Romney Shouldn't Equate Mormons, Christians »

As Mitt Romney scours the South for endorsements from evangelical leaders, he is getting some unusual advice on how to explain his Mormon faith: Don't try to be one of us. ``I told him, you cannot equate Mormonism with Christianity; you cannot say, `I am a Christian just like you,''' said Representative Bob Inglis.

I think this is ridiculous. This is why religion should not be an issue when choosing a leader.

One thing that irritates me about Mormons is their baptizing people who are deceased into their religion. Their Genealogy site is great, but when you know the purpose is to track down essentially EVERYONE so they can baptize them Mormon by proxy, it's really creepy.

The idiot drove for 12 hours with his dog strapped to the roof of the car. When it crapped itself, he stopped to hose down the carrier & the dog, then got right back on the highway.

Wow. That's pretty bad. Do people generally do that? I've never heard of such a thing. It's a station wagon, they couldn't leave space for the carrier in the back and put more of their crap up on the roof? Or let the dog lay across the laps of some of their boys? Poor Seamus!

These religious tests are getting pretty old. People who impose them deserve what they get politically - which is usually nothing.

I'm sorry but you cannot, if you take even a distant (or especially a close) look at Mormonism and their basic tenets, claim that Mormons are Christians.
Plus you have to wonder about a religious group that *needs* so strongly to claim that they are Christians.

I love it when this particular piece gets quoted, it shows a complete ignorance of history:

Revelation was written, probably, in the first century AD. At the time there were hundreds of 'books' in the Bible. The Bible was not canonized until the late fifth century AD at which time many, many books were dropped and some added. In fact, if one were to be completely honest the Bible that we see today did not really come into being until the Council of Trent in 1546. Some denominations of Christianity still consider the "apocryphal" books canon and others do not.

You know, I'd be tempted to say that any talk of religion should be absolutely BANNED from political speeches and/or party platforms - just on 1st amendment principle - but then we wouldn't be able to find out who among them was REALLY nuts vs those who are just ordinary nuts. Far as I can tell, Mormons are REALLY nuts. It's bad enough to have an invisible friend, but to rely on a man who needed medication (Smith, that is) in the best case or was a really foul con-man in the worst case, for their spiritual guidance - wow, that's going some distance from the SANITY marker. Sure, everyone needs a hobby, but much like pedophilia, Mormonism should be kept very much to yourself if you don't want people to look at you funny. Oh - not to mention that Mormons don't seem to MIND pedophilia in some cases...

It is no more possible to define what is/is not a "CHRISTIAN" religion in just 2 brief sentences than to describe how a jet airliner works in just 2 brief sentences...
BUT, I have composed my definition of a "CHRISTIAN" religion, in the alloted space of less than 3 Propeller posts.

My above posts are a brief definition. The definition is not meant to be defensible in each detail, because it is an abridged definition, not a comprehensive one, because of format limitations.
But I trust it enumerates the common ground that all "Christians" can affirm.
