start actively teaching peace and love throughout the world. For a great book of peace and love, go to amazon dot com or LuLu dot com, or for a signed first edition search ebay for "Korana of Mother Goddess." We have to start protecting the soldiers by eliminating war or reducing it to "immediate protection of innocents only," such as peace keeping troops. I believe we can eliminate war, poverty and provide basic food and medical care to the world, if we can only get our act together on actively preaching and practicing peace and love. Peace to you all today.

                    This is so effin criminal! Yet the President etc, are so quick to say how they are supporting the troops. Right... as long as it suits their agenda then they toss them to the wind. There is something so terribly wrong with this picture. These are people, not objects to be used and abused. I 'm so sick of the inhumane treatment that has become a hallmark of the U.S. We shout we are the best? Best at what? Where is the rage and we certainly must find ways to change the ever increasing abuse.I mean, there has to be a way to change the laws that protect those that do all of the injustices. Leaving those that have been abused to find their own way through the murky BS that have been so conviently set up to protect the heartless Bast$#@ds.

                      I am so glad you braught this up populist. Not many people in the armed forces will even discuss this because they do not want to scare people away from them. In the mean time, God knows what is happening to them. I only hope this brings more people foward so we can finally bring justice to so many people that have been wronged because of politics and let this bring a stop to withholding evidence to a crime they commited.

                              What amazes me is the fact that in this story basically falls in Bill Clinton's watch , and there has be the walter read hospital that was in G W Bush's watch. I guess my question is simple and as i see it to the point when are any of those politicians going to really care about the troops? this is both Dems and Reps they are both failing the troops, When will the people forget there affiliations and stand up for the troops i see the biggest factors every day in the news about the 2008 race, it is not about policy or rights versus wrongs , but the biggest factor being reported is the size of the war chests and how much money a person can raise to win. Bottom lines as i see it is simply what sector is going to be able to profit from winning the election , nothing what so ever to do with the people they are suppose to be representing!! Just another sector that should fall under the finance sections of the paper.

                                Some things do amaze me. We expect so much of our troops, and we are not willing to live up to our commitments.

                                One of the hard things is having to trade off possible long term injury with short term protection.

                                The whole agent orange thing, which was used to protect troops, and _did_ in the context of the war, came back to bite them later. Zumwalt, who ordered it, watched his son die from it later. But he said that it was the right decision, and his son might not have lived to die from it, if he had not used it. Sucked to be them.

                                The anthrax vacines, if Saddam had anthrax and used it, might have been a saviour - but he didn't use it (and probably did not have it). I hope it does not hurt those it was meant to protect.

                                DU munitions are the best possible kenetic weapons you can have, and in some cases, the 25mm chain guns defeated Iraqi MBTs. But the breathing of uranium oxide dust has not been studied, and it sounds like the DOD is going to put that off until later.

                                  These deaths and illnesses of the soldiers is NOTHING compared to the deaths and illnesses of the civil population in the countries where the wars are fought.

                                  If you have a compassionate heart and knowledge, how can you "support the troops"? You should unsupport the troops and demilitarize USA, the nation that has waged wars and supported conflicts far more than any other nation after WWII. Treat your soldiers, but do not support the troops, if you are a human!

                                  USA needs changes into it's constitution to make it harder to fight wars and support conflicts. US secret services should be monitored better and their wrong doings should be taken into courts!

                                              Jordan11's statement "there were no WMDs in Iraq that in any way threatened the US" is disingenuous. Saddam's WMDs were a threat to US strategic allies in the area, Arabia and Israel, who were in SCUD range of Iraq. The US defense treaties stipulate that attacks against allies are attacks against the US. Saddam had WMDs because of his uses against his own people and were hotly discussed as loopholes in crimes against humanity. It was the reason for the no fly zones. The US sells him pesticide and helicopters to use on his swamps and sprays people. Saddam's willignness to attack on his own people, neighbors and use of WMDs caused the US to attack instead of wait for Saddam to rearm. Also the persepective was quoted by Sandy Berger before Clinton attacked Iraq that genocide, like Serbia, is a consideration for regime change. WMDs were the focus of UN SCR 687. WMDs required to be documented as destroyed went missing creating the IAEA fiasco.

                                                Most soldiers are aware of the danger of DU. If I shot an enemy vehicle using DU rounds and I'm told to go do an up close damage assesment, I'll tell you to go screw yourself. It's the dust from the DU thats dangerous. Yes it puts off a bit of radiation, not more than what you get riding an airplane or standing in front of your microwave oven. We don't use it every day. But, we accept the health risk if it means we win and not die today. I will gladly use it if it means I can kill that BMP and crew, versus regular rounds being ineffective. As far as anthrax and some other vaccination, thats where you should focus your attention
