Gas prices too high? Some say not even close »

Posted by: STONERS 2 years, 5 months ago

While political leaders strive to placate constituents forking over more of their income at the pump, there's a group of energy experts arguing that gas is too cheap.

Instituting the tax increase would mean the poor pay a greater percentage of their income on a commodity everyone is dependent on. An increase could also send shock waves throughout the economy, as higher prices increased the costs of transporting all goods.

Nearly $1.8 billion in motor fuel tax revenue was distributed in 2006. Virtually all of it went to road projects, as mandated by the Ohio Constitution.

The political courage to inflict the pain of higher gas prices for future gain will only come once the issues are understood at a mass level, said Shanahan, who said many people who own a flex-fuel vehicle - running on a large proportion of ethanol - don't even know they have one.

"I don't know if there's enough of us out here telling this story, and for sure most people don't want to hear it,"

I have had only flex fuel vehicles for my family since 93.

Only recently have alternatives appeared in my area and they are only 20-30% alt. fuels.

Mitsubishi vehicles made in Japan have had this option for many years, I think the ones made here are flex fuel as well.

I could agree with this line of reasoning IF we had complete control over the money. You know there will be those skimming and filling pockets as fast as they can. New roads...which government buddies will be involved?

I can't begin to mention how utterly ridiculous and retarded this idea is. It can only come from a government lackey!

It is a fruitless Soviet-style endeavour to price gasoline out of reach for the average working man/woman BEFORE you have enough E-85 to go around.

All this would cause is a shortage of E-85 and people will either not be able to go to work or sacrifice other necessities to buy gas.

Making the infrastructure for plentiful E-85 will not happen overnight. We don't have enough alcohol producers to meet the demand (yet...) and E-85 cannotg be piped through standard pipelines. They are designed for oil and gasoline, which are noncorrosive to steel. Ethanol is corrosive and we will need all new pipelines (glass or teflon lined) or to truck the fuel all over the nation, which will burn more diesel and be really expensive.

The way to solve the problem is by discouraging the American dream of a single family home and teaching people to urbanize where they could take mass transit and live in condos or apartments which take less energy per person. Mass transit should be of the electric type (light weight rail (trolleys) or rail)) where ever possible. We had a great system until Alfred P. Sloan influenced Dwight Eisenhower to put in the interstate highway system, which is both a blessing and a curse.

If done properly this wouldn't be a bad idea. This is how I think it should be done:

                  1) Put $3 a gallon tax on gas.

                  2) Give the money back per capita with our taxes.

That way, the poor would be helped because they tend to use less gas and would get back more money then they spent. The tax on the rich (who tend to drive gas guzzlers) would go up and the middle class would be encouraged to use less gas.

Basically, with the war in Iraq we are paying a tax on gas as it is. It would be more economically efficient if the tax was direct.

I have to agree with engineer on this one. Having traveled a fair amount in Europe, their high gas prices pay for an extensive mass transit system that is very good. They don't pay higher prices just because they are "over there" ha ha heard that a fair amount when I was over there. (Inside joke I guess). Compressing our living spaces would leave more green spaces and farm land. I have seen many old farms turned into shopping centers right here in Virginia. At some point push is going to come to shove. We have a choice as to when this happens. Either, because we are forced to, and the pain lack of planning brings, or because we planned and choose a course of action.

It's too cheap because poor people can still afford it.

Yeah.....get the price up to 12 or 15 bucks or more per gallon. The coolies and drones can wait in line to take the bus and us fat cats can have the freeways all to ourselves! Those who can't afford the luxury of driving can use mass transit. Why should such a precious resource be wasted on the masses. More for us who can pay the price and not sweat it. My oil and refinery stocks will do better, also. This 6 and 7% interest rate is bogus, also. Back when Reagan was president I was getting up to 18% on my CD's! That's some serious change when you've lots of cash sitting around needing to be put to work. Time to get back to those days, too!

There will always be a reason to raise the price of something due to something else. Take corn for instance the federal government actually pays a farmer not to grow corn. Less supply and more demand. A higher price then follows. Control tactic by your Congress for their pocket and power and a kick back for the farmer. I call this an inflation creator. We the People will end up literally fighting our own government for our lives if our elected keep up their dirty practices.

What will happen when the gas is so expensive people cannot drive their suvs to walmart and buy junk.

A lot of food is shipped from overseas. We send fruit and other foods to china to be canned(tell me how this could be cheaper than doing it here).

Ships going back and forth to bring junk here use a lot of gas and create a large amount of global warming.

Oh but that is o.k. because it has to do with ripping off the public(profit).

I don't consider Mr Stubei an energy expert nor do I think Mr Bush ("America is addicted to Oi1") an able leader in solving America's growing energy crisis. Changing American car-dependent culture will take many decades to undo the policies of building highways and suburbs. The Europeans are far more adept at energy conservation than Americans. And, of course, the Japanese who did go to war 60 years ago over Oil have learned a lesson by spending a lot of effort in energy conservation. As for America, the steep rise in gasoline prices should be a wake-up call like Pearl Harbor.

We had an energy policy until Reagan came along. Now it's time to pay the price for all those years of Reaganomics and cheap gas. We ignored the problem as long as possible, now it's back.

Gas is cheap now, but just wait a couple years.

It's time to get control of the government back in to the hands of the people and shut corporate america off of any federal funding. Greed has its limits to the consumer and comparing prices of gas in the US to foreign prices is only a way to increase the greed of the oil companies.

Some ways to reduce consumption is rolling back the speed limits on highways and roads to 55 where vehicles get better gas mileage. Then allow the mom and pop stores in local neighborhoods so people don't have to drive to the store every day. Close the parking lots in high schools and force busing of students to and from schools, there's no reason for students to be driving personal vehicles to school. That would do a lot for the drug problems in high schools too. Forcing carpooling is an impossible task unless businesses sent around buses to pick up its employees. In Utah the public transporation system is a mess and not a public service to get to a job or go shopping.

I don't care if gas goes up. I just drive a little less, keep my 10 year old 4 cyl. car, buy less junk I don't need, eat less (I need to diet anyway). Each time it goes up I spend about 10 seconds thinking about it (while driving) and don't let it stress me out. For me its a way to help make alternate fuels more appealing. I only ask that the increased tax on gas be used to provide me a tax refund or be applied to research on solar cells and other sources of energy. And, again, to H--- with oil and auto companies.
