June 2, 2007, 10:41 a.m."There are massive assaults on police officers at the city's harbor right now," said Cordula Feichtinger, a police spokeswoman. "The situation is currently very chaotic and we have to get it under control before I can tell you how many people have been arrested." She said one officer was slightly injured.

June 2, 2007, 2:14 p.m.People are angry when they see the rich getting richer and the poor are no better off than before. Many of these conferences are nothing more than photo ops and a chance for world leaders to meet and greet. They have the opportunity to make high sounding pronouncements which seldom actually change things on the ground. Meanwhile, food prices have risen 6.2% just in April. Although pelting the police is stupid and futile, it is also a symptom of how frustrated people are with their governments. I do not endorse this violence, but I certainly understand it.

June 2, 2007, 2:20 p.m.so much for PEACEFUL protests if Protesters get violent the police should be allowed to do what they need to to get control back. If you want to protest then protest but there is ABSOLUTLY no reason to be violent whie doing so

June 2, 2007, 2:22 p.m.protesters have more rights then those who serve in the military or the police force. i see where the left gets the idea that its okay to tie the hands of both they watch the rest of the world and practice it here

June 2, 2007, 2:27 p.m.The G8 summit, a time when the eight richest countries meet to discuss economic and trade issues, to devise plans on how they can exploit cheap resources from the global South, causing destruction of local livelihoods in developing countries due to waste, pollution, degradation of ecosystems and climate change.
Perhaps, there wouldn't be any violence if the summit focused on fair trade and environmental protection. I find there is a close connection between social justices and environmental sustainability.

June 2, 2007, 3:19 p.m.i'm so tired of hearing this "democrats" "republicans" crap, don't you guys get it yet? There really aren't 2 opposing parties. Maybe on some issues to make you think they are. But if you really think either side is really fighting the other you guys are crazy, its a smoke screen.

June 2, 2007, 3:46 p.m.I agree with protesting if you believe in the cause you are are standing up for , but as a protest organizer it is also your responsibility to make sure those joining your protest are of the same peaceful nature that you are organizing . Then and only then when you have achieved that and had your peaceful protest can you say it was successful. But in doing so maybe you can understand also why there are conflicts in the world in which you are protesting and maybe bring a little closer to the understanding that not all organizers and people that lead are the total fault the the actions that have taken place. To often you will find far to many involved that have no intentions of being there for the cause no matter if the cause is peaceful or not.

June 2, 2007, 4:39 p.m.it seems that some of you have forgotten what happened. one of you said basically that our goverment is heartless and brain dead for sending our troops over to a country to start a war with a country that wasn't threatening us. well i've got a news flash for you. it is a war on terrorism.....not on iraq. Iraq is just the unfortunate place that the bastards hide out in. secondly....our troops went over because Al Quada attaked the U.S in 2001...which it seems some of you have forgotten. i guess u just want us to leave Iraq. And then guess what will happen...all those stories about suicide bombers and car bombs going off in the marketplaces....wuld be over here in our marketplaces.

June 2, 2007, 5:24 p.m.Protesters need to get smart and start wearing riot gear or atleast helmets.
Anyone remember "Little Beruit" ?

June 2, 2007, 6:17 p.m.These people appear to require an additional deterrent in order to remain nonviolent. I recommend a lethal one. Anyone who becomes violent, gets shot. Brutal? Yes. Effective? Yes. My style exactly. Normally, LTL methods of riot control are fine and good. However, when rioters are 'smashing everything in their path', something's not right. Break out the hollowpoints, the slugs, and the buckshot. Now that's riot control right there.

June 2, 2007, 9 p.m.Something to always remember. When protesters put on masks or cover their faces they only have one thing in mind. Civil disobedience or rioting. When they do this it is not their intent to voice an option or pursue their point of view. It's only for discord. What ever their point is should be discarded as not a viable point of view.

June 2, 2007, 9:04 p.m.Hooohooohoo, haahaahaa. I love illiteracy. "masked demonstrators hurled stones and flagpoles at police". I'm laughing my ass off. FLAGSTONES are used to pave streets. The protesters pried them up, broke them into pieces, drew little flags on them, and threw them at the police. They deserved the tear gas.

June 3, 2007, 1:08 a.m.Candida, as usual my meaning is being twisted by someone who disagrees with what i posted. Okay ill try again and make it simple for those of you who didnt understand the first post.
Wether or not a Policeman started or was defending, if he strikes a Protester with anything that can be constrewed as deadly force, the policeman gets hungout to dry, But if a protester attacks or harms a Policeman all they have to do is say the Policeman started it or that they have the right to protest. that is why i say Protesters have more rights then the police, and in case that was to tough for you to understand, try this 1 the protesters can harm, but police can not how is that fair ??????

June 3, 2007, 2:44 a.m.I think our corporate masters count on these sorts of things. Whenever violent protest occurs, all they have to say is "Look they're a bunch of psychopaths. Nothing they stand for or say is right. Therefore, everything we say is right."

June 3, 2007, 3:58 a.m.Toronto114 There are many ways to terrorize people. You don't have to blow them up. you don't have to do bodily harm. Even a vote can terrorize. The threat of some one's survival being affected can be considered as terrorism. If speaking up by means of protest is against your liking then you must feel very threaten. Too bad it went violent. When a mass of people protest, that means the very thing they are protesting, is causing oppression which can lead to terrorism as a last result. A chain reaction. An oppressor can be a terrorist also. Mankind terrorizes Mankind. It is the history of mankind. What kind of terrorist are you?
