A row of beds lies empty in the emergency ward of Baghdad's Yarmouk Hospital. The morgue, which once overflowed with corpses, is barely a quarter full. Last month the fall was particularly dramatic, with 70 percent fewer bodies and half the number of wounded brought in compared to July, hospital director Haqi Ismail said.

The relative calm at the Yarmouk hospital lends weight to U.S. and Iraqi government assertions that a security campaign launched around Baghdad in February has achieved results.
Bad news for the Congressional Retreat and Surrender Caucus.

There is no question that if you flood a particular neighborhood with security forces, violence in that neighborhood will go down. So this is partially due to the extra boots on the ground and also largely because the old Baghdad that was mostly Sunni is now the new ethnically cleansed Baghdad that is 65% Shiia. Whole neighborhoods have been ethnically cleansed. And thus, in those neighborhoods, sectarian killings are down. But overall violence and deaths across the country are substantially up over this time last year. We're just playing a game of Whack-em and we don't have enough troops to cover all the gopher holes.

I really hope that our troops will be brought home in victory. I just don't see how though without continued occupation and increased ground troops. We're successful where we have a big presence, but the fighting continues in other areas. The article even confirms this.
Now we are paying insurgents to fight on our side! How long is that going to work? Sure we have a better benefit package and you get a new toaster oven for signing a friend, but one day you're shooting at each other and the next day you're bunk buddies?!
I would love to see America claim success and get our troops the hell out of there, but even Gen. Petraeus didn't seem overly confident that our troops were having the impact intended when American forces were increased.
So, aniokly, how do you see the U.S. pulling a victory out of this? I just want to hear your realistic thoughts on what is supposed to happen here.

Perhaps they heard that troops were actually going to be sent home so they didn't have to defend THEIR country anymore so they stopped fighting to motivate us to get the hell out of there...
