Jan. 31, 2008, 6:04 p.m.I guess the second amendment will prove its value if we are attacked. The initial wave of chemical, biological and tactical nukes will take out many people but not all of us. When the troops of the invading aggressor try to get a foot hold they will have to deal with snipers and sharpshooters who know the terrain. God help the invaders because they will surely need it.

Jan. 31, 2008, 7:21 p.m.There has virtually no period in our history in which our military was prepared for a catastrophic attack upon us. Even during WWII our forces lacked the ability to repel a major attack on the USA. Especially in time of war our forces are depleted at home. During peace the govt reduces the military while attempting to maintain manpower in overseas posts. It has long been our military policy that the best defence against a major attack on the US is to have forces spread throughout the world in the 'hope' of detecting and stopping the attack before it happens. During WWII we could have easily had Nazi forces, along with Mexican forces attacking our southern border, but the Mexicans rejected the Nazi idea and money offer. In the 1812 war our army/navy was too weak to prevent a British invasion & burning of Wash. DC. Such is our history - but always our citizens rise to the defense when needed.

Jan. 31, 2008, 7:33 p.m.'Rediculous little gun nuts......' - you have got to be kidding me. The USA would not exist if not for the 'Rediculous little gun nuts......' who have protected our shores since the beginning of the very idea of the USA. These 'gun nuts' have formed strong civil defense militias to stand in our protection while our military was protecting us in the warzone. I am retired military, 54 yrs old and do not own a gun (child in the house). But if it looked like the USA was in danger of invasion I would get a gun (not a .38) and protect my family, neighbors and even you - even if I were to die doing so. Look at the Soviet/Afghan war - the Soviets lost to mostly pre-WWI equipted civilians who formed into armed groups against a common enemy. The USA cannot be conquered as long as the 'rediculous gun nuts' exist.

Jan. 31, 2008, 7:51 p.m.From what I read in the story they said that not enough troops were available in case of a biological, chemical or nuclear attack, I just wonder how many troops would be needed in such a case as the deployment of troops for such an attack would be an after the fact move. The only real purpose for troops in a situation such as this would be as a law and order force, and from what I saw after the 9/11 attack most people in your country did not panic. I have to agrre with some of the posts who would like to see your military in your country.

Jan. 31, 2008, 7:53 p.m.OMG...I'm barely over the embarrassment and shame of finding out the phone company pulled the plug on our illegal wiretapping activity 'cause we failed to pay back bills. And now this? Thoroughly disgraceful. Oh, well... Bush and Cheney *did* promise us shock and awe. Eleven more months til this hellish nightmare is over. Wow

Jan. 31, 2008, 9:35 p.m.Maybe, we are partly saying the same thing. But I didn't say "over react". I meant his reaction is one that those who play both sides of the fence want. They want money, period! They are more than happy Bush has left them an opportunity to scare the U.S. public into more spending. But where we might diverge in opinion on is how are we going to pay for all those nice new shiny gadgets that we will be made to believe that are needed.
Now I will concede that preparedness is important and shiny gadgets are part of that. Let's just do it right without screaming that the sky is going to fall and begging the Chinese and Saudis for more money. This is far more dangerous to our health I believe.
Now if you want to talk about spending and the sky falling, I'm right witcha on dat one!

Jan. 31, 2008, 10:24 p.m.Suppose our neighbors to the south, aware of our vulnerability and enraged by the ongoing (and going-nowhere) immigration-debates lose their heads and en masse come pouring across the border.......

Feb. 1, 2008, 1:21 a.m.At the sake of being labelled a "terrorist," may I share with you my experience in the 82nd Airborne? I was not drafted, I volunteered. While serving I was what they called a "lifer."
After JFK was assassinated I had already changed. I was no longer a lifer, I wanted out of the bull***t I heard the politicos speak, but had learned we were being lied to.
After returning from Panama, Central America, where a jumping Brother saved my nasty-ass from being beaten to death on the side of a C-130. I owed him, BIGTIME!!! He lived in Washington, DC. To repay my cool friend, I promised him a night to drink his ass-off, where ever he wanted to drink. Arriving in DC in our Class-A's, I marched him into the first bar I could find. They wouldn't let him drink in any white bar, knowing he saved my ass.
You want us to lay it on the line, but don't think he is an equal? This country hasn't changed...after 50-years.

Feb. 1, 2008, 4:39 a.m.most of the comments here are from people out of touch of living in la la land if there is a NBC attack your f**ked but the best way to protect you and your family is a good set of bio warfare gear gas masks etc the other danger in these circumstances is a good pump action shot gun because looters etc are a bigger immediate threat than enemy forces and if you want the truth no single country has the ability to invade the USA.
