FTA:
Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone, the company put her under guard in a shipping container with a bed and warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she'd be out of a job.

At the risk of being attacked by the wimmins lib brigade (but who cares?), a war zone is no place for a woman, despite the pride hard faced wimmin in comfortable shoes and limp wristed PC men now feel about how hard they fought for the right of putting girls in harms way.
I'm not saying she deserved it. no way did she and if it is true, then every man present, whether they took part in it or just were too chicken to stop it, they should all be killed.
but a war zone is no place to send a woman, period.
If my view makes me a sexist dinosaur, then i am proud to be a sexist dinosaur who still thinks that it is a mans role to protect women and part of that role is to stand up and say "no, women should not be there!!".
When i hear that a soldier has been killed, it upsets me. When i hear a female has been harmed, it not only upsets me, it makes me mad at a government and wimmins lib movement which got them to be there
Hate me for caring if you wish. But i say, FU. I wont stop

Vile--the act, the cover-up, which blends misogyny, an outrageous and particularly primitive example of male-"entitlement" protection, and political ass-covering.
Does anyone require further evidence that in the minds of the current administration, our country's interests and those of Halliburton are one?

I'm surprised propeller-libs are so upset. After all, they support countries whose radical culture prescribes stoning and death of rape victims not to mention their favorite ex-president being a serial sexual molestor and accused rapist.

How much lower can we go? I can't understand why the guys at the top wouldn't want every single one of the attackers brought up on charges. Don't any of them have wives, sisters, daughters?
This isn't the first story like this out of the war. There was a story several months ago about the female soldiers being raped by the male soldiers at night when they would need to use the facilities. The women would die of de-hydration rather than chance leaving their shelters at night. One of the commentors said something close to ---that's what you get when you put women with men in this situation.

I wish I could find the cowards that did it. There are some stubby cactuses in AZ that they would fit nicely on. Since they seem to enjoy violence let them enjoy being on the receiving side. Then leave them there to die. Rape is a violent and cowardly crime. These as*holes who did it need to be severely punished as well as those who covered it up.
Well Cheney hows your stock going to look after the hit from this? Pull Halliburton out of Iraq they have completely destroyed their credibility to perform their assigned tasks.

This is the problem. In a society that puts itself above such disgraceful actions then a cover up is often the result. However, i would hope that the offenders are brought to justice much in the same way as those who disgraced our country by torturing prisoners.

I hope this woman sues Halliburton for billions of dollars for the egregious bodily harm they committed on her. Since punitive damages are subjective, I hope the jury or judge depending upon if its a jury or judge trial will once and for all put Halliburton out of business forever.

Legal experts say Jones' alleged assailants will likely never face a judge and jury, due to an enormous loophole that has effectively left contractors in Iraq beyond the reach of United States law.
"It's very troubling," said Dean John Hutson of the Franklin Pierce Law Center. "The way the law presently stands, I would say that they don't have, at least in the criminal system, the opportunity for justice."
This is such BS. No business contract overrules the rule of the land. Never has, never actually will. If the Chinese govt had a contract to with some company to rape sheep, would we say `oh, well they have a contract, there`s nothing we can do`. Or would we say that contract is null and void because it violates the laws of the land? F`in hell this is simple.
If KBR can do this to an American, imagine what they can and are doing to the iraqis with no accountability.

How many more terrorists has the Bush admin, KBR, Blackwater, and all of their ilk created since the invasion of Iraq?
These people are making so much money off the Iraq war, they don`t want it to ever end. Does anyone still believe these people give a flying ykw about peoples` lives? Look at how they treated this rape victim, their own employee? They have no sense of humanity nor any concern for human life. They believe every terrorist created is another profit opportunity.
The incentives are all wrong and the situation will not be fixed until we kick the bums out and hold them accountable.

"KBR has moved for Jones' claim to be heard in private arbitration, instead of a public courtroom. It says her employment contract requires it.
In arbitration, there is no public record nor transcript of the proceedings, meaning that Jones' claims would not be heard before a judge and jury. Rather, a private arbitrator hired by the corporation would decide Jones' case."
This reprehensible conduct by Haliburton is astonishing on one hand and then when I think that Dick Cheney was their former CEO I must admit that I am not that surprised.
Put the bums behind bars; start with Cheney and his puppet, Bush.

No employment contract between employer and employee overrules the laws passed by our legislature. Any body trying to tell you otherwise, is part of the problem. If the contract violates her rights or the laws of the land, it is null & void.

Good luck to KBR in trying to get this case removed from the jurisdiction of the federal court, since I doubt this has anything to do with a breach of contract, because I doubt KBR included a provision of being raped in her contract. Furthermore, the legal system takes a dim look upon exculpatory clauses when they deal with egregious bodily harm of this magnitude if such clauses were inserted in the contract.

...the Dems took sworn testimony during the former Repug Congress from former drivers who pointed out then that they were sent into know enemy kill zones, their buddies died, they were wounded, and KBR/Halliburton are immune from legal action as an instrument of the US government. Here we have drivers killed needlessly in Iraq without justice as an example of what we can expect from the Bush legal system for his women.

This case is totally different than the prior criminal matter concerning the shootings by blackwater, because this is a civil matter. All the complaining party has to do in a civil case is file the lawsuit in a court having legal jursidiction over either the subject matter or the person. In this case, if the defendant maintains an office in the federal district where the lawsuit is being filed, then the federal court in that district would have legal jurisdiction over the legal matter and over the defendant.

It still is a criminal case, actually several criminal cases.
1) the rape itself
2) kidnapping and illegal lock up
3) destruction of evidence by KBR
NONE of these criminal acts is being investigated. Why? On who`s orders?
Do you think Nanci Pelosi or Hillary Clinton would put up with this crapola?

It's reprehensible that a company such as Halliburton can evade prosecution on all levels for all misdeeds and meanwhile move their Headquarters overseas. Yet our government and our citizens continue to pay them outlandish and extravagant no bid contracts which equate to theft.
DICK CHENEY is a crook and most Americans know it. Impeachment is to good for this A**hole, convict him.

Question: what was KBR planning to do with her if she hadn`t convinced one of the guards to let her call her Dad?
Seriously. The company kidnapped her and after getting caught it still disposed of the rape kit. So to what lengths was it willing to go to cover this up?
She may be lucky to be alive.

Everyone who wears or ever wore a military uniform should be outraged about private security contractors (mercenaries by another name). The men and women in uniform owes allegiance to the United States of America and are accountable to the Military Code of Conduct, whereas mercs owe their allegiance to the paymaster and are accountable to no one. And the mercs get better pay than our troops. Whatever money these private contractors receive come out of the US Defense budget and that means our troops are being short changed too.

Likewise, everyone who has ever paid taxes should be outraged.
Blackwater mercs cost six times as much as the equivalent US military personnel, and that is before the indirect costs from losing military to Blackwater and recruiting/retraining replacements is thrown in to the formula.
http://www.topix.com/content/cbs/2007/10/blackw...
"He also disputed the math that concludes security contractors cost far more than American forces to protect U.S. diplomatic personnel. In its report, Waxman's committee said Blackwater charges the government $1,222 each day for a single security contractor, which works out to $445,000 on an annual basis. That's six times the cost of a U.S. soldier, the report said."

Sad to say, I am not surprised!
That is so wrong, a contract for employment does not cover rape I don't think! There needs to be a public court trial against everyone who was involved in the gang-rape. The trial needs to be held right here in the USA.
Since when, was Haliburton put in charge of law enforcement?
Thanks Neo for the headsup on this story.
Thanks Tim!

As a man I find this extremely difficult to understand how these men could do such a thing! These men represent the lowest form of human behavior. I hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law and then the lady turns around and sues Haliburton into bankruptcy!

Enough can't be said about Jamie's brave commitment to take the stand for herself and other victims. My heart and admiration go out to her. She will need the support of everyone that can give it. The contacts are out there, I'm going to have a look.
The 'perps' on the other hand are not that unknown a quantity. They are predators and bottom feeders. The gang mentality is comprised of a few leaders, and a lot of followers. Cowards all!
It is no apology or explanation to state that a warzone is a testosterone enriched environment, where brutes and lunatics can rule the day, if not closely supervised.
The individuals need to pay for their crimes. (In the U.S. they could find themselves in a hostile prison population that would regard them as chicken hawks).
The Corperation(s) that haven't taken the proper safeguards also need to answer for their alleged complacency.

The kidnapping, the phone call, the state dept rescuing her, the persons who performed the rape kit process, the rape kit ownership documentation, her testimony, etc.
It is kind of you to tone down your usual blame-the-victim neocon blerb, but the facts are there in the article.

TimALoftis,
Excellent post. These criminals need to be exposed and brought to justice. That includes everyone involved in covering up such a heinous act.
Neophile,
Thank you for the heads up.
Halliburton/KBR win 80% of the cases brought up in their arbitration process. I'm surprised it's not 100%. A company I worked for (quasi-governmental) until recently has been around since 1918. I found out that they had never lost an arbitration case. Corporations do think they're above the law and our government is complicit in allowing them to think this way.
