Perhaps they had their ASW active sonar's off to "save the whales". Passive systems don't work on Electric sub's only active sonar will detect them.

      Sonar 'may cause whale deaths'

Two months ago the US Navy was ordered by a federal court not to test a powerful sonar system in most parts of the world, because of fears the booming sounds emitted to detect enemy submarines could "irreparably harm" cetaceans and fish.

We can thank God that China only spends 5% of what we spend on our military. If they spent just half as much as we do, we would be the ones of "no significance"...the moniker that bush belittles the rest of the world with.

The big corporations would not allow GW to nuke China. They need globalisation and out sourcing.

It looks like bush may want to rethink his missile defense program, and focus on submarines. I still can't believe this! BILLIONS on defense, and we get this.

Sadly the billions end up in the hands of cronies and never do wells. I fear our defense is so outdated and cumbersome. These folks are still gearing up to fight the cold war. They try to use stealth bombers to combat some idiot lighting his shoe on fire. The stupidity and greed that has transfered the U.S. industrial base to China is self defeating in the long term. But highly profitable for the very short term for some.

Trillions spent in the 50's and 60's on nuclear deterents but Iran scares USA with no nuclear arsenal yet, and they say they have no intention of getting any.

Trillions spent nuclear boomers and attack subs yet a diesel electric sub has put that to shame and they are building a surface navy so what surprises are yet to come with these.

What ever they are rest assured that the pentagon will spend trillions more to combat it and keep USA safe.

Got to keep the war economy booming.

Hey, Austrlaia's diesel subs have surprised US ships in wargames many, many times.

The biggest lesson you can learn from this is simple: nuclear subs are noisy. Diesel subs are much quieter.

Better to find out about the security hole now...than later.

I would say this was a test in real time
