George Will: Of Tulips and Fred Thompson »

June 11, 2007, 10:09 a.m.From the article:
In a recent speech, Thompson expressed a truly distinctive idea about immigration. Referring to the 1986 amnesty measure that Reagan signed into law, he said: "Twelve million illegal immigrants later, we are now living in a nation that is beset by people who are suicidal maniacs and want to kill countless innocent men, women and children around the world."
Kids, do not try to deconstruct that thought at home; this is a task for professionals. Thompson seemed to be saying that the suicidal maniacs besetting us are among usâ;;are among the 12 million. And that although the maniacs are here, they want to kill innocents elsewhere ("around the world"), too.
But as Thompson ambles toward running, he is burdened by a reputation for a less-than-strenuous approach to public life, and that opaque thought he voiced about immigration looks suspiciously symptomatic of a mind undisciplined by steady engagement with complexities

June 11, 2007, 10:48 a.m.Interesting analogy. Is Fred Thompson running the same course? Difficult to say at this point, but if he gains momentum, especially amongst the conservative population, he may be a force to reckon with.
We are still some time from the primaries, so let's see his stuff.

June 11, 2007, 11:29 a.m.What scares the heck out of me is this. We now live in a day when we face crushing, complex problems that threaten our existence and indeed even the existence as we know it of all mankind on earth. And yet the corporate-controlled media are all in a rush and gush about us needing another man like Regan, who can "make us feel good about America." And so many Americans are buying it!
NOT ME!!! I want the best screaming genius we can find who can sort through the really complex issues in front of us and SOLVE them. If our next president looks like Stephen Hawking instead of some suave Hollywood actor, that's just fine with me. Give me content of character over contour of skin.

June 11, 2007, 11:34 a.m.Give me someone that has the back bone to stand up to this issue for the good of the American People not for the fat cats in business and politicains that see a new voting block. Money and votes is what drives this issue. I mean if the politicians want poor people to help and save why on earth did they feel they had to import them? For pete's sake we have plenty of poor and opressed people in the USA. If this bill passes you and I will be in that line as well. No more middle class for US.

June 11, 2007, 4:07 p.m.In a nice gentle way, George Will said Freddie was a light weight and a Bush clone. I hate to break it to you, but Freddie is no light weight. Forget that he is an actor. He was elected to the US Senate and while there, demonstrated he was not a Yes-man. He is also a lawyer and a lobbyist, aka, he is smart and connected.
Will he make a good President?, who knows, but for sure 12 to 15 months on the campaign trail will allow all of us to get to know him much better. May the best "man" win.

June 11, 2007, 8:55 p.m.Alternet.org has the dirt on him. Besides 'Law and Order' he has spent a long time working as a K Street Lobbyist. As such, guess what he favors? Cutting corporate taxes, even though only 5 percent of corporations actually pay taxes.

If you want to elect a lobbyist, then that is your choice.

June 11, 2007, 9:43 p.m.George Will is the mouthpiece of the "Establishment Republicans" who gave us the two George Bushes. Fred Thompson's greatest sin is simply that he is beyond their control.

June 12, 2007, 12:44 a.m.All these people clinging to "nostalgia". "Oh, the Reagan days". Reagan would know what to do. Thompson's an actor too, maybe he'll be Ok. He's totally at a disconnect with the American people. He follows the Bush line almost to the letter. You saw what happened to Bush and his PNAC stance in 2006. We don't want the same old crap. We want change. We want our government working for us and not vica-versa. You can stick actors and aesthetically pleasing people in, but the problem remains. Are they willing to listen to the will of the people, or will they become dictators like this President did? We want qualified people elected to judgeships. We want qualified people running our government cabinet positions. Tired of cronies. Tired of corporate lobbyist's. We want a government that protects the little guy. We don't want pandering to religious groups. We want a real government. We want it now.

June 12, 2007, 7:12 a.m.I didn't realize that all our problems in this country can be solved by getting rid of "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS".
This stupid subject is what Boneheads" can only come up with on our problems in this country?
I think everyone is smoking Dope, cause they are.

June 12, 2007, 9:05 a.m.Stephen: We will have to wait and see what he has to say and how well he presents himself. Its real simple for me. If he has the most views I agree with and has a good speaking ability and presence, I will vote for him. If not it will be someone else.
