Now that this thing is dead (so they say), can we finally get our government to enforce the law?

I am so glad there is a voting record linked right from the article. Everyone should look at their record and praise or punish.

Obama and Clinton in particular refuse to go on record on the issue. Others are hoping you will be happy just that they didn't vocally support it. I am only satisfied with vocal opposition. The rest is political gamesmanship of the worst order.

As I said on another post. We need to secure our borders. That is a bipartisan issue. Let's start with that. Build a wall, set up a barrier, put troops on the border. Whatever it takes to secure our borders from Maine to Washington, and from California to Texas and Florida. Then and only after that has been accomplished can we tackle the illegals that are already here. This problem is to big to handle with a comprehensive bill. We have to work with the things we already have consensus on and push it through. A bill with no earmarks, no pork. The executive has to pull there behinds out of Iraq and use some of that money to protect our borders. We spend more time and money protecting Iraqi and Afghanistan borders than we do our own. The law was passed to start erecting a fence. Executive get with it. Congress start the next phase. Secure our borders!

We need to make sure that there is movement to enforce the laws we already have. That the fencing already voted on is actually constructed. The ports and borders should have been closed on September 12th. This is absurd to try to sort out this entire mess with one bill.

I will contact my representatives again. They must be so tired of hearing from me by now. But I shall do it.

              Thank you for posting this.

I just took a look at the website of my Senator who voted yes.

                http://alexander.senate.gov/

Still trying to boil out all the goo and dribble, but it looks like he sees a real need to create a solid and acceptable solution. Something needs to be done soon and he has a pretty hardline approach to the issue.

I guess it remains to be seen if it's a con, but at least he isn't sticking his head in the sand and hoping the problem will go away.

I personally think they need to kill this bill and start over. It's so one sided that even small compromises can hurt us badly. I think that will be my message to him.

If any of you guys can see holes in his position I would be glad if you pointed them out.

I'm glad that this bill is out of the picture, but there were some good ideas in there. I hope next time around, the Senate will try and fix 1 problem at a time, not the 100 problems of immigration all at once.

No question Kennedy has a soft heart for criminals and no heart for victims. It has always been his weakness. He feels guilty for the existence of crime, I guess. Nevertheless, the bill had many problems that were unacceptable to the majority of the people; a 24 hour limit on background checks, the unenforcability of the Z Visa exit, and most of all, the whole idea that anyone can be granted criminal amnesty for years of criminal activity for paying $200 down and the rest in installments.

Is immigration for sale? If so, to the worst the world has to offer instead of the best? And for whose benefit, the people or the corporations?

I don't care how any of these idiots voted on this, if they weren't screaming and demanding the withdrawl of the whole bill, they don't deserve to stay in the Senate.

They all need an immediate, involuntary retirement.

The Far Right and the Far Left conspired to kill this. So those most angry about illegal immigration strike a blow to ensure that it continues on just as it has.

Realistically, we are not going to fund the law enforcement effort it would take to find, legally process and deport 12 million people. Make it impossible for them to work, and those who can't get back to their own country will be forced to crime to feed their kids.

I think the 24-hour-a-day hate speech of the polar extremes is destroying America. And the way this effort at comprehensive immigration reform played out is a perfect example of that.

Honestly it seems to me that duly considered the inevitable and obvious task of uniting Canada, The United States of America, and Mexico in a healthy region in which people, knowledge, merchandize and capital can move freely belongs to the people of these three countries and not to the governments. But the legislators of these three nations will be quite busy wrapping up the deal in the fairest possible way.

We MUST NOT wait to bite them IF it passes in the night. That is to late. We MUST continue to be after them NOW, like a little dog always nipping at their heels while thry try to fend us off and running away. Emails, phone calls and letters must continue until they finally say "o.K., we get it, we will do as you, the over-whelming majority of the AMERICAN people are telling us to do". Until then, become and remain rabid in your demands! I cannot believe that a few million of them (ILLEGAL ALIENS) marching in the streets and gathering in parks, are going to get their way! They should have ALL been deported, en masse! Just line up the busses and return them to Tijuana!!! But P.C. people think they need to feel sorry for them! Sorry, not me.

The problem is that the illegals are organized and making all the noice you have organizations like la raza and Univision.com They tell them what to do now they are organizing another boicott and a Million People March to The senate , They also have a million signatures of illegals asking for the reform , They are doing all the talking but they are demanding a reform , Until We Demand to our goverment to enforce the laws and to protect us they would not take action , I called yesterday to the senators of my state and i said I was against the bill , I also asked the girl on the phone of how many people against and pro the bill she told me that it was about 40% against . Now if we do not do anything , march , send emails , boycott or do something the illegal would get their way after all the senate want them to get benefits right away and Kennedy want to pardon all the DIU people and gang members if they sign a waiver of pardon saying that they would not do that again is He on crack?

Ted Kennedy is like the majority of our representatives. He killed a girl, paniced and failed to report a accident to hide his drunkeness and got away with it. How many other Americans could then be elected to a high office. He represents hypocritically the Catholic church who needs new catholics from latin American countries to bolster their income. That income is now in short supply with all the pedophile claims paid out by the church. Kennedy is a joke on America.

"who do I vote against in 2008?"

One of the most troubling questions asked by the American public. There is no such thing as a vote 'against' someone. You have to vote 'For' someone. (Though, it would be nice to have votes against as well, it might actually end the 'lesser evil' voting if you could vote FOR the candidate of your choice (whatever their non-chance of winning) and AGAINST the guy who scares you the most.

The radical maniac might get votes from the radical idiots, but would be so overwhelmingly voted AGAINST by the rest of the people that he wouldn't stand a chance. While the moderate candidates that DON'T take a stand on controversial issues (and would rather actually listen and compromise) wouldn't get nearly as many votes against them and the votes for would count that much more.

(Obviously, lawmakers would not go for this because it would DESTROY the two-party system at the cost of their jobs... even if they thought it was a good idea.)
