Republican support for the Iraq war remained on shaky ground in Congress but wasn't lost after a four-star general recommended keeping some 130,000 U.S. troops in the country through next summer.

A prominent Republican on Tuesday said he remains deeply skeptical of the U.S. war strategy in Iraq, comparing the long and bloody military campaign to a farmer risking his savings to plant on a flood plain.

Make no mistake. We are not building 14 permanent military bases and the largest fortified American Embassy anywhere in the world just to bring the benefits of democracy to the poor Iraqi people. This was NEVER about that, any more than it was about WMDs or any of the other moving-target rationales the Administration has trotted forward as convenience demanded. This is about the permanent occupation of Iraq and the greater Middle East on a scale similar to that of the Roman Legions in the Holy Lands 20 centuries ago.
