Stereotypes and Prejudice at Propeller. Com »
Posted By Spadecaller 1 year, 10 months ago in NewsPersonal attacks, racial epithets, and a host of stereotypes are not uncommon at Propeller. What does it take to stay above the fray? "Prejudices are rarely overcome by argument; not being founded in reason they cannot be destroyed by logic." Tyron Edwards once said. So where do we go from here?

A stereotype is a fixed, rigid, and commonly held notion or image of a person or group; it is based on an oversimplification of some observed or imagined trait of behavior or appearance. Usually based on inaccurate information or assumptions rather than facts, stereotypes are generalizations about people . They do not acknowledge the great diversity of people within a group. Nor do stereotypes consider the present circumstances of the individual. Even worse, stereotypes often lead to prejudicial or discriminatory conduct.
How am I doing with this at Propeller.com? I suppose each of us could as that question too. Would it help?

Exactly, the problem is trying not to fall victim into utilizing such notions or images when discussing critical topics like politics and religion, or even controversial topics dealing with everyday issues.
It's amazing, as well as regrettable, we are the only species which seems to do this, despite the fact we've advanced beyond the technical scope of our ancestors and forefathers. It seems we still tend to stereotype others regardlessly whenever something comes up. Either with everyday or controversial events, we tend getting ensnared within the stereotypical net even when we know better.
And even more disturbing, we exemplify this behaviour on the internet, when we know we'd never act like this in public. Though you might know some who'd make Archie Bunker look like a saint.
The thing is, we need to start keeping an open mind with others instead of making critical, snap judgments than actually examine the genuine facts.
Great article, btw, Spadecaller.

"Usually based on inaccurate information or assumptions rather than facts, stereotypes are generalizations about people."
Stereotypes seem to be a natural phenomenon, a sort of statistically-based heuristic or rule of thumb. For example, a number of studies show that males and females have preferences that can be loosely statistically predicted for a group within a given culture.
Yet, a specific individual may not fit the stereotype, resulting in a misinterpretation, miscommunication, or even injustice. Heuristics can be useful, similar to shorthand notation. They can save time. We need to have a certain level awareness when we choose to rely on one.

I don't think it takes a saint to rise above the personal attacks and bigotry. In fact, I think it's very least a member of Propeller could do, but maybe I'm too optimistic?
The only suggestion I have is: make it a point never to reply to personal attacks/bigotry under any circumstances. Just report such comments as abusive, rate them negatively and let them flap in the wind.

Do you think it takes a saint to explain why comments are in violation of the TOU, when that "saint" is the one who removed them?
I am still waiting for an explanation from you. I assume it will not be anything stereotypical about me being conservative, or about you being the butt of the comments, which were true.
But maybe I'm an optimist.
THIS is NOT a personal attack, this is an attempt to find out what I did wrong.
I will message this to you so there is a permanent record of this comment, even if it is deamed in violation of the TOU.

I notice that if I'm stressed, tired and cranky, I'm more likely to rate attacks/bigotry/needling negatively--or respond in kind. If I'm more relaxed, it's easier just to ignore them, or engage in friendly banter.
Maybe Propeller should offer an attitude adjustment screen before allowing us to post.

'Neocon' is an abbreviation of neoconservative.
It's something they call themselves.
'Liberal' is a legitimate word and its true meaning
is not derogatory. It's something that liberals
also call themselves.
Although they are used disparagingly it's difficult
to agree that they come anywhere near close to what
the 'N' word is, how it came to be, and what it
implies. The weight of history and slavery and
of man's inhumanity to man is conveyed in it.
Necon and Liberal are just teamsport rivals in
comparison.

Neocon and liberal are equphemisms for traitors. Neocons are Zionist traitors, and liberals are communist fifth columnists, despite the collapse of communism and the end of the Vietnam war. And most liberals are only slightly less servile towards Israel than the neocons.
Besides, religious groups are not equivalent to racial or ethnic minority, anymore than communists and fascists. Of course, "Stereotypes and Prejudices at Propeller. Com" never mentioned Muslims. Even genocide is perfectly acceptable, if the victims are Muslims or Arabs, and anyone who disagrees is an ANTI-SEMITE and BIGOT!

I know what you mean. Sometimes it seems like it isn't worth dignifying abusive comments with a negative vote.
Personally I think any member that is using the comment filter (that little pull-down menu at the top-right of every comment thread) deserves to benefit from not seeing such abusive comments. I suggest setting it to "-5 and above" and rating abusive comments negatively.

I see it somewhat differently than Spadecaller and Neophile, both of whom I am proud to call friend.
As many of you know, I tend to confront this kind of behavior when I see it and when I think it will do some good. I'm not the "hall monitor" or "post police" as I am sometimes accused of being, but as a member of Propeller I feel it is my charge to try and keep it as polite as possible. Does that mean that I'm a saint? Certainly not and I'm sure that there have been times that I have been rude or crude or offensive, but I try very hard not to make this a habit.
I report spam, racism and suggested violence and not much else. I would rather confront someone and show them that those of us trying (although sometimes failing) to do the right thing will not turn away.
We all have to try and deal with this as best we can.

That works with those who are occasionally rude, prejudiced, etc., but I don't think it works with those who enter the discussion with the sole purpose of annoying others. Those are best ignored because otherwise they can derail the whole discussion.

The one that gets me is the outright, dripping hatred for Jews. Sure, they dress it up as attacking the "Zionists" or the "Ziocons", but at its root, it's a hatred of Jews.
How can Jews that number less than 15 million people worldwide be blamed for causing so much damage to the billions of Muslims, billions of Christians and billions of Hindus.
I think it's simple hatred. The same as it was 100 years ago, 500 years ago and 1000 years ago.

I know we have been on the same threads and have seen the same dressed up "Zionist" rants that are nothing more than hatred for Jews. "The same as it was 100 years ago, 500 years ago and 1000 years ago."
I have a few that follow me around from thread to thread and while I have them blocked, I see them post their comments directly under mine. They are what some people call cyberstalkers. They are that bedeviled with sick emotions that they go out of their way to locate my stories and to target my remarks.
I don't read many of their commments. I just notice others who respond to their personal attacks. But the story becomes clear, nevertheless. Sometimes, I can't resist (LOL) and I peak. I'm not always successful at restraining myself.

Congratulations for putting up one of the biggest stereotypes around! What blows your argument out of the water is the large number of honest jews and israelis that condemn your statement (see below). Frankly I think you have never been to the mideast or Israel and are a typical american jew who prefers to pretend that the zionist crimes against humanity do not exist.

I prefer honest Nazis to bigotry shouting Nazis from 1984. If anyone is encouraging hatred of Jews, they are. For American Jews and Christians to pretend to respect each other is even more Orwellian. And would you explain why blaming Osama bin Laden and the mythical Al Qaeda for the terrorism of September 11, is not a pretext for anti-Muslim hatred.
Spare us the lies about 9/11 Reichstag fire. No attempt to make the lies plausible was ever made. The 2004 Osama imposter has a nose of such proportions, that someone must have been testing the limits of public gullibility. The 2007 version must have a skin disease. He was probably chosen for his horror movie appearance.

People feel the need to argue when it comes to beliefs.
Not many people want to be challenged with any form of discussion that goes against there perception of being right. Everyone comes to a point in there life where they stop what iffing everything they see. No one has the right to offend a person for there beliefs and ideas about God or politics.

I think this is a good discussion to initiate SC and its good to hear a variety of opinions. [That's a bland start isn't it!]
I'm not so clear whether its possible to make any broad generalisations or even a "code of conduct" which will factor in all aspects of a situation and provide a key to action.
I'm more inclined to suggest a wide range of responses e.g. from zen acceptance to martial arts lightning bolts.
I'm also fond of paradoxical or absurd interventions, flying under people's radar, and a variety of other ripostes which are harder to name.
But I think we should bear in mind that while in real life we can sometimes organise our lives so that we never meet someone again that's not really possible in cyberspace. Even if someone gets banned its easy enough for them to reappear and become one's nemesis anew.
I understand why some people don't like to neg posts or sink stories but don't feel compelled to follow other people's examples.

At the moment I'm feeling more compelled to ask why some of my very best and most respected propeller friends are adding their valuable seal of approval to so many stories which would not be worth the paper they were written on, if they were written on paper, but create a horrible front page at around 1 a.m. US Eastern time when I frequently start my propeller day..
I consider my vote for a story like a seal of approval and there are very few people whom I automatically vote for - and sometimes I withdraw those votes when I have time to look more closely. Usually these are stories by people who are only interested in bringing traffic to their blog or website and frequently offer a tiny loop of information which offers no insights of any kind. i had a brief conversation with pagey about this this morning and I have also occcasionally grumbled to neo. The former wrote me today that there are changes in the works that should take care of this. Hurrah!

I truly do understand what Spadecaller is trying to do with this article, but isn't what he's saying a little stereotypical as well? And don't stereotypes help us in some ways? I've always said that the worst "sin" (if you believe in such a thing) is to judge other people, but don't we HAVE to?
I guess what I'm getting at is that it isn't stereotyping or prejudice that's the problem here, it's that some people are just plain, everyday, ordinary rude. And then there is the inevitable miscommunication or when someone misconstrues what someone else said as well.
I'm not saying that there aren't prejudiced people on Propeller (there very definitely are!), but in the main, I think most of it is people hiding behind the keyboard and saying things that they wouldn't say in polite company.
But, maybe I'm wrong.

Bkumm,
I'm glad you're open to being wrong.
There is a difference in my book (the book of all books) between inadvertently offending someone and triggering outrage with a good topic.
There are those who don't even read the article, accuse me of attacking all Christians, and end up sooner or later attacking me personally.
Generally, people who have not been accustomed to experiencing prejudice and descrimination often have a difficult time in identifying it. No judgment there; just fact.
There's a hell of a lot of hate on the internet, on You Tube, and websites completely devoted to hating African Americans and Jews. Believe me... we have our share of KKK and white Aryans here at Propeller too.
They often are ignored... but they cause a good amount of trouble. I'm a lightning rod for it because I don't hide my ethnic background, but I do get personal messages from others who experience this too.

We here on this site are like members of a community and as in all communities there are people of different social graces. I'm glad that you have brought up this topic for there has been something about proppeler that bothers me, That is thew banning of members. MOst of the memers act in a acceptable way but on some topics some really loose it, My problem with the banning of a member is that none of us know who these people are and what they have seen or experianced. For some of these people this site is sort of therapy and a chance to express feelings whether good or bad. I would like to see the banned person be allowed a chance to be judged by us the members and have a chance to defend themselves or apologise, most of us feel we are open minded this might be a way of proving it. Sometimes when posting people expose a part of themselves which gives the reason for their behavior which is unacceptable. To me these people are just trying to work out issues, and need a place to vent.

Most people don't get banned unless it is for outrageous behavior and even then they are often warned first.
The difference between Propeller and places like Digg is that here we have adult supervision that isn't overwhelming. I've been on this site for over a year and a half and I've seen, maybe one person who got banned who didn't utterly deserve it. And with that one person, I'm not sure that they didn't do other things to get themselves banned. I'm not privy to everything, obviously.
On the other hand, there are a lot of people on here that say some pretty wild things that get let go. I think you're right (and the Anchors and Scouts know this) that these folks need to vent sometimes. Hell, I've done it. But, I've also apologized afterward. That doesn't always happen with Propeller's incorrigibles.

I agree some of the banning in the past, was justified. I have no use for blatant bigotry and racism. When I see the screen names of some of the users on here, I know pretty well what their responses will be on certain threads .... in most cases I just ignore them. Getting a "negative" does not bother me, though I would like the courtesy of a post along with it. The name calling such as "Neocon and Liberal" becomes boring .... we could use a bit less of that type of posting.
In general I see the site better than it was a year or so ago.

I agree. I deplore any concerted effort to silence anyone on propeller. There are many here on propeller that aggravate the hell out of me but I am occasionally surprised when they come up with a really good post. And I know I'm not the nicest guy to argue with but I believe in what I argue about and am passionate about my views. But I would be the last to banish a poster and I can't remember ever blocking anyone. I remember a stretch of time that certain persons followed my posts with a negative everytime I posted. After a while they stopped and I can honestly say I sort of missed their stalking.

Diversity is what makes us all unique. To say that everyone has to take some reason from what might be considered logical to one person, but clearly junk science in the context is when heated arguments start. The whole irony of this article is simply that the author is stereotyping such a diversity that brings everyone back to propeller. If everyone agreed on all the articles points posted here then why would anyone have any need to login and post any comments at all? I agree that comments on articles should remain to topic, but if your opinion on an article is offensive to someone then it is in their ability to go crying to the propeller admins reporting the comment, but really shouldn't take it so personally.

Usually based on inaccurate information or assumptions rather than facts, stereotypes are generalizations about people. They do not acknowledge the great diversity of people within a group. Some of us are willing to see and admit mistakes and apologize; but there are many who are so hateful that they just wait for the next opportunity to namecall and accuse.
I care about the level of debate and I expect people who are Jewish, people of color, and people of minority groups who have suffered greatly in the past and currently to be rightfully sensitive to incorrigible behavior.
A few characters here at Propeller enjoy hounding them.
Hypothetical question: would a member of the KKK be considered an asset to diversity here on propeller?

Spadecaller: I heard that Spadecaller has horns too... Oscar knows someone personally.
Bkuum: I wonder how personally Oscar knows him?
Spadecaller: I understand they have shared some white sheets together.
Bkuum: Come on. I realized after I wrote this that it could be taken entirely the wrong way.
I was simply suggesting that it is possible for a person to have met someone and not really know them. I was not suggesting anything sexual or personal at all.
That's pretty brutal, Spade.
Spadecaller: bkumm:
I wasn't suggesting anything sexual either; I was referring to the white sheets with the holes in them ... you know, the holes they need to see through, when they wear them out of the house at night.

Of course. If lets say propeller banned someone because they were a member of the KKK and expressed their point of view then how is that any different than banning say a member of the NAACP expressing an opposite view of a controversial article to begin with. Now in fairness the words they may choose to express their opinions may be an offset to consider, but then that is what I believe the author is trying to get at by stereotyping everyone that in the spur of a moment resorts to abusive words triggered by an angry reaction to a comment made in the article, someone else's comments, or the whole direction of the article itself.

I think you underestimate or misunderstand why you are unpopular. We seldom see the faults within ourselves that others perceive. Most of us probably have pretty high self-esteem or we wouldn't argue our points so ardently.
I have no doubt that I have faults and probably faults that I do not even perceive, but am willing to listen to everyone's point of view or personal critiques until they reach a point where they show an intolerable amount of arrogance and/or ignorance. But, I make no bones about it that the perceived arrogance or ignorance is to MY standard and not based on what others may perceive.

The author of this story did not recommend banning anyone because of their affiliation to any group -- even hate groups. In fact, banning someone for violating the Terms of Use is not even discussed in the article.
I would consider the fact that those who belong to a hate group like Aryan Nation or an American Nazi group do have one thing in commmon; their association is defined by their mutual hatred of African Americans and Jews. I'm sure they may be composed of individuals, however I think it is safe to say that they all share one basic common denominator; racism and anti-Semitism.
Some may call that diversification, but I wouldn't.

Not in defense of racism , but not necessarily. They could be CIA, FBI, or curios people just simply monitoring events, individuals, or seeing what is the big fuss. That is stereotyping right saying things like democrats all have one thing in common and that is the desire to heavily tax everyone who works hard to make money and give it to people who just want to mooch or that homos (having a more obvious commonality) want the government to give them tax benefits at the expense of others who don't approve of their life styles. Sounds good for the most part, but I suppose their could always be some uncommon exceptions in the groups.

Nice background music SC. I admit I use the neg button somewhat frequently, though I try to use the pos button at least twice as much. The name calling and ad-hominem attacks are such a waste of time. If you are arguing on a board like this, isn't it because you want to convince others of your views? How does calling them names help with that? I'm not perfect of course and have slung a few less than flattering epithets in my time.
Still, I find some of the more heated topics to be enlivening. I really value the people who post sources and links with their opinions.

From what I've seen here just about no one can discuss politics w/o generalizing. It is somewhat entertaining to read sentiments and slams that most people would not say in person (I don't mean the personal attacks, which are a waste of everyone's time and energy). The novelty wears off quickly, though, and only good-will and reason have any lasting impact.
BTW I thought the pos/neg buttons were to note agreement/disagreement with the statement and rather than to judge the appropriateness of the statement. I'll have to ease upon that negative button.

A trendy modern socio-cultural practice is to decry the use of stereotyping. Stereotyping is considered a biased heuristic or judgmental shortcut that conveniently but erroniously evades an accurate and thorough examination of reality. However, somewhere between the pursuit of untarnished truth and the revolt against stereotypes, people lost the invaluable ability to think in terms of generalities and absolutes.

Like stereotypes, generalities are convenient and generally consistent tools for the selection and interpretation of incoming stimulus and information. They're what allow us to make a turn at a green light while assuming drivers going different directions will stop at a red light. They grant us the ability to choose between resturaunts, movie selections, investment portfolios, and even friends. Without the ability to stereotype and generalize, even the simplest of decisions would drain away significant portions of time and energy, and we would cease to lead functional, productive lives. Thus, a pure dismissal of stereotyping and generalizing indicates an inability to consider their value in terms of everyday decisions making .

That being said, I realize that in most cases, stereotyping is most often condemned when it applies to people, either as individuals or as the collective members of a group. Yet, we stereotype people every day, and rightly so. As with my example of trusting drivers at a stoplight to abide by the rules, we assume or stereotype that most drivers abide by traffic laws. When we order food at a familiar resturaunt, we assume that the individuals providing the service will perform to a certain level of expectations. When going to an important job interview, we try to convey an image and message that we believe that the interviewer will want to hear, based primarily on our anticipation of expectations and desirable attributes.

Hello, I'm a new member (in fact just joined today lol) but have been sort of lurking and considering joining Propeller for awhile. The purpose of this comment is two fold: to give a basic introduction of me to the Propeller community at large and of course, to comment on the story. Firstly I just want to give the basics on me: I am a 19 year old college student in rural Missouri and like to think that I am a moderate. Now for the second part of it, where I actually comment on the story. I could not agree with you more, particularly where you state that when derogatory terms, or things perceived to be derogatory, are used then you have immediately lost most of your chance to get through to the person. That said I'm going to go to some other thread now. I have no personal experience to relay on Propeller, at least not yet, quite obviously :D

MY POST WENT ASTRAY... SO WHO READS THEM ANYWAY... we really are a lucky bunch of ducks to even have venues like this, especially timely in the ever evolving mileiu that portends a new age of enlightened idiocy. It's better than tv,and the abuses & attacks are de rigueur and should be taken like 'good' hockey;entertainment value... sex & violence...

I've read some nasty comments aimed at some of my friends here on the threads. Not always sure what the sole purpose of it is. I somehow believe the agitator is exhibiting self hatred and or insecurity. Having said that, the key to growth is listening and talking, especially on topics that are hard to read.

Well for what it is worth the cyber slamming is often nothing more than a mindless childish tantrum and sometimes more informative of the posters real point of view (which may often be derived from the poster's reading and comprehension level ) than we may realize.
As for me; I just think it is just part of the game with the more mature and verbally adept winning in the end.
I've been flamed from the low simmer setting to the super high setting and sometimes other poster's will re-write my posts to 'put it in my face' then ask me to thank them for it later.
And likewise I have done my fair share of slamming against people or organizations that represent, in my opinion, the Super Religious nut cases (either Muslim or Christian) and those that think all or even a few US politicians have our best interests in mind when they go to DC and commit evil self serving acts in the name of Democracy and world Peace.

Hi Jack,
Are you saying it's ok to judge by the group? If you are saying that you are entitled to your views but seeing as how you can't possibly know everyone in that group how can you say that they are scum? Maybe I misunderstood your post.

It is much easier to label people by sterotypes than to search for the good in people. The competitive nature of capitalism prohibits people fom seeing the value of others. The majority of people simply want to be number one and look out for their own self interests. People are too busy competing to stop and realize they would accomplish more if they knew how to work together for the common good.

Zionism is simply the belief that Jews should have their own nation. Zionism is nothing more or less than caring about the welfare of Israel, as you and I also care about the welfare of America. Not all Americans or Zionists agree with the policies of their government.
According to some, all Zionists are the same. There are some Zionists who are rigid, militaristic, aggressive, and extremely reactive. And there are some that recognize the need for a Palestinian State that can exist peacefully with the right of Israel to maintain her sovereignty, as well.
Some Zionist Fundamentalists stereotype all Arabs and Muslims, and do not recognize them as separate individuals deserving of human dignity.
Fortunately, there are more level-headed Israelis that want to protect their nation and at the same time want to live in peace with their neighbors.

On this I am in agreement with you. I know that at times I get a little bent out of shape when what is posted angers me. I studied Hitler and Nazism very hard for a while. One of my buttons is when anybody compares in any way even halfway normal people or groups to these hateful people. The left has many people comparing the present administration to them. What is ridiculous is the liberals are more closely related to fascist and Nazi because they both are socialist concepts at the beginning. I would never attach these labels to liberals and would attack anybody that did.
To me it is very egregious to compare this filth to anybody unless they are mass murderers. And our government no way is involved in that.
The article was excellent Spadecaller.

I do not understand how Propeller places things. It is all a mystery. Sometimes it works and sometimes they end up strange places and other go into the bit bucket.
Oh well. Life on Propeller.
This and the previous were supposed to be at the bottom. Another is under the wrong post. Never had this many wrong at one time before.

Bay leaves are a Jewish cooking ingredient of prime use? New to me & I've been eating Jewish cooking for a long time.
The only place I know bay leaves to be sometimes used is as a pickling spice for kosher pickles
Maybe those two yahoos have been sucking on a pickle too long

Here are just a few bonified American Hate groups. After reading markoller's remarks on page one regarding genocide, this should cover some of the kinds of attacks that some of us encounter on Propeller.

Speaking of this, did you hear Karl Rove's negative smear of Obama? Full of racist sterotyping that's sure to strike a responsive chord with the Repugnican base.
Rove wrote in the Murdoch Street Journal http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119992615845679... oped that "His trash talking was an unattractive carryover from his days playing pickup basketball at Harvard, and capped a mediocre night."
He went on to note "He is often lazy, given to misstatements and exaggerations...."
Certainly looks like Karl has decided the easiest candidate to beat is Billary.

Wonderful write up, Spadecaller. I think this whole stereotype issue has been a problem for all parties involved since the new Netscape was started. And, I'll willingly admit that I was one of the people who would often invoke "those liberals, atheists," etc. But, I believe that this site cannot survive if that is the type of dialogue we resort to, rather than having honest discussions of issues. So, I've been consciously trying lately to be more careful with my words, and even to give some honest thought to the perspective of those I disagree with.
And, of course, if someone of one religion wants to post an article about another, I don't think that in itself should be seen as any more of a personal attack than most other stories. I think most of us submit stories just because we think others will enjoy them, and that maybe some interesting discussion will be generated, but it always seems to spiral out of control quickly.

n@gger, sp@c, k@ke,w@p, m@c, wh@re, ch@nc, sl@pe, guine@, shvatza, shegitzim, sp@de, porch monkey, yid, beaner, injun, redskin, cr@cker, white trash, liberal, neocon, repuke, troofer, democrap
.
do these terms tell you something about the people being labeled or the people doing the labeling? black man or n@gger, you still know nothing about the person, but the term chosen tells you alot about the speaker.
BTW Spadecaller, I find it somewhat ironic that you would post this article considering your monicker. I believe it references the expression "Call a Spade a Spade" which means basically, to call something what it is, but originates from when Spade was a derogatory term for black person. just thought you would want to know.

The personal attacks are what makes it interesting, because we use made-up avatars and names and nobody cares. Why should they? What happened to the good ole days back some 40 years ago when people were people and not like the robots of today. Trying to make people something that they aren't only causes more tension. Can you imagine Kelly Tilghman was suspended for 2 weeks from the Golf Channel for simply chiming in with Faldo and making a remark which has absolutely nothing to do with racism. How can it be a personal attack when the person who is attacking has absolutely no idea who the other person is. Personal attacks are just that. They are personal only when one person knows the other person.

Once again we revisit the perception and semantics game.
It is really as simple as: These boards are vehicles of opinion. Opinions differ. Disagreements arise. Some resort to personal attacks. Personal attacks are bad----MMMMKay. If you don't want yourself to be open to that possibility don't post here. After all as we all have witnessed it time and time again, no matter how many of us proclaim the ills of such behavior it always happens. Einsteins definition of insanity: Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting the outcome to change. Personal attacks on boards aren't going away, either ignore them, respond to them with reason and show their ignorance, or move on it's that simple. MY 2 cents. >_<

I hear what you're saying, but you can criticize someone without attacking them.
As a for instance. As a white man whose family has been in this country for over 300 years I can see how Native American people feel they got the shaft. You know why? Because they did. And I'll even accept the criticism from them that the policies of my ancestors furthered them getting the shaft. I'll accept the criticism that we need to be vigilant to never let that happen again. I'll accept all of that. If you say that it's my fault that that happened and I can't "get it" because I'm white, that I will not accept. That's not criticism that's an attack.
If I say that blacks tend to do poorly in schools in the inner city due to a cultural de-emphasis on education does that make me a racist? Certainly not. If I say that blacks can't do well in school because they're black. That's racist. I understand that it's difficult, but it's two different things. Don't you think?

Absolutely you can criticize without being a racist. But to make sure that you don't pour salt on an open wound, don't make a statement that generalizes like the example that you used. You would have to look closely at why blacks de-emphasize education, and what research you used to make such a sweeping statement. If you're ******ed off at black people, because you stereotyped them in your own mind to be lazy, stupid people. It's very easy to latch on to ideas that support your own impressions without carefully considering the implications.
