The article, in fact, repeats all pseudo-healthy recommendations of American diet dictocrats, which do not work: to eat a diet with fewer calories and less fat (wrong and dangerous recommendations leading to deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins and crucial for health fatty acids which come from SATURATED fats), to exercise more (leading to faster wear and tear of the body), to drink 8 glasses of water (flashing out minerals and disrupting digestion), etc... Good point, though, is the advice to eat less starchy products - to my surprise, as it contradicts to the American "health pyramid" based on grains. Already for that - vivat! :)

Most of the suggestions are pretty standard though i think a surprising suggestion which is often overlooked is

"Don't eat too quickly. Chew the food slowly and relish every morsel." which is touted as one of the secrets to the effectiveness of the medeterannian diet.

I take issue with articles like this because if you read it carefully you'll see that he is insinuating that people over 45 eat more calories and exercise less. I assure him that I exercise MORE and eat LESS THAN HALF of what I ate in my 20s and I am still suffering with weight gain in my middle. For women a lot of this is hormonally caused and no amount of exercise and dieting will help. I have been on 1200 calories a day for over a year with gym and bike riding 3 times a week and after losing 15 pounds have reached a plateau for several months that will not budge. So this advice will only work so much and then nature does what it wants anyway.

My boyfriend, who just turned 45 has been athletic all his life, runs 2 miles every day and goes to the gym for a strenuous workout 3 times a week, has suddenly sprouted a stomach that is getting bigger no matter what he does. I said, "Welcome to middle age".

So to articles like this, a big BRONX CHEER!

The middle gets better when people sit too much and gravity makes it sag. You have to exercise a lot more than what they say too. Like an hour or 2. Also more strenuous and a lot of tummie exercises. Better to just get the surgery.

I took up cycling last October and have lost 16 pounds and dropped cholestrol 35 points: http://www.roadbikeaddicts.com/rode-off-35-poin...

It's the only thing that really works for me at age 39, along with not pigging out like I did when I was younger.

My only fear though is that if I get injured then I wouldn't be able to exercise and the weight would probably come back on in a hurry.

The point is really not in exercising - fairly moderate physical activity, like daily walking and not spending all your free time in front of TV, is enough. Look at the Europeans! You would hardly see many French people jogging in the morning (actually, people jogging in, say, Marcelle, which I visited recently, are mostly American tourists and expats, and the French are making fun of them). At the same time, you do not see obese people there in the streets, like everywhere in the States.

The key is in what we eat! Breads, cereals, processed junk, too much juices and even fruit, and rancid vegetable oils make us sick and fat.

Just watching what I eat is not enough for me. I'm a computer programmer so I sit in front of a computer most of the day. I have to do something with my body or the weight starts stacking up.

Just reduce your carbs consumption to no more than 30 gr. a day, and walk for a hour before going to bed. :) You'll be amazed with the results!
