My favorite line FTA - pretty much sums up Rudy, "But he obviously is opportunistic with his religion as he is with everything else."
Very, very opportunistic AND this should be transparent to everyone....

Aren't most politicians transparent, though? If you look hard enough, you can almost see right through them.

Dobes Rule,
Good post on this use of religion for political gain. How convenient that his religious views are well known when he decides to make a point and private when he doesn't want to get caught in a religious debate.

Dobes Rule: Outstanding post. Thanks for the heads up. The lying materialistic sociopath has nothing in common with the Bible except being a sinner. He is in cahoots with Pat "I want people dead" Robertson. So there you go. That pretty much puts his faith and beliefs in perspective don't you think? Lets see we have Bush who talks to God and says God told him to go to war in Iraq. Now Guliani wants to be the one God talks to maybe he would murder whoever Pat wants dead. Get a clue there Guliani the ultra con believers may vote for you. The real Christians and those who know the truth will work against your deceit and lies. Your own kids despise what you are. Married your cousin and then said oops. Well there you go. Didn't fall far from your beliefs did you. You would have had to have some in the first place.

Opportunistic indeed!
Quote from the Bible, give the ignorant cons what they want to hear, then commit adultry as much as you want! Among other things. Then all you have to say is... I asked for forgiveness! But God doesn't grant forgiveness to Liberals, just cons!! EGAD!
It speaks volumes to me that the supposed educated cons on here can't see through that! They keep buying the same old bill of goods then coming up with excuses and comparasions to Liberals to justify everything these crooks do, of course "In the name of God"!

He has a few of the quotes intertwined. I think he takes the go forth and multiply as an overriding directive. As a "religious" con you can then excuse his adultery since he is following just that part. BUT if he was a "heathen" Dem then it has to be a crime against humanity since tey dont believe in God and therefore cant be following his word.

The most vocal neocons, when it comes to the bible and to Jesus, are the WORST when it comes to actually UNDERSTANDING or PRACTICING any of it.
They are so clueless about how Jesus lived - they pick and choose what will fit them and discard the the rest - how convenient for them.
Hypocrites ...

I call it vying, pandering and giving lip service for votes.
Those politicans that claim they are on the 'righteous path' now that really kills me!!! oh they're on a path all right, surely not a righteous one tho, unless they've changed the definition of that word too.

Rinaldi100, that is a pretty sad statement. The fact that people voted for it is also a sad statement.
The Abrahamic religions provide the moral underpinnings of Western society. People can argue until they are blue in the face about the evils perpetrated in the name of religion, but the fact remains that the Abrahamic religions and several other major faiths are the basis of morality for almost the entire world.
Secular humanism merely decouples this moral codes from their ties to religion. Proponents fail to grasp the spiritual nature of human beings. If you disagree, try to explain why Wicca in the U.S. or Pentecostalism abroad is growing leaps and bounds? Non-denominationalist mega-churches pack them in...how come? Maybe the mainline churches are suffering declines, but people still want "religion", people still want the spiritual experience.

This article has NO CLUE what that story in the Bible was about!
It was about JESUS being set up by the Pharisees. They set that woman up just to bring her before Jesus. If he was here to fulfill the law of Moses, He'd have to order her stoned, and thus not be such a friend to sinners and besides only Rome could authorize an execution and that would result in the end of Jesus.
If he said let her go, he would not be fulfilling the law of Moses and thus a false prophet. So instead of saying one of the two, he asked for a new jury-- one without sin to carry out her death sentence.
Jesus looked at them-- just like he'll look at us on the last day. He will read our hearts and we will convict ourselves with our own mouths. That's why they dropped the stones and walked away one by one!
Jesus did care about the sin the woman committed, and he was going to pay for that sin by dying for it.
THAT is the story of that Gospel and THAT is the lesson to be learned!

Tessylo,
I think that endorsement has a sinister twist to it.
Robertson wants Judges in the mold of Scalia, Thomas, Alito, Roberts (Dark S.T.A.R.s), and sometimes Kennedy (Making it a S.T.A.R.K. situation!) and from what I have gathered, that is the quid pro quo! Snowflake has probably promised Robertson that that is what he would do if he became a President.

Why is so much focus placed on religion in this election. The focus should be on peace and the economy. It should be focused on the home front and its people. There are much bigger problems out there than how a politician worships or sins. It is a waste of valuable time stick handling around the religion issue.

Fascism has always relied on religious zealotry to drum up support among the masses. You will never find a fascist movement without a religious component.
The Nazis had protestantism, Mussolini had catholicism, as did Franco; Jabotinsky had crackpot judaism; the Afrikaaners had the Dutch reform church.

See this is why we need to get religion out of politics. How can we trust these people. Mitt Romney is on tape talking about gays having certain rights, but now that he's running for president he flip-flop's. Guliani has all those affairs and divorces and now he want's to be a good, Jesus quoting Christian. Please. I can respect someone who sticks to their guns then flip-flop for political means

The most atrocious aspect of Mr. Rudy is his continual reference to the Moslem Fear tactic and his extraordinary leadership during 9/11. I find this, his so called asset quite egocentric and false. Reminds me of Hillary and most other lifelong candidates who most Americans refute. Gosh wake up America and DO NOT vote for a party, either Democrat or Republican. Try another avenue, Independent!! If you still like a mix of some from either party that is what independent thinking is. Trolls vote straight party line.
I will take my chances with Ron Paul or Mr. Kucinich. New, refreshing and no B.S. added. I would like to see them on the same ticket, novel.

StarLord,
Some excellent points. And, some of the very reasons I stop participating in organized religion.
After reading the Bible several times (I took my time to absorb any deeper meanings) it was apparent to me that organized religion and the real teachings of Jesus don't exactly match up. This is because organized religion becomes focused on aspects of the Bible and discounts anything they feel is irrelevant to their "spiritual" view. I call them Bible lawyers. Always looking for the Biblical loopholes that make their interpretation of the Bible the most correct.

The majorities of Christians are only exposed to a fraction of the stories of the Bible and have a minimal understanding of the context of those stories. Even those that profess to teach the Bible are so consumed by the biases they've learned that they become blind to their own hypocrisy.
Giuliani, like many politicians, is a pseudo-Christian. He has his own "personal" beliefs and may go to church, but is still lacking a moral compass.

Sounds to me like gulliani was playing the psychology 101 game. Was that a subliminal message to people that it would be wrong to judge him for his adulterous ways?

Guiliani may have forgotten the end of that verse but it seems to me the writer never read the verse at all. It wasn't Guiliani who missed the point. The point being, let he who is without sin cast the first stone.!

Please remind me about how the Republican Party is religious. What happened to Reps. Foley and Craig? Foley said the alcohol made him like young boys. Craig plead guilty to misconduct in a mens room. Bush is Methodist, but he just honored the Dalai Lama.
Does the religious right know that the Dalai Lama is the head of a religion that is based on reincarnation. That is what the Dalai Lama represents; reincarnation. I'm all for religious freedoms so it doesn't mean a thing to me, but the religious zealots should at least pay attention!!!
I guess the Republicans just say crap about values and the zealots eat it up. If you ask one of 'em something like, "If Bush is a Christian then how come he keeps the war going killing innocent people on both sides?" or "How do you reconcile his stand on torture?" The religious zealots look dumbfounded and then the denial sets in.

Th person who wrote this article is stupid. He don'
t know his own damn religion in the first place and is in no position to claim religious superiority over Rudy. Fundamentalism distorts religion always, no matter what kind of religion it is. As if gays, abortion, and the usual litany of petty christian issues are anywhere near the top of importance right now, there's an illegal war going on, the economyis sinking, and america's reputation is in tatters. Time to throw away the left behind series and start trying to live in the real world not your pseudoreligious fantasyland. It's okay, you can still go to church. But keep your chruch out iof my politics

Come on people. These are politicians. They will take the majority of your precious beliefs that you hold on to in order to make it through your daily routines and embodied it as they stand infront of the light themselves. Funny thing about standing infront of lights. It leaves a shadows. Within those shadows do you see the real person.

Giuliani is just pandering to the Jesus's freaks...but when did Giuliani become the Repug's front runner? Frankly the US is sinking deeper into a bottomless pit. One would think that the Repugs would prop up a decent candidate to bid for the Oval Office in 2008, the very thought of Giuliani for President is obcene.
Is he the best the GOP has to offer? May God help America.

We actually have no record that the conversation between Jesus and the two thief ever took place. Consider that Jesus had been previuosly tortured and then nailed to the croos. The other two had suffered similar treatment.None were well enough to engage in philosophical conversations, less yell them out for all to hear and bear witness. The three crosses rose above the crowd several feet, no one was allowed near the cross while the victims were alive, therefore any conversation that may have taken place between Jesus and the other two beared NO witnesses.
That conversation, attibuted to Jesus is pure myth...ficcion invented by someone who wrote about the cruxifiction and what took place BUT was not a witness to the execution.

You're forgetting that John (The one whom Jesus loved) and Jesus' mother Mary were at the foot of the cross.

And you would hopefully admit that they all expected his return to be imminent? That was the story that was spread. Prepare yourself because he is coming back! Just as today there was constant fear that the world around would collapse. Wicked storms and other natural disasters were certainly God's wrath. If the Gospel was spread after his death it was by word of mouth only, as the Synoptic Gospels were not set down by hand until decades later my the most generous estimate. I under stand your belief in the disciples but for the most part they did not venture far, their sacrifice (death) was enormous but many have died for their prophets. And what prevented the spread of Christianity East? What still prevents that?

I don't see anything in Jesus' writings about homosexuality. Or abortion (at least, not directly). Or working on Sundays. Or associating with people of different skin colour.
Jesus wrote on hypocrisy, and on hatred, and on greed as sins.

"Jesus wrote on hypocrisy, and on hatred, and on greed as sins. Does that mean our leaders have sinned?
Pat Robertson is none of the above, he's perfection personified and is adored by the average Arab. So nice to be an Evangelical leader but the sad part, there are many of them who promote his corrupt agenda while ignoring supposed teachings of Jesus. Extreme paradox for the religious.

Actually, the supposed Jesus never "wrote" anything, Jesus as a carpenter and of course the Apostles too, were illiterate. Few people could read or write in the 1st century, the priest class and some royalty. ( ;

"At what point does Jesus (NOT one of his disciples, but Jesus Himself) state that homosexuality is wrong?"
Well, he tried to, but he had been running around in that white dress of his and going on about brotherly love and when he turned to queer-bashing people just laughed.

Jesus came to fulfill the law of Moses. In it, Homosexuality is wrong.
Exercising control over one's body-- wouldn't that include ingesting harmful drugs? committing suicide? I'm sure Jesus would find either of the two a break in a relationship with Him. That goes for abortion as well: Thou Shalt Not Kill.
How can you talk of "Love your neighbor as yourself" when you think a life inside a pregnant woman is trivial?

'' When does Jesus say "fire and brimstone await those who break even the smallest of my holy laws."?''
How bout a paraphrase:
'You are to be perfect, as your father in heaven is perfect'
all good points, and this is the only one I could even make a pass at.
as for homosexuality, I think jesus was more interested in how men treated each other, not how they, uh, treated each other

He did say if you look at another lustfully then you have committed adultery in your heart. Any action on that lust is adultery.
It's in the Sermon on the Mount.
