The only difference between yard sales, garage sales and garbage pickup is that one of them is closer to the road!

Here's what I learned over the years as a struggling single parent who has not only accepted all kinds of things from people but recycled them:

If it's threadbare either use it as a rag or toss it.

If you wouldn't buy it second hand, at consignment, Good Will, etc toss it.

If it's broken and can not be fixed take it to a recycling center.

If it's been repaired and is now beyond repair toss it.

The best time to buy at Garage Sales are the first two to three hours on the first day.

Bryn Mawr in Mpls St Paul is one of the best neighborhood garage sales in the Metro area. People literally talk about it in the business world, line up a van or truck, and go in groups for it.

Oh this is the time of the year, the signs are posted! The cars are parked. As I drive by, my family will say unequivocally... "NO, don't look, don't stop!!!" :)

Garage sales can be very rewarding. My last 50 cent item, was a round tin cup with wire handles, with a lid, and to my surprise, it is an old civil war soldiers cup, worth $80 to $100; I bought an old Aladdin oil lamp for $1.00 is worth $110, there are alot of treasures that can be found at garage sales.

Someday, I hope to go to that garage sale that starts in Alabama and ends near Cincinnati, Ohio.

            thanks for the article lenseview.

I took my Mom cruising sales all the time. One sale said "Garage sale", first day of sale, only open a couple of hours; and was either picked over real good, or never had much to begin with... as we left I quipped "They left the 'B' off the sign."

So what if there is 99% junk? The 1% that is not junk is often fantastic.

Donate used clothing to Goodwill. Ask for a receipt. The tax write-off will be more than you can get trying to sell out of your garage.
