The basic idea is good, but without a paper trail it would be difficult to see if the results were accurate or changed. Software can be hacked or programed to respond in a certain way contrary to the users intent.

I still prefer using paper forms (without chads). :)

This is yet another example of how the abuse of technology is eroding our democracy.

I believe that even though I am an engineer, I do not believe electronics should be used in any voting machine because of vulnerability to hacking, and possibly failure of the electronics system.

          nice one neo.

the UC Davis study really proved how hackable these systems are. in some cases they didn't even need the source code to break in and change the vote tally.

according to the findings, the study "demonstrated that the security mechanisms provided for all systems analyzed were inadequate to ensure accuracy and the integrity of election results and of the systems that provide those results."

          ouch.

          here's the study overview:

          our democracy is at stake.

              neo,

              What an eye-opener!

I had suspected dirty tricks in 2000 Presidential Elections, but it was suspicion until now!

Now we have a smoking gun!

Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Pat Leahy, Harry Reid, Chuck Hagel..

What are you guys waiting for?

Start getting those subpoenas out for all of these rascals! They have DEFRAUDED all of us and helped put an impostor in the White House! This is even worse than treason!

              Impeachment Now, Vigilance forever!

Well, there shoulnt be a problem here. I mean, you can always doo a recount on the ballots.

Course, ifn you lose the ballots for some reason - then you got problems, I suppose.

Liek for instance, if a major state, liek Ohio, which won the election for our Christian Conservative candidate, Goerge W. Bush, needed to have the ballots recounted. Then that would answer any questions.

Course, lets say the election was monitored by some far right, extremeist Christian Conservative REpublicans, and they threw awanobody could determine if there was election malfeesance.

                Hey, you know whut?

                Thats actually whut happened!

                Imagine that!

The Lord works in mysterious ways.

Hacking Democracy was one of the creepiest documentaries I've ever seen.. paper ballots only, plz.. There looks to be no solution in cases of mass fraud when the supreme court is stacked, we all get hosed.. somebody needs to explain how a single county can report votes in the negative thousands and think their system is sound. What's our recourse if another election is rigged because I'm not moving to Canada anytime soon..

                    Thanks, neophile!

I meant to stream this last night after it aired, but I spaced it out...

IMO, this should be a POLITICS story, but we are talking about the technology that counts our votes...

I'll go ahead and vote and I'll comment after I've watched it. Right now I'm streaming a replay of Thom Hartmann, so it'll be a short while.

In the meantime, I'll spread the word about this story because this is an extremely important issue.

The only way that an electronic machine will ever be reliable is if:

All the software is tested, re-tested and re-re-tested by a team of professional hackers, the code is certified by a team of software experts, burned into a read-only chip, and one instantaneous paper copy as a receipt to the voter with a proper bar code, and 128-bit encrypted backup on an on-site server and simultaneously on the Internet. This will create an irrefutable record.

There will be NO PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE! If any company wants to develop such a machine, they will enter into a contract with guaranteed order for two election cycles.

This process cannot be accelerated for some political expediency or for some artificial deadline. Reliability, verifiability and transparency will be the requisites of such a system.

Until this is done, a machine like the one developed and used in New York State for over 105 years without ANY fraud should be the gold standard!

The only reason that this has been allowed to continue past 2000, when a full scale investigation should have been done (& I believe the Florida vote should have been redone), is that CONS had both houses and the presidency & our Supreme Court. AND, CONS own the media. Without the vote, we have no democracy. The vote IS the democracy. People are going to have to choose. Freedom, or CONS. It literally boils down to that. NO private company should be making voting machines. All votes should have a paper trail. All voters should have a receipt. The handling of votes, however they're obtained, should have oversight at all times. I pick the U.S. Marshall's office to take care of that.

This report should outrage all who watch it. At the very least, a verifiable paper trail is needed (I tend to lean toward verifiable paper ballots). I am not someone who wants to retreat to the 20th century, but we must have documentation of our vote. In the 21st century, that should NOT be a problem.

I lack sound on my computer, but I am aware that the two largest voting machine companies, Diebold Election Systems and Election Systems and Software, are controlled by Christian reconstructionist brothers Bob and Todd Urosevich. Christian reconstructionists would turn the United States into a Christian theocracy and kill all unbelievers, adulterers and witches, possibly by stoning. Just download "Christian Statesman" stoning.

The rest of the voting machine companies have more in common with Al Capone, than Torquemada, but they are also bought and paid for by the Republican Party.
