Aug. 21, 2007, 11:55 a.m.Interesting that 57% have gone without insurance for a period of time in their lives. That's a huge percentage.

Aug. 22, 2007, 6:18 a.m.Here's the crux of the thing. For most people, health care is likely to be less expensive than insurance. When I had subsidized insurance through my work, I discovered that I was actually paying more, even subsidized, than I would have been charged for the individual clinic appointments and medicines.
Catastrophic health care and preventative health care for children and the poor are the areas places that we should concentrate our attention. Tax exempt savings accounts would actually work for the average middle or upper class American. Keep in mind I'm talking about the average. If a family experiences a major medical emergency, that puts them in a completely different situation.

Aug. 22, 2007, 4:46 p.m.I have enough insurance companies that are calling and sending information on their healthcare plans that they are offering to my deceased husband, who has been deceased nearly a year. Evidently the insurance companies did not get a death notice from what should be Private Social Security information.
I know that most insurance companies today, will not cover any previous existing conditions, even if you do not discover it until after you have begun coverage.
Good idea to have a forum/discussion on what it is like to be without healthcare insurance. I just would not want to have to give my full name. I like the 'don't call me, I will call the insurance companies for information' better.
Thanks tehranchik, for the article.
