"The study also found that 1.7 New Yorkers have no savings and wouldn't be able to afford food if they lost their jobs."

LOL! I guess that's supposed to be 1.7 million.

Not just in New York. Everywhere. Seems strange, most people do not drive in the city so they do not spend all of the money on gas.

Rents and property are too expensive.

It must be funny to see all of the Manhattenites at the soup kitchen. That is Rudy's fault.

I'd like to see this information get extrapolated for the country. I'm willing to bet that the percentage goes up. It gets harder and harder to make ends meet in this day and age.

Right On!, better family planning, get an education, learn a skill. All of these events could change lives and fortunes. Rent in NYC is insane. How the hell a welfare recipient can afford to stay in NYC is beyond me. Same for the unskilled or womem in dead end jobs shuffling endless paper trails for Corporate and Government make work jobs. $75 grand with a wife and 2 kids is starvation in NYC. Get a skill needed in the Sun Belt like the construction and mechanical trades and say good bye to NYC. The jobs are waiting.

New York is but one city, multiple the cities, towns and other coummunities in America and you will find rampant proverty.

Yes, their is a struggling middle class also that I acknowledge. I hear all the time we are the leaders in the world and have the highest standard of living, untrue, while the ten percent of Americans have most of the money. Naturally the rich with the medias assistance promote our prosperity but its all a sham when you factor in the destitute in America. Many of the poor you can blame for their perdicament but not the majority.

So if you condone what is, sit in your ivory tower and dwell on the fact that you are content.

Someone above said, "You didn't blame Bush", I do along with all past administrations both Dems. & Reps. for failing to address the issue. We desired to land on the moon, we did. What happened to the war on proverty? The rich will hate this post and call me Socialist. I say a blend of idioms will endure in the end.
