Microsoft Corp.'s biggest worry over Windows Vista shouldn't be rival operating systems from Apple Inc. or Red Hat Inc., but remains competition from its own Windows XP, an analyst said Wednesday.

The more bells and whistles you put on an OS the more glitches and vulnerabilities you get. It's like these new cars with all their "features", a simple dead battery and your in a world of doo doo.

Vista is so restrictive as a OS , users are locked into DRM contracts the minute they install Vista .
You buy Vista but you never own it , Microsoft still holds the rights to do what ever they wish to your OS (Operating System) or not do .
Do a search on youtube for "Compiz versus Vista" and watch what a Linux OS can do .

Microsoft tried to violate the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule and screwed themselves. The Vista INTERFACE might be pretty - as long as you don't try to actually USE it. Plus, it's a might HOG indeed. Honestly, Win98 was significantly faster, and worked better. XP has FINALLY gotten usable. And I wouldn't have "upgraded" to XP if I hadn't pretty much HAD to. Open Office has gotten pretty good, so there's just not much reason to use WinDoze anymore - although I do have to boot it up occasionally to use certain programs that don't exist in Linux. There are OTHER programs I probably COULD use, but I've already got a bunch of stuff set up with the WinDoze software and it's easier to reboot than to convert it all. So far...

Vista's biggest problem is not XP but backward compatibility with older hardware and software. Someone I know bought a new PC from Best Buy with Vista. It wouldn't run a couple of the main programs he needed. Best But lied to him and told him that it was not possible to put XP on his computer so he bought a cheaper one with XP on it. Now he runs his software on a slower computer and uses the faster one to just surf the web. However the great secure Vista now has nasties on it.
I'm a computer geek. I was dragged kicking and screaming away from a friendly operating system on Digital computers. I am now an expert and equal opportunity hater of Microsoft and Unix/Linux. MS has no concept of multiuser security and Unix/Linux has no concept of ease of use. AARGH
