Posted by: ketanshah1 2 years, 5 months agoRecovery workers were to begin searching at dawn Thursday for victims missing in a massive bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that killed at least seven people and sent dozens of vehicles plunging into the Mississippi River. Aug. 2, 2007, 10:27 a.m.Boston's Big Dig first comes to mind. Here in the Denver area a family of three were killed instantly when a bridge girder fell and sheared the top off their SUV. A building's partially completed cement floors collapse killing a couple of workers. The list goes on. Are we allowing building practices and materials to be compromised in order to save a few dollars and a few days. Are our building and construction supervisors, officials and managers qualified and trained adequately to be able to prevent the preventable. Accidents will happen but as of late is seems far too many are occurring to let statistics or fate or whatever be given the blame.
Our infrastructure is aging and is requiring more and more care. I'm not sure the government knows what do to other than ignore the problem(s) and hope it goes away.
May God care for the people of Minneapolis; those families who lost their loved ones and the community at large.

Aug. 2, 2007, 10:38 a.m.20 to 30 people are missing and many more of the injured are in critical condition. Thus, the death toll will more than likely rise. Many cars are actually totally submerged in the Mississippi River.

Aug. 2, 2007, 10:41 a.m."On The Colapse of the Bridge Accross the Mississippi."
The falling appart of this bridge probably could not be predicted down to the day, but there is no general funding for auditing, repair and replacement of the largest part of the US roads, bridges and other public works projects. There are rail road bridges that are 100 Years old. President Bush has done more to put us in peril by avoding looking at this part of the USA, than any thing that the terrorists could have ever done to us. President Bush has done a lot to help the terrorists out by being a politician not a statesman.

Aug. 2, 2007, 10:47 a.m.With money being tighter and politicians scrambling to save a buck, what did you expect from our leaders. Bush has/is squandering billions overseas in wars and outright foreign policy bribery. New Orleans and numerous disasters are not being noticed while Bush follows his agenda of lunacy.
I and many have been saying you cannot be the worlds policeman while squandering our resources to promote our agenda. Our infrastructure is suffering and this bridge collapse is but one disaster that will occur without the necessity of a terrorist. Bush is not a leader for America, hell he could not even run a 7/11 convenience store as he has shown he could not handle the 9/11 event.

Aug. 2, 2007, 10:50 a.m.Ageing infrastructure is a problem nation-wide. Remember the steam pipe that blew up in NYC recently. Locally we have burst water mains routinely. Lots of deferred maintainence out there.

Aug. 2, 2007, 11:39 a.m.Sadly, I am watching Pawlenty on TV and he is despicable since he trying to deflect the blame by saying that the transportation board did not tell him that the bridge needed to be replaced immediately even though the board told him that the bridge was deficient. He is more concerned about his political future rather than the welfare of the people.

Aug. 2, 2007, 12:26 p.m.Sad. It was an important thoroughfare. How's the rest of the infrastructure?

Aug. 2, 2007, 12:28 p.m.The government does not want to spend any preventive money on anything. Someone told me the government is like a wheel-the object is to make the wheel keep going around even if the spokes are missing.
I don't think their will be too much lawsuit money left to pay the victims.
It costs about $30,000 per person to be airlifted after an accident. I am sure a lot of hopeless and dead were flown-just to make money for the state and county. Shame.

Aug. 2, 2007, 12:32 p.m.I wonder who will cover the medical. When you are injured in an automobile in my state the insurance must pick up the tab.
A lot of people only have $5000 limited medical per person. I bet they will not pay since it was the bridges fault.
Maybe they can say they collided with a vehicle in midair and blame the other driver.
I wouldn't expect bush to open up the feds pockets any time soon-people will have to wait in line behind Iraq, free medical to the world, hurricane victims, veteran's hospitals, tsumini, etc. With ignored we are not in an inflationary period-just do not know if any funds are available.

Aug. 2, 2007, 1:20 p.m.It's sad that even a tragedy like this can't bring some people together. They are so consumed with hatred for President Bush that they have to throw in their little digs.
If they weren't so offensive to the human spirit of this country, they'd be pathetic.
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, survivors, and their families.

Aug. 2, 2007, 2:01 p.m.If the local taxpayers don't want to pay for infrastructure improvements, then it won't happen. In my area we need a new jail/courthouse, middle school and renovated fire station which was never meant to be a fire station in the first place. The voters twice voted down the jail/courthouse. "Who cares if it's overcrowded. It's not the Hilton, after all." The 60yo overcrowded firetrap of a middle school with extension cords strung all over the place ("If it was good enough when I went to school there [30-40years ago] it's good enough now") and the fire station have been voted down once. The fire station is on the ballot again and a citizens' committee has just proposed a raise in the sales tax to fund more police and sheriff deputies and a juvenile holding area in the seriously overcrowded courthouse with the proviso that NONE of the monies be spent on a new jail or courthouse. We shall see what happens in the coming election.

Aug. 2, 2007, 2:18 p.m.hey california, pay attention, the national guard was there helping...I suggest you quit trying to ban the military there, for its not good to bite the hand that feeds you. If a disaster happens in california, and i was a military person, I wouldn't lift a finger to help any of the bstrds......

Aug. 2, 2007, 7:06 p.m.Good luck getting the federal aid to fix this bridge. Louisiana is still awaiting federal funds for roads and bridges damaged by Katrina. Meanwhile, we are spending something like 8 billion dollars per month in Iraq.

Aug. 2, 2007, 7:47 p.m.Absolutely pathetic that the "students of Knuckle head U" took no time to blame Bush for this.
What a bunch of pathetic crack heads.
May The Lord almighty ease the bereavement and suffering of the families and their injured.

Aug. 2, 2007, 7:54 p.m.After the Nisqually quake the engineers have identified two bridges that could collapse in the next earthquake. The state and local politicians have dawdled and fought among themselves over how to fix those bridges and where to find lots-of-money for their preferred (most expensive) proposals. Seems no closer to actually getting fixed.

Aug. 2, 2007, 7:55 p.m.Ruggaboo - You are such a neocon follower without your own opinion you cannot grasp the concept of past events. One trillion dollars could have easily repaired that bridge before it fell instead of the insanity of Iraq. New Orleans is still not repaired yet you condone your idiot totalitarian, President Bush baby.

Aug. 2, 2007, 8:06 p.m.ABANOCLA: Responding to your message above, in my original post I did not assign blame to a party or individual. I simply stated the facts:
Promised Katrina aid has not reached Louisiana and we are spending something like 8 billion per month in Iraq.
Those are the facts. I'll leave the blame game up to you.
