Christopher Hitchens: An Atheist Responds »

Posted by: Beau7890 2 years, 3 months ago

It's uncommonly generous of Michael Gerson ["What Atheists Can't Answer," op-ed, July 13] to refer to me as "intellectually courageous and unfailingly kind," since (a) this might be taken as proof that he hardly knows me and (b) it was he who was so kind when I once rang him to check a scurrilous peacenik rumor that he was a sec

I was going to write a response to this editorial, but I'm glad to see that Hitchens took the time to respond. He makes the argument more forcefully than I could ever have by putting the onus on the faithful to explain precisely why they think nonbelievers are incapable of morality.

      This is a fantastic response.

Very pointed and well written article.

A couple of points. The actions of most relgious evil actions was not in fact relgious in origin. They were for power and money. A fact that any atheist could have done for the same reason. Relgion was and is used as an excuse for all kinds of evil.

The recent PBS special on the some of the Inqesitions points out that money and desire for control was the main causes. Nor relgious fevor.

Many of the evils done by relgionist are against the very laws they say they support. A true Christian who says that he loves others as himself would not murder anyone. Since that is against what he supposed to be standing for. But a hypocrite who only pretends to believe but does not really whould have no problem doing evil.

I enjoyed Hitchens response to Gerson's article, which I also enjoyed. I couldn't help but think after Gerson's article that the righteousness of the moral superiority is a great tactic to control the masses, religion always seems a great tool to get masses of people to behave how you want, even if that task is outright murder, such people feel justified when back with the morality of religion.
