I was wondering when I would see the "extinction" of the pay phone.

I think it is a bad idea since there are some people with out cell or when the darn things battery goes dead!

Yea, i feel sorry for the poeple who won't get thier duffs off the couch and get a job. that's just what we need is more taxes to keep pay-phones in the poor "hoods". I make enough money, i should have to pay for an illegal-law breaking-non-citizens heath care too. Bite me. Besides, if you're in trouble and need help, ask the person standing next to you to use thier cell phone, daahhh. you ask the government to do everything else.

Pay phones. I have never used a phone that wasn't a cost to someone.

Boy - looking at some of these comments, I have to wonder just how we all got here. I mean seriously -- all those CENTURIES that somehow got by without cell phones. In fact, without ANY phone at all. Yet somehow people survived to the present day. What a miracle indeed.

There are times that my cell phone doesn't work and pay phones is my only means of communication,,,,, besides not everyone has cell phones and for others, the only phone they use are pay phones,,,,

For safety sake alone I think this is a bad idea.

Maybe they'll be replaced with 911 hotlines?

This was kinda noted already, as pre SBC AT&T (ie, the old AT&T) shutdown it's old Automated Coin Toll System which handled pay phone service nationwide for long distance and cut it off.

It's a sad day, the end of red boxing is near.

When they exit, there will be others to take its place. With everyone and his brother having a cell phone, they aren't needed as much as they were at one time. Maybe people who are calling their drug supplier will need them as they may not have money to pay for a phone. LOL
