Marriage equality is about more than just granting equal rights to gays and lesbians. It is about making a case for equality for all people. Second-class citizen status through civil unions only demeans our fellow Americans. We are a better nation than that. We need to cast off prejudice and accept people as they are, not as we want them to be.

      Thanks for this David.

I just e-mailed it off to my State Senator...who is on record as supporting marriage equality...but is fighting an up-hill battle in our Republican controlled Senate..

I think it would be a good idea if we all sent this to our local politicians and elected officials....running for president or not.

I'm so glad the "Democratic candidates are showing increasing comfort addressing the need to end discrimination..."

Isn't that what they were supposed to do in the first place?

        Sorry d- I shouldn't be bitter.

        It's a good advance forward.

It will take time. But having grown up in the South when Southern states practiced what amounted to Apartheid, I remember all the arguments. The racial bigots then used the same trite fears of social discord that todays gender bigots use.

This is definitely about equality for all people and the acceptance of many definitions of marriage. We face a similar issue with our readers... Many of them are in multiple partner relationships.

Can you just imagine applying for an insurance card for both of your your partners and your combined set of children?

A good option in my opinion is to stop providing special privileges for married couples and treat everyone the same - as individuals.

I think Bikini Island would be a great place for all gay and lesbian people to move to. Since they don't want to pro-create, the island makes perfect sense. If they want to get married, they can do it there. I am all for gays getting married, going to war, going to the front lines, and sitting in the front sections of a bus going off of a cliff. On Bikini Island, they can live the lifestyle they want, and no one will moan and groan about their sickening behavior because they will all be of one mind and one accord. We both get what we want. They get to be married, and I get them out of my town, state, and nation. :)

Homosexuality is not an ethnic group. It is not a race. However like all immorality it is the acceptable thing to do anymore for some.

                Bill Clinton represents both.

Actually, the strategy in play in most states has brought about considerable change in just the last five years. We have one state that has gay marriage, and three with civil unions. A total of six others have domestic partnerships. They are small steps toward progress, but with each victory we come one step closer toward equality.
