Censorship's New Ally: The Digital Razor »

Posted by: populist 2 years, 4 months ago

I recently rented the film Manhunter, only to find that a scene was replaced near the end of the movie. This has happened in other films too: Star Wars, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark. It made me think. An entire generation grows up knowing only what a click of the mouse tells them, unaware of the potential power of the "Digital Razor ."

How bizarre is that? It is the studios themselves that are doing this? That is sort of like the meat industry introducing meat from cloned animals without so noting on the product.

This sort of stuff is just getting out of control ...

Among other things, it's about the persistance of memory. Movies are (at least, the more successful ones) cultural touchstones. When we watch a movie with our children, we expect it to show the sames scenes that we remember from our younger days, the same as we expect the Mona Lisa to always look the same, or that Hamlet's soliloquy uses the same words from performance to performance.

Changing the movies denies us this. It gives those who follow a distorted view of our world. And, it's so needless. With DVDs packed with all sorts of inane extras, why not provide both the original and altered versions? That way, we can see the thing the way we remember it, and the producer/director gets to engage his ego by showing us "the way he wished he'd made it".

This story doesn't make sense in regards to George Lucas and his films. Censorship is only when the government forces changes in the media. George Lucas and others have a right to alter their own work, for whatever reason.

            BUSTED?

They shoud've given him a fair trial and then took him out and tied a noose around his willy and then hung him up by it.

It's bad enough when Spielberg replaces the government agent's guns with walkie talkies and screws up a classic movie.

Unfortunately the ultra-cons do this kind of revisionism on reality almost every day on FoxNews, etc.

              Hadn't heard about Manhunter.

Time to start revising the Bible...
