I think this is a good idea when it comes to personal attacks, in my real world of past, attacks on me whether verbally or physically were handled in a very crude manner if you know what I mean. It usually takes me a while to post any thoughts that I have and if I was forced to defend myself through the written medium I stand no chance and really the name calling would accomplish very little. I do have one concern that being I hope this doesn't bring out an element in our community who wish recognition by a different line of reason.

I have those same concerns. What I hope will happen is what others have suggested. If we act as a community against poor conduct, the result will lead most of us to refuse to engage them in further discourse. Their targets are often those who they know are members of minorities. But when we respond with unity against such displays, they may not find that too attractive.

In the past, submissions that tried to show how "bad" a particular member was behaving were generally not well-received by site management. I would suggest if you haven't already made James Marcus or someone else aware of what you're trying to do, that you do so now. It's possible that in trying to do something to "help", that you might end up being accused of trying to harrass another member's use of the site.

Good idea Spadecaller! It really bothers me, when someone is insensitive to another person! Hopefully this will make the offenders stop and think, before they express themselves in an irritating or insulting manner!
Thanks Spadecaller!

Back in the "new" Netscape days, there were tons of offensive stuff. Oftentimes, it's so off-the-wall I found it quite humorous. I don't think I'll dredge up anything that has already been said, but I'll keep your post in mind for future offenders.

SC ...I can't agree with the intent of this story. Dreging up "old" remarks will not be a positive move in my opinion. The only result of this in my mind is more mud slinging and polarization of the community.
In summary...lets deal with a problem one on one as they occur on each thread. If a comment is so out of line report it.

greenmac,
I understand from a few of the people that have recently backed away from particpation on Propeller that they had reported a couple of remarks that were over the line. In fact, one of them resulted in banning one person. However, they didn't want to be in that postion of having to report continuing harrassment from that group; there must be about a dozen of them currently.
Maybe if you were the target of this group, your opinion would differ too...
But there are those who would rather just worry about their own necks and who just don't really want to be bothered unless it affects them personally. Doesn't that sound about right?

Well ....this is hoe I see it....it takes two or more to fight. That being said...sometimes it is best to ignore or keep a level head in a discussion that becomes heated (name calling). To be sucked into the same mode of discussion as the aggressor is what the aggressor is looking for. some of the name callers in my opinion are looking for the fight as soon as they access the post....why give them the pleasure. As well I see some of these as displaced hostility...they have a problem elsewhere and they need a place to unload and make someone else's life miserable.
It takes two to tango man...let them dance alone

Well, here's a question. I'm reading your reply to greenmac
and I'm wondering - Gee, have I ever been reported?
So my question regards the reporting option on Propeller.
If someone reports you as offensive, etc. - does Propeller
notify the offending commentor? Like, would I KNOW if anyone
had ever complained about me to Propeller?

"To put the blame on the recipient of bigoted and foul remarks should be beneath you."
Sc I don't think that was a good interpretation of what I was trying to say, but if you took it that way then maybe you be reading things into posts that aren't there ...due to past attacks. I am not attacking here just making an observation.
"The old saying, "it takes to tango, might be true about pregnancy... but racial slurs and anti-semitic epithets do not need provocation"
I agree that attacks such as racial and others are uncalled for and I imagine most of them come from the same sources. To continue to lose it over and over again with them only adds to their enjoyment. These are not face to face discussions we have on here...it is game for some and you become their sport. They will continue to play with you if you play as well. You won't change them...reporting is all you can do.

Yes a emotional response is what a lot of the 'haters' want and try to get from some posters. With that they think they have won esp if you get post and leave the thread or even the site either permanently or temporarily.
It's not easy to be cool and collected when someone is writing degrading verbage about your heritage, education, religion, intelligence, and etc. when they really don't know you and your personal belief system at all.
It has taken me a long time to learn to count to 10 or 20 after being 'slammed', cool down, get my ducks in a row for a counter resp., the get back in the tussle.
Spade and I had a discussion about this a few weeks ago and while I'll leave his opinion on how to personally go on after a blistering flaming for him to exp if he wants to, I personally believe the best thing to do is give the haters a cool, measured, intelligent resp and try to beat them by that tactic if poss. If that is not poss. back out and settle down and live to fight another day.

Well, I still have not read the article, not planning to.
I would just like to see you take it down a notch (or two), SC.
I realize that may not be possible, based on your personal experience and knowledge of the world. I didn't mean to offend you by saying it (take it down a notch), but I certainly understand how this could be insulting to hear.
That is just what I personally would like to see, a kinder gentler "SpadeCaller".
Btw, everybody knows that Tod is a cracknut.

How cute! Make a joke out of racist and anti-Semitic attacks. Why don't you just post a humorous story about it ind?
I have a lot of good friends and support on Propeller and that is quite positive to me. Those of us who are courageous enough to face real issues should be commended -- not ridiculed.

Now Spade this is what I am referring to. It appears you believe you are being persecuted at times when you are not. a little humour..and this case a valid suggestion is turned into an attack. I understand how much you hate racism and bigots...as do i. Just stop reading something into a post that does not exist. I am attempting to help here...so work with me and others on here.
This is my final post on the matter...contact me off line if you wish...

I'll keep this in mind for the future, I think its a pretty decent idea for the most part. I do have some concerns about how negative it is and I think its best to insure nothing is submitted that is taken out of context, however that could happen. Also the negativity of it is the point, I believe. To hold up those who consistently get placed here and look at those comments and have a general idea of who you are dealing with, so to speak, and perhaps use this to try to get them to change there behavior. It might work, might not work.

Good point Mdiar! That's why each submission needs a link to its source, so that it can be checked.
But there is one thing I know for sure:
"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignoranceâ;;that principle is contempt prior to investigation." anon

You mean Muslims AREN'T good at playing the victim card? They managed to yank "investigateislam" off of YouTube when he exposed al-taqqiya in Islam, focussing on surahs 3:28 and 16;106 that show how a Muslim is free to lie to those they perceive as infidels. They managed to make Israel look evil with such evil brainwashing as this:

or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tneSE6nJiLw
This is just the tip of a very creepy, sinister Islamic iceburg of playing the victim.

Spade, perhaps there's too many guilty people to make this work. Some people fear to post others comments because they themselves would then be placed under scrutiny. This is a good idea, but it fails the anonymity test. It would have to be done totally anonymously.

And while we're at it let's 'clean up' the First Amendment. (sarcasm intended). We should scrap it and add one called 'The Politically Correct Amendment'. Personally, I could care less whose sensibilities I offend. If you can't handle the truth or criticism of your philosopy you need to grow up. Yours is not the only opinion that matters.

So if I said, "Jarheads suck". Then continued to barrage the USMC with insult after insult it's Okay by you? Or are you saying it's Okay to criticize just philosophies? Explain please. I'm understanding you should be able to say whatever, whenever you want. Should people have the right to object or to give a rebuttal? Why is everyone in an uproar about what the President of Iran said then. After all it was his opinion and free speech. Why is everyone angry at the President of Venezuela? So what if he insulted our President, wasn't it just free speech being exercised? Or is freedom of speech only free when it doesn't offend those that espouse it. Another example, big bruha-ha over Obama's church and Minister Farakhan. Why should we care? Those individuals are just expressing their right to free speech.

Well, I'll say this. I've backed off my participation over the last few days because I'm tired of being smeared for "hiding my head in the sand".
I think there is a vast difference between calling someone a XXXX and posting a differing viewpoint or being willing to give someone enough rope to hang themselves. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if we keep these goofballs out in the open they're easier to see. If we bury them in mud then we can't see them until they strike out of nowhere.
There is nothing wrong with opposing viewpoints. If we were to take the TOU (which is there to protect Propeller and AOL not us) literally there are many comments, if not most, that could be in violation. It depends a lot on who you upset. If you upset me, I tend to let it go.
I guess some people just can't let it go and move on. I think this is a waste of time.

You backed off for other reasons, but you lack the humility and the honesty to admit them. Remember, I have not shared the full truth about you because it was said to me in confidence.
Why I choose to honor that in your regards is not for your behalf, it is because I can look myself in the mirror and like the man staring back at me.
You may pretend that you can do that, but I know differently. Remember, I know the truth about you. And, you have failed to be honest about some important things. The image your defend is not real.
You remind me of the man behind the curtian in the wizard of oz.

"I've backed off my participation over the last few days because I'm tired of being smeared for 'hiding my head in the sand'."
Now, who is pretending to be the martyr? Are you really that upset with what others might think of you? Or just me? I guess if you are in a popularity contest in high school that may apply.
What I would be most concerned about is what you think of yourself. If your character and cause is as noble as you boast about, then why would you need to back off. I haven't seen anyone flame you with comments that were foul and inflammatory.
What you can't stand Bkumm is that a few of us have pulled the curtain away and have exposed the oz that you pretend to be.
Give up the act and join the rest of us Bozos on the bus; because you are not the saint that you would want everyone to believe you are.

I strongly agree with that opinion.
IMHO it is better to have the perps out in the mix exchanging 'shots' with whomever than have them hiding, lurking, stalking and or sniping.
