June 23, 2007, 6:42 p.m.the fda is cutting back on food analysts. sounds like a pretty bad idea right now, given the recent exposure of so many problems in the food supply chain. and congress shouts, wants to do hearings, investigate -- that's a good thing too. only what congress doesn't acknowledge or shout, at least in the photo ops and press conferences, is that they're the ones who have to fund the fda. so, yes, cutting staff is probably not a good idea. but, if congress doesn't like it, in addition to holding hearings, etc., what it ought to do is examine fully the fda budget, what's being spent where; and, if the fda doesn't have the money to cover all the publicly desired increases in inspector and analyst staff costs, congress ought to take real responsibility and explain to the public the increased needs and, as appropriate, fund the agency properly.
this article lays out pretty well the congressional tendency to make noise & complain, but not too effectively take real action, be accountable.

June 23, 2007, 6:54 p.m.I think that we are in need of some 'comprehensive overhaul' of most government departments. The lack of a business and management planning is surprising, considering the number of people employed with business degrees.
Wow, truely amazing! The reason for the FDA, is to provide quality/safety protection cor the consumers. Congress needs to do something to fix the FDA.
If anything we need more lab and field employees, and fewer people sitting in their offices doing paperwork! This would permit money for hiring more lab/field employees and new more modern equipment.
Thanks Neophile, great find, need to be kept informed.

June 23, 2007, 10:55 p.m.Fully funding the FDA would really upset the commie Chinese,at a time when the commie Chinese are complaining that we are too picky about what we are willing to have in our food does anyone think our Congress would stand still for that!
Whats a little anti-freeze or botulism among friends.
