Posted by: Neophile 2 years, 6 months agoTheir chief goal, says the company, is to raise awareness among individuals and groups that everything we consume has some impact on the environment. The company is fighting global warming in two ways: encourage carbon reduction, and sell offsets for the remainder.

June 6, 2007, 12:24 p.m.Great information on carbon prints, thanks Neophile.
I have been trying to find legitimate forms of purchasing these credits.
My calculations on home and vehicle/travel are well below the normal. I might purchase some credits in my kids names.

June 6, 2007, 12:36 p.m.I actually plan on bringing this up with the company I work for. Perhaps we can incorporate something like this into our environmental management system.

June 6, 2007, 3:22 p.m.BERLIN â;; Canada, which in April walked away from international targets for cutting greenhouse gases, will test the patience of major allies this week by arguing its approach can help forge a new global climate change deal.
Canada's emissions of greenhouse gases are 35% above where they should be in 2012, when the first stage of the Kyoto Protocol expires. Emissions will climb as the energy industry â;; a major polluter â;; excavates oil-rich tar sands to feed U.S. markets.
"Canada is a country with a growing economy, a growing population (and) a major energy sector so ... we're special, we're unique in the G8," said a senior Canadian official.

June 6, 2007, 6:56 p.m.What would be easier is to plant a tree:
"If this doesn't seem like much, consider that one tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen per year and can absorb as much carbon in a year as a car produces while driving 26,000 miles. Additionally, a single tree supplies enough oxygen annually for a family of four for one year."

June 6, 2007, 7:44 p.m."Everything we consume has some impact on the environment. Each 12 ounce beer consumed results in the consumer releasing more CO2 into the environment than driving a Gas Guzzler 25 miles at 80 miles per hour."
Well, if this is true then how does the CO2 get out of the consumer. I don't see how it's possible.

June 6, 2007, 9:52 p.m.I wonder how much of our woods and planted Cypress tree area is worth in carbon credits. We live deep in the woods and take care of it so I feel that we are doing what we can to off set our foot step.
I wonder if I could sell carbon credits from our woods......

June 7, 2007, 11:11 a.m.I just don't get offsets?
OK so you pay for a tree to be planted in exchange for a flight... or something like that. Welllll... What offsets everything else. The people you pay have to drive to work which results in carbon emissions. Those people have bosses, electricity, heating, cooling, food, cellphones, etc, all of which require energy resource. Those people also have to interact with the tree company which also have employees who use all of the previously mentioned resources as well as fertilizers, and often times other chemicals and big gas guzzling trucks to aid in the growing/planting process.
Is all of this compensated for? I really doubt it. In the end if you buy carbon offsets you are probably contributing to MORE pollution than by not buying offsets.
