The true nature of the American Religious Right movement. »
Posted by: PaganGodess 2 years, 5 months agoMany other Religious-Right myths just beg to be challenged: Abortion is murder? Not according to Exodus 21 [22], which considers killing a fetus only a minor misdemeanor.

July 14, 2007, 11:28 a.m.Homosexuality condemned by "millenia of moral teaching"? Pure fiction. The ancient Greek and Roman civilizations considered homosexuality perfectly normal, so normal that in fact they did not even have a word for it. Many native societies considered it normal and acceptable as well. And even in the Christian world, there was never a universal agreement that homosexuality was wrong.
Interesting!

July 14, 2007, 1:38 p.m.pagan godess:I have always considered myself pretty learned to bible passage and interpretations. You have supplied a link for passages I have overlooked and not come to understand, and there are several. How wonderful for me, thank you. No, I am not a believer of the bible, word for word. God has written his words in my heart, not in some book for men to corrupt and bend. Even tho, considered christian by nature and teachings, I have always believed a woman's body to be her sole property and any decisions for that body, hers alone. My exceptions with abortion, stem only as it might be used for contraceptive measures, for laziness or forgetfulness. This I do not condone in my heart. And again, thanks for the links.

July 14, 2007, 5:40 p.m.Huge distortion Regarding EX 20:22-23. It's your kind of comment that causes people to believe the Bible is full of contradictions. The verses are referring to an incident where men are striving, wrestling, fighting, definitely a confrontation, where a woman(could be a wife of, sister to one of the men) who is pregnant tries to intervene on behalf of one of the men or just trying to stop a fight, gets injured and loses her baby. It is an accident, wasn't a planned assault to destroy the baby, just an accident. This doesn't downplay the value of the fetus at all, accidents happen. If we killed all who caused an accident from which someone died there would be a lot of dead people. In fairness it is an act not worthy of death, but there should be some compensation which God leaves to the father, husband. On the other hand if mischief follows, or the man continues to pursue the fight, then his life is taken for the life of the fetus. Very fair and great value to fetus and family.

July 14, 2007, 8:12 p.m.I don't think religious belief or faith plays any great role in the "religious right", its just a tool they use to control vulnerable minds. Why did Pat Robertson fund Wally Hilliard, in his failing airline business in Naples, FL? When Mohamed Atta and other 9/11 terrorists were the only students there? I feel sorry for people who get their religion from such vampires. There is no 'balm in Gilead' for those who sit at Satan's knee and suckle at a demon's breast. Why are so many priests and leaders of churches caught soliciting prostitutes and homosexuals? They do not practice what they preach. They are not the Church of Christ, they are the anti-Christ.

July 15, 2007, 1:13 a.m.The Religious Right is a fascist political movement disquised as a religious movement. American Idiot's statement that they represent the anti-Christ is accurate. The basic modus operandi of RR is to play on people's fears of a fictionalized reality in which real social ills are greatly exaggerated. The RR is well-organized and uses proven psychological techniques to prey on the vulnerable minds of people in stressful situations. Essentially, the RR offers people a well-packaged set of solutions for all of life's problems in exchange for their votes. There is lots of corporate money behind the RR, and one finds many corporate-friendly details in the ideology of the RR, particularly the opposition to environmental and safety regulations and to corporate taxes. One of the most insideous aspects of RR is the effort to replace all mainstream institutions, including science and education, with sham "Biblical" alternatives.

July 15, 2007, 7:27 a.m.Wel this is certainly an interestin story.
An I appreciated readin them comments between Son of Mask and that deathray fella.
I likes it most because they touched on the belief of when does life begin. See, we Christian Conservatives believes so strongly in the preciousness of life that we are willin to take a risk that we is worng about when life begins to protect the unborn.
Although, I havta admit it I occasionally wonder why we dont take a risk that we are wrong bout the concept of global warmin an how humans might be contributin.
I mean, whut is religion but an guide for purposeful livin. Seems like lately, all we wanta do is put the hate on Al Gore for claimin he wants to make the world aware of the consequences of poeples choices.
Seems like that is sumpthin we Christians should be involved with.
I mean, we do believe in right livin.
Oh well, the media and the paster says Al Gores the debil, so I guess maybe thats why I dont like em.

July 15, 2007, 9:56 a.m.Debating abortion or homosexuality is irrelevant. What needs to be discussed is the xian Fundies trying to make this a Xian nation and have to follow the xian religious laws. This is similar to the muslim Fundies trying to make every nation follow the muslim religious laws.
The purpose of our constitution is to keep the nut cases alone with themselves and their ideas compartmentalized in their chuches.

July 15, 2007, 11:40 a.m.In "American Fascists," Hedges discusses how the Religious Right has launched an assault on language, redefining for example the word "freedom" into the "freedom" to do as God requires. Thus, when the authoritarian followers of RR hear them, such words have an entirely different meaning. It calls to mind the logo on one of the government ministries in Orwell's "1984": "Freedom Is Slavery."

July 16, 2007, 3:01 p.m.Thank you for thoughtfully engaging the community in this discussion. Unfortunately, those who have been indoctrinated into the religious right culture of hate, ignorance, and intolerance will not hear your message, because they are completely brainwashed and indoctrinated. They'll argue that their beliefs should carry equal weight with reason and fact. Of course, they will claim they do have "evidence," since ancient mythology has found its way into books and powerful people have deceived them into believing this is so. Thank you for speaking truth.
