Yes, yes, you are correct. But then everyone looks closely at $100 bill notes, or at least I do because I don't see one that often. Who looks at a $5? As to cost to produce a fiver, I haven't the foggiest. Perhaps there is a profit in volume. ;-)

Not so fast - I was a victim of a counterfeit $10 bill. I think it came from a small restaurant as change. Later a clerk at a fast food place (OK I eat out a lot ) and refused to take it. He could tell just by looking at it. Didn't use a pen or anything. So I took it to my bank for confirmation and they confiscated it.

Most situations were the counterfeit money is low denomination and easy to spot is where someone just scans it and prints it. It isn't huge business, but it seems to happen often enough that there was talk of have the printer manufacturers add an algorithm that prints some type of identification information into the image.
I don't know if it went anywhere.
