Hispanic Voters Gain New Clout With Democrats »
Posted by: zaph22 2 years, 5 months agoMrs. Clinton spoke to Hispanic leaders in the Bronx, where she accused Republicans of undermining the immigration bill in the Senate. "The bill was mostly killed by people who don't want any immigration reform and don't want a path toward legalization," she said. "There's a anti-immigrant feeling ...

June 9, 2007, 10:35 p.m.I don't think it's just Hillary that is missing the point here. I think many in Congress are missing the point this is not an issue that is being fought over in the real world. Somehow they are not getting the message, even with all the calls, emails, snail mail, that they are getting. Still they seem to think all us citizens are fine with this immigration (amnesty) bill. I wonder if they'll ever figure it out, or if those that support this bill won't get it until they are voted out of congress. And I think Hillary making the comment she did wou't help her much with a lot of legal voters.
And for anyone that didn't get it before, this bill has always been about trying to increase the voter base, for both sides.

June 9, 2007, 11:54 p.m.Less than 1/3 of the illegal immigrants have a high school diploma, and they are largely unskilled. Legalize them, and they can make more from assistance than in sweatshops. And guess which party will they vote for to keep the entitlements coming?
Any Republican who gets on board with this amnesty fiasco should have his head examined

June 9, 2007, 11:55 p.m.I am sick of the insulting crap that both parties are putting on people who refuse to support this bill. There is nothing more alienating than to be called un-American or racist or even anti-immigrant just because I am pro law and order.
Hillary over this issue alone has just lost any affirmative support she would have had from 2/3 of America. Even if people do ultimately vote for her, she will get that as a consolation prize at best.
I will not raise a dime for her nor ask anyone to vote for her. It is sad that I have nothing more than opposing the greater evil of the Republicans who wanted this bill just as badly as the Dems but possibly for different reasons.
Clearly, no matter what they say, Americans are not so stupid as not to know they have been sold out to the corporate interests in making us all low paid or even slaves if they could. To hell with them all for calling us racists or anti-immigrant as much as I have done for minorities and immigrants, which I will continue.

June 10, 2007, 8:29 a.m.Send email or make calls to your Senators AND to the members of the Senate running for President
Don't believe everything the current presidential candidates say on immigration. Try to determine what their stand on the issue was BEFORE they entered the presidential race.
While Giuliani was mayor of NYC it was a sanctuary city.
Romney was pro-immigration and seemed to favor the immigration bill before he opposed it. Eighteen months ago, he said the idea that illegal immigrants should register with the government, pay taxes, work for a number of years and pay a fee before being allowed to apply for citizenship struck him as reasonable.
Don't believe what they say now!!
Same with the Democrats.
Clinton and Obama were for this bill

June 10, 2007, 9:42 a.m.Zaph... Another great find. Thanks for the work you do to find these!
I agree with everyone here. This bill, as it was written, was a travesty of justice, and a kick in the face to all U.S. Citizens. The soverenty of our country has been being dwindeled away for years, and continues today, with or without this bill. Illeagals can now get Social Security, sent to them here, or in Mexico! How absurd is that? And who in the hell thought of it?
I am NOT anti-immigrant, I AM anti-ILLEGAL immigrant! And the provision that would have allowed them to bring in their families, going around the current application process, you might as well just rent EVERY Bus, Limo & R.V. in the country, to caravan down to Mexico and bring them all in!
Not to mention the entitlement programs, lack of medical screening, the HUGE impact on our schools & roads and the simple fact they BROKE THE LAW with their first step on our soil... it all adds up to a terrible idea for the U.S.A.

June 10, 2007, 2:03 p.m.With all the uproar, I just can't believe they still are even considering this bill, why is it even still an issue? but since it still is, I'm very leary of those who try and side step it.
And comment by Nostalgia-Try to determine what their stand on the issue was BEFORE they entered the presidential race.
DEFINATELY!

June 10, 2007, 2:20 p.m.Again she misses the point. The point of this bill is, "why should we accept a new bill when congress and law enforcement do not enforce the laws we have today. What makes us believe they will enforce this one."
Does anyone really believe a liberal bureaucrat will actually charge an illegal $5000 to become a citizen. Why enforce thast, they do not enforce the ;laws we have today????
Anyone voting for this true sell out should be ejected forceably from public office for dereliction and violation of their oath to uphold the laws of the country and protect our borders.

June 10, 2007, 3:18 p.m.That back tax thing was quietly removed, seems it is as unenforceable as our borders since illegal aliens probably wouldn't declare all that under-the-table illegal income they have acquired through their ongoing criminal enterprise of being illegally employed while illegally in the the country.Hmm lets see can I say illegal again LOL :)

June 10, 2007, 3:37 p.m.Back on topic, with all the hoopla about the hispanic vote I wonder has anybody bothered to poll legal immigrants that did the paperwork and did wait in line.I work with and for people that immigrated here legally in fact a couple of them are still working on citizenship and I can't see they seem enthused by the idea that they wasted their time and money for nothing if all they had to do was just walk in,and yes one of them is originally from Mexico.

June 10, 2007, 3:42 p.m.I want the America I grew up with and know! I do not want America to turn into Mexico nor any South American country.
Many Mexicans and other countries citizens came here illegally to escape Mexico, and So. American countries form of government, lack of jobs and lack of wages. The very thing that the American workers are facing here, today. They need to take a good hard look at what is happening to millions of Legal & US citizens jobs & income losses.
If the Dems & the Pres. get this passed, these illegals, legals and All Americans will be at the mercy of the greedy Have's.
The Hispanic voters might want to be careful what they wish for, because they will not like that new America without rule of law and low wages.
What is to stop businesses from importing cheaper Chinese or other countries laborers to replace these Illegals or legal laborers in the future? Where will cheaper laborers end?
Thanks zaph.

June 10, 2007, 3:48 p.m.The Hispanics have been a part of the culture in the SW since the beginning. They fought with the US against Mexico in the Mexician American war in 1840 and were in the Alamo fighting against the Mexicans.
They don't like the bad governments in Latin American any more than anyone does. A lot of them come here not so much for the money as to get away from the repressive regimes there and they certainly don't want to change the government or political culture here.
The point zaph made about importing cheap labor from someplace other than the Americas should be taken seriously. Europe has imported muslims and have had all kinds of problems. These characters really would like to change our government and way of life for the worse.

June 10, 2007, 5:47 p.m.We would like for our government to recognize what it already has for citizens and get our country back to the great independent nation that it once was. Take care of what we have. Help the people we have to prosper. Not to hinder the American People. Do not take what we have worked so hard for and bring in Aliens illegal and give to them free. Our elected are using treason tactics against it's people.

June 10, 2007, 5:55 p.m.This is all about votes and cheap labor. These politicains want this very badly. They do NOT care what they do to us or our country as long as they stay in power. It is all about money and power.

June 10, 2007, 6:06 p.m.So if all these illegals are given citizenship, what's to stop another 12 million coming here, being the "new" illegals, and waiting for those idiots in Washington to eventually give THEM citizenship???

June 10, 2007, 6:11 p.m.According to today's Christian Science Monitor, in order for the bill to return to the floor, the Republicans will have to remove the amendments they added. Things could get interesting after that. Also, Bush will be meeting with the Repubs to garner support for the measure.
Will John Boener cry over the bill on the Senate Floor (like he always does)?
Will both parties be able to court the immigrant vote if the bill fails?
Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?
Most amusingly from this debate, I see people here complaining about the immigrants changing the "American way of life". It's funny to see people thinking that their way of life is really all that 'good' and even worth protecting, especially in light of the facts about how destructive our way of life is.
Somebody tell me; if we keep the illegals out of the fields, who will pick the veggies and fruits at the prices currently paid to illegals (if they get paid at all)?

June 10, 2007, 6:25 p.m.For any Hispanic voters, the Democratic candidates need to have a universal health program they will support. The lower wage workers must have full coverage. The top three Democratic candidates now have universal health insurance as there best offer a clear wage income test is needed for everyone. For Hispanic small business just an HMO insurance will have a direct negative impact. Getting health insurance dispensation for independent contractors and small business is a must. The Democrats have given labor support to retail Unions. Edwards was active in a local Janitors contract dispute when everyone else was doing the Washington Mall for a holiday event. Talk up what is needed from these guys when you take to the streets next time for passage of something that will work.

June 10, 2007, 6:50 p.m.Well, this so-called "clout" exists mainly in their numberS!
Since most of them came here as illegals, hence beneficiaries of an enormous fake-ID industry along the border, it is questionable if they are objective enough to see that an uncontrolled border and the absence of any meaningful immigration policy will EVENTUALLY mean the end of these United Sattes as "The Goose that lays the Golden Eggs"...
It is quite possible and alarming that with the right to vote, no matter how obtained, they will invite the rest of latin-America to move in and probably institute the same latin sensibilities into our system of Justice....
We seem to have already made a small start with our present AG!

June 10, 2007, 7:19 p.m.Personally I would welcome some refreshment and a women President but "please", not Hillary shrillary. This is a person who desires and needs power. Bill can do his thing and it bothers her not in the slightest, even with all that religion that is imbued withing her character, not.
The both of them, Bill and Hillary are power hungry humans without the moral fiber our leaders must have in the future. Yes, she avows illegals becoming legal, its the votes and thats what counts. She is a force of corruption without ethics that will condone any illegal act to ascend her to her allmighty destiny, in her mind.
Anyone who is not a lifelong career politician and speaks and acts with ethics is the person America should desire, not an old political, immoral person such as Hillary. She is out for Hillary and Bill as First Lady, don't let it happen. I myself will vote Republican if no other options.
