The war in Iraq goes on, but we shouldn't let it overshadow the war at home - one that frequently takes the lives of people who don't deserve to die. It's known as the war on drugs, but it's really a war on people who themselves are not making war against anyone

    The key word in the article is one that has echoes from the 1920's - PROHIBITION. Just as declaring alcohol illegal and waging a "war" against it was a total failure, so too is the war on drugs.

    I havelong felt that addicting drugs should be decriminalized. Not legalized, just decriminalized. My vision is that of drug dispensing centers where addicts can get thier drugs under controlled circumstances, with clean needles, and checks for hepatitis, AIDS, STD's, etc. Drugs should not be legalized and sold in stores like tobacco or alcohol.

    I see several advantages:

    Immediately the profit is cut out from drug dealers. They go out of business; gangs lose a major source of income; street crime is cut; drug cartels go bankrupt.

    Law enforcement funds and resources are free to pursue other crimes - white colar crimes, terrorists, illegal immigrants, etc.

    The population will be safer. Less robberies, drive by shootings; less AIDS, hepatitis.
