Pace Says He Refused to Quit Voluntarily »
Posted by: TechnologyExpert 2 years, 4 months agoIn his first public comments on the Bush administration's surprise decision to replace him as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Gen. Peter Pace disclosed that he had turned down an offer to voluntarily retire rather than be forced out. To quit in wartime, he said, would be letting down the troops.

June 15, 2007, 2:17 p.m.I am sorry to see a distinguished career end this way. It's a shame that the members of the Bush administration have not served their nation nearly so well nor in the circumstances that General Peter Pace did.

June 15, 2007, 2:40 p.m.Defense Sec. Gates has gotten the word there is true anger from both political party's in the Senate. Sorry this falls on Gen. Pace's term after 40 years of service.

June 15, 2007, 2:47 p.m.General Pace was in conflict with Dems plans for defeat in Iraq. Harry will be remembered for his remarks.

June 15, 2007, 3:02 p.m."To quit in wartime, he said, would be letting down the troops." SIMPLY NOT TRUE.
Were the Commander in Chief to quit immediately that would be the single most intelligent thing he has ever done in his "life". I, for one, would not be "let down" in the least.

June 15, 2007, 3:38 p.m.replacing the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff in the middle of two wars is not a very good sign.
if things were going well, even marginally well, this wouldn't be happening.
so go ahead bush, replace your entire staff. even invent new people to blame for your mistakes (war czar?! whatever).
but we all know where the buck stops.

June 15, 2007, 3:38 p.m.I made the comment that Reid and the Dems want us to fail in Iraq. Do you deny that?

June 15, 2007, 3:47 p.m.Bless Pace for his honesty and virtue. While admitting that he is not perfect, he serves from a sense of duty. If we only had a civilian leader who did that (whatever happened to the impeach bush/cheney movement). Thank you Santa for letting simonsez have it once again. Too bad he is a useless fool who is 2 far gone (with Obaku next in line)

June 15, 2007, 3:50 p.m.How come all the generals in this Iraqi excursion fall so far short of Powell & Swarzkopf from the first Gulf Conflict.
From "Shock & Awe" Franks to this guy Pace they all seem mediocre.

It is about time that some one,the voters of this country, let these liberials know that they are in office to do the will of the PEOPLE,not there party bosses.
It is about time that the american voter demands TERM LIMITS in order to get these career politicans out of office, let them try to make it in the out side world, hell they couldnt hold a job and if they could it wouldnt be very hard

June 15, 2007, 4:40 p.m.It is unbelievible that neocons are on here blaming Reid for what happened to Pace. How stupid, moronic, and out of touch with reality can you possibly be?
This all falls at the feet of Bush and his ill-conceived and bungled Iraq war. Pace probably made the mistake of telling Bush the truth about something, so they decided to get rid of him, just like they have any general who told Bush the truth.

June 15, 2007, 4:54 p.m.BUSH THE REDEEMER!!!!
Who else could have made Richard Nixon, Paul O'Niel, Peter Pace and so many others look good?
Que Milagros!!!!
Perhaps there is something to his stated religiosity.

June 15, 2007, 5:10 p.m.It was bound to happen taking into account the insanity of this war by Bush and his ultra conservative administration. They call it passing the Buck, something Harry Truman adhored by saying, "The buck stops here".
I am sure many of you knew for certain that this was a terrible mistake from day one. We are not in power our idiots are. Now I probably made some of you made by avowing that the war was an unwinnable war a long time ago. That the surge was a joke that would lead to failure and the installation of other brass would also lead to failure. I do feel some empathy for the military Brass but like Bush they failed to heed history, Vietnam. No civil war can be won with millions of our soldiers like Vietnam. We are now perceived the aggressor in the world.

June 15, 2007, 5:27 p.m.Hey Teagan-
Curious do you have access to the names and ranks of the fallen?
I feel compelled, Quaker peacenick that I am, to read and mourn the loss of all our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters.
I've been rather concerned at the fact that there is an extremely large amount of officers and no-coms falling. I also understand that there is a huge failure in retaining those officers and non-coms when their tours are over.
How in gods name are we to continue at this rate with out a draft? In a business myself which require acquired knowledge I can't help but think that loss of qualified officers and non-coms is a devastating prospect to the current state of the military.
I mean we're pulling all the bone headed Hitler/Bonaparte strategical failures with two plus current fronts and seeming no end in sight in opening more. Surely as a woman in the military you are concerned as well?

June 15, 2007, 7:50 p.m.Proud of never served the militar under a criminal like Bush,However, in the instance the chairman of the joint chiefs of staf, he is is been serving the US for years and his experience is greater then the coward war dodger Bush who not only did not serve, but betrayed this nation, therefore, Bush must go and allow the people with experience stay, I find repugnant to have to obey orders from a traitor who auto attack the US on 911 to get an excuse to loot the oil resources of Iraq. So if someone has to go that person is the Succesor of Hitler the one and only Bush. References from:

Such judgmental behavior for a little levity!

June 15, 2007, 8:31 p.m.My comment is, I have never seen anyone use so many ill-informed repugnicant talking points as Teagen and she so desperately wants to be right its almost heartbreaking. I wish you could suddenly see the light Teagen but you have neo-repugnicant blinders on. The only points you believe have any merit are the neo-convict ones and after seven flipping years to STILL blame clinton for everything going wrong in Bushy America, well, I wonder if, You are fully functional up top.

June 15, 2007, 8:48 p.m.Maybe when Pace said, to quit in war would be letting down the troops, he was referring to Vietnam and Lebanon, where, when the going got tough, the US Military cut and ran! Maybe Pace didn't want to do that again? Maybe Pace knew that new modern wars in invaded countries are not about lining up your tanks against their tanks. General Patton would have been slaughtered where you cannot identify your enemy.
Maybe Pace wanted to assert the military OVER the White House cadre of power, which the military SHOULD have done during 9-11 when CHENEY, of all people was running war games and wouldn't allow the military to take charge or scramble aircraft!
The Military's task is to protect America, Pace and others need to take charge, even if the White House doesn't like it. You better believe that America is F@#í up, and the military and some of those honest men need to step into the breech and quit allowing adventurers like Cheney to lose more youg men's lives.

June 15, 2007, 10:19 p.m.This story is about Gates taking Gen. Pace off the line. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates served as Director of Central Intelligence from 1991 until 1993. Once CIA always CIA. The first George Bush was CIA. I think the battle for control is inside Washington between the CIA Langley crowd and the new Military in the Pentagon. They are taking names and getting things in order. Every time I hear Gates he has one more piece of the bad news given to him in Baghdad or out of the Pentagon. Before September he may give Congress the bad news and we can see which way this is really going to go. I just get that vibe from his looking into the reality of Iraq.

June 15, 2007, 11:42 p.m.People who dodged draft should not have the authority or power to send our military into combat!
Shotgun Dickie is one such coward, along with his puppet. They cheat and lie, and our soldiers die!
Don't blame Gen. Pace for this disastrous war in Iraq. PLACE THE BLAME FAIRLY AND SQUARELY ON SHOTGUN DICKIE AND HIS PUPPET!
