Video - Powell: Close Guantanamo Now, Restore Habeas »
Posted by: TechnologyExpert 2 years, 6 months agoThis morning on NBC's Meet the Press, Gen. Colin Powell strongly condemned the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, calling it "a major problem for America's perception" and charging, "if it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo - not tomorrow, this afternoon."

June 10, 2007, 10:42 a.m.He also called for an end to the military commission system the Bush administration has created to try Guantanamo detainees. "I would simply move them to the United States and put them into our federal legal system," Powell said. He scoffed at criticism that the detainees would have access to lawyers and the writ of habeas corpus: "So what? Let them. Isn't that what our system's all about?"

June 10, 2007, 2:32 p.m.How kind of him to speak out now, years after the program began. It would have been nice if he had voiced his supposed opposition to the President's agenda a little more aggressivily when it might have made a difference.

June 10, 2007, 8:18 p.m.I doubt these speeches by him will restore all of his credibility, but it is a sign that more and more of Bush's supporters are leaving his side, dejected and wanting to tell the truth.

June 11, 2007, 1:16 a.m.Good for him, he speaks the truth and God do we need to listen. The Bush Administration has shamed America and they will go down in History as the lowest point for any Presidency. We cannot allow another Bush-like President, we cannot afford or tolerate another debacle like we've witnessed the last 4 years.

June 11, 2007, 4:30 a.m.I don't see how you can't give 'terrorists' lawyers. I'm willing to bet the vast majority, if not all, have no idea about the laws against them nor how to defend themselves (not to mention we seem to be making the rules up as we go along).
Khalid Shake Shake Shake Mohammad is one thing, but how do I know the average Abdel Mohammad is really guilty of what he is accused of being guilty of? Should I just trust my government? Given the facts about Iraq I had relayed to me, I'm leery on simple trust, people.

The concern was, well, then they'll have access to lawyers, then they'll have access to writs of habeas corpus. So what? Let them. Isn't that what our system's all about?"
No, it isn't. American taxpayers should fund the legal defense of prisoners, captured hiding among civilians? What a stupid idea. Colin has officially lost it. Pandering to the liberal media only tarnishes whatever's left of his legacy.
