Posted by: STONERS 2 years, 6 months agoAny increase in nuclear or renewable energy sources won't likely provide financial relief for consumers at the gas pump, according to state Rep. Phil Montgomery, R-Ashwaubenon.

STONERS
June 3, 2007, 12:37 p.m."The generation of electricity is different and would not affect the price of gas," said Montgomery, a proponent of nuclear power. "There is no correlation whatsoever between gas prices and nuclear energy production."

June 3, 2007, 2:06 p.m.I would agree on the short term, but thinking long term is what's needed to resolve the world energy crisis.
For instance, between now and 2050 the worldwide increase in energy demand is so great that to meet it with nuclear power, one new nuclear plant would have to go up somewhere in the world every single day for the next 43 years!
But nuclear energy generating electricity takes the demand off polluting fossil fuels. It also means that electric cars might become practical, and that electrolysis might economically supply sufficient hydrogen for fuel cell powered vehicles.
Brazil will achieve energy independence this year. But this is the result of planning and investments begun in the 1970s, not some politician's promised quick fix that Americans seem to always fall for.

June 4, 2007, 4:10 a.m.I don't get it. Nuclear power and rising gas prices have nothing to do with each other. I could be wrong, but gas typically is used to power combustion engines and not burned to generate power. And sure, America can drill and refine its own oil. It has been doing so for a long time now. The thing is, domestic oil production has already peaked and has been slowly declining over the years, which is why so much oil is imported. Let's see what happens when oil production peaks globally.

June 4, 2007, 4:49 a.m.Using nuclear power instead of oil to generate electricity will have an effect on oil demand, and thus the pricing of oil and gasoline - assuming the corporate oil oligarchy and OPEC ever allow market forces to rule. Did this WI legislator ever take Econ 101? Of course, any benefit would be years away, considering the lead time for a nuclear plant, and the effect would be on gas price increases forestalled rather than actual reductions.

June 4, 2007, 5:58 a.m.Nuclear power was suspose to bring the cost of energy. It went the oppsite. Old Rusty is right about Americans being in a trap.

June 4, 2007, 10:10 a.m.Not only that but in 1926, electrolysis of water to form hydrogen gas was first patented and the patent was assigned to a company which essentially buried it.

June 10, 2007, 11:43 a.m."It will clear up a few things about your our government and the corruption of big money."
That assumes that the film is at all accurate, which I don't believe it is. I'd rate it somewhere between Triumph of the Will and a Michael Moore propaganda film.
There are no viable electric cars anywhere in th world, and the makers of the film want to pin that all on evil oil companies and a complicit goernment rather than reality.

June 4, 2007, 12:47 p.m.The ability and technology to produce power from sources other than petroleum have been in existence for at least as long as I have been alive. The status quo in this country has said that these alternatives aren't feasible, too expensive and whatever excuses they could come up with not to use them. A lot of money has been spent to sway the government to make policy that favors the notion and the general public, generally too lazy to educate themselves on things, is easily swayed to believe the same.
