Nov. 10, 2007, 7:40 p.m.Trillions spent in the 50's and 60's on nuclear deterents but Iran scares USA with no nuclear arsenal yet, and they say they have no intention of getting any.
Trillions spent nuclear boomers and attack subs yet a diesel electric sub has put that to shame and they are building a surface navy so what surprises are yet to come with these.
What ever they are rest assured that the pentagon will spend trillions more to combat it and keep USA safe.
Got to keep the war economy booming.

Nov. 10, 2007, 8:10 p.m.Better to find out about the security hole now...than later.
I would say this was a test in real time

Nov. 11, 2007, 4:17 a.m.Think of this for a moment the U boat did the same thing while killing ships they were not even as advanced as today subs it still took a while for us to catch up with their techiques

Nov. 11, 2007, 7:58 a.m.And the world keeps on buying stuff from China to make them more wealthier so that they can upgrade their military. You have to blame the worlds industrial complex to outsourceing their stuff for more profits. Its about time that we start making our stuff again.

Nov. 11, 2007, 9:46 a.m.This is where my tax and Social Security dollars go?
I agree with brothers. Time to stop funding their military while they try to kill US children.

Nov. 11, 2007, 10:30 a.m.It isn't so unusual to be tracked by a submarine, especially if you are not actively searching for one. In the 50's, during an exercise, a submarine surfaced during a night exercises and sailed along in formation with a group consisting of a carrier, two cruisers and six destroyers. It took about five hours before a radar operator on the carrier noted that there was one too many ships in the formation.

Nov. 11, 2007, 11:13 a.m.It is obvious that many junk toys and other crap purchased by Americans is being well spent by the Chinese. Mark this note, our next advocate in the world will be China. Consequently we Americans keep buying without thinking.

Nov. 11, 2007, 11:15 a.m.And this is supposed to be a surprise?
We have been giving the Chinese our technology through outsourcing for years. What makes you bunch of morons think that they wouldn't take what they learned in the commercial realm and use it for defense??
The defense industry is dependent on the commercial high tech industry. The reason our defense industry is so strong is that our commercial high tech industry is strong. Now the Chinese have been given the technology so their defense industry will also be strong. Maybe since we are declining in the commercial realm and they are increasing, they will become the dominate power in the World.
Oh well, we saved a lot of money for a while and what is more important: money or freedom? We made our decision....

Nov. 11, 2007, 11:31 a.m.PRESIDENT BUSH SAYS WE ARE SAFE?
AFTER READING THIS ARTICLE, I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH

I WOULD LIKE TO HERE THE EXCUSES ON HOW THIS SUB
"POPPED UP" UNDETECTED.

Nov. 11, 2007, 12:09 p.m.A few points:
1. Submarines have always had the edge in the stealth vs. detection games. Often in WWII, the first sign of a submarine was the torpedo hitting the ships.
2. Diesel subs are much quieter than your noisy nuke-boats.
3. China is hardly the only nation to have done this. Australia has done it on many, many occasions in wargames, leading to red faces among US brass (yay!).

Nov. 11, 2007, 12:40 p.m.You're all missing one other possibility.....
It's quite possible.. that.... we knew it was there... and do not wish to reveal that we did detect it.. run around and say the sky is falling when in reality all is under control....

Nov. 11, 2007, 1:10 p.m.First of all, if a submarine decides it is going to simply sit on the ocean floor, particularly on electric motors, it is for all intents and purposes invisible to even the most advanced sonar. Secondly, it was a major screw up by the Chinese to get allow the US Navy to get such a good look at the subs sonar profile. And if you read all of the article, you would know that the Chinese also test fired a missile accurate enough to take out a satellie, more indication that we should be spending billions on anti-missile technology. Another feather in our Presidents cap. Sorry libs, once again you this story is obviously over your head. Why don't you venture over to one of the entertainment stories where you are more in your element.

cc2112
Nov. 11, 2007, 1:16 p.m.And another thing, the whole "it's bush's fault for everything" attitude of the libs is really getting old. If you are so unhappy with your pathetic little life that you need to blame the president, who in 2004 got more votes than any candidate in the history of the planet, go live in Canada, or better yet, go live with your friends in Iran, preferrably you could move there before we nuke them

cc2112
Nov. 11, 2007, 1:18 p.m.baddad, has it ocurred to you that the chinese were able to launch a missile that accurate due to the technology that our communist in chief, bill clinton sold to them when he sold out our country? As for closed military bases, wake up, it is a changing world, the military's mission has changed dramatically in the past 20 years.

Nov. 11, 2007, 1:23 p.m.And walmart? do you think only walmart sells chinese made goods? Most retailers sell chinese goods, i bet you have thousands of dollars of chinese made goods in your home. And if you don't like buying chinese goods, how do you feel about paying twice what you spend for everyting? Juust like the mideast, the best thing that can happen to China is democracy, bu oh i forget, most of you libs don't think democracy works anywhere, inluding here in the US.

Nov. 11, 2007, 1:27 p.m.How about low unemployment, how about the largest housing boom in history which has propelled the net worth of the average amercan to all time highs, how about education reform, how about pushing for much needed privatized social security reform, how about pre-empting any post 9/11 attacks on the US, how about bringing the economy and the stock market back from the brink of collaps after 9/11? I could go on, but had you been paying attention the last 7 years, you would know all of this.

cc2112
Nov. 11, 2007, 1:34 p.m.If all of you gutless libs would let the military take the gloves off, instead of whining about abu gharib and how horrible our military is, we could park the 6th fleet off the coast of iran and anihilate it in a long weekend. But no, the enemy doesn't have to worry about collateral damage, we do. As for iraq, if we adopted the tactics of the israeli army, who know how to fight these gutless cowards, we would reduce our american casualties significantly, but the left would never allow that, they don't have the stomach for it.
