How Obama does that thing he does. »
Posted by: tehranchik 1 year, 9 months agoObama's spellbinding oration earned near-universal raves, including one from establishment conservative Rich Lowry, editor of National Review, and its echoes can be heard in every speech he's given as a candidate for president.

Feb. 19, 2008, 8:20 a.m.Confirms what I have noticed. When the main-stream press stops giving him a pass and asks the hard questions of how all the promises will be paid for, we may see the real direction.

Feb. 19, 2008, 8:59 a.m.Oh my. How dare Obama try to unify the ethnic, racial and class divides of America. Let's by all means avoid this present danger and again elect someone who works to drive wedges between various elements of our society for their political benefit.

Feb. 19, 2008, 9:17 a.m.He does give great speeches and knows how to play to the crowd. But I have yet to hear how he plans on paying for some of the ideas he has presented. I hope that whoever wins, does so on their merrit and not on their charisma or simply because they are Democrat and people are angry at the current Republican president.

Feb. 19, 2008, 9:29 a.m.Obama uses the speeches of our long past to raise, the spirit and expectations of the people's hope for a stronger nation. I have not heard much about the solutions concerning just America and the situations here. In my lifetime practically, is what makes a firm foundation and our country had that yanked away with Bush Jr. I see no practically in giving money to another nation in aid, when it is obvious that our people are loosing everything they own right here. One must have plans to back the good intentions with. We need ways to survive here, industries and a way to stop the bogus inflation. Where are those plans Mr. Obama?

Feb. 19, 2008, 10:03 a.m.I believe Obama will get elected, that his charisma will carry him through. I am less convinced that he will know what to do when he gets there and his idealism runs head-on into the real-politik of power-plays, special interests and necessary compromises and all the other dirty undertow of 20th century politics US style. I feel that some of his supporters ARE blinded by his charisma and their expectations may be unreasonably high. This could lead to a swift disillusionment.
HOWEVER - he looks WAY cleaner than all the other strugglers and he may be able to pull out more stops than he even knows how to do at the moment..
This piece of the article rang true to me:
'In a response to Frank's paper (published in tandem with it), Mark Lawrence McPhail of Miami University warns of the downside of the Obama vision, which he regards as, in the 1994 words of Stephen L. Carter, one that "almost nobody really believes in but almost everybody desperately wants to."'

Feb. 19, 2008, 10:33 a.m."Bill Clinton disarmed race for blacks by inviting them to talk about it. Obama disarms race for white people by largely avoiding the topic." -- More gop lies!
And how do repuglicans disarm race? Fabricate lies about Democrats, that's how.
BTW, I just e-mailed today's Non Sequitur to the RNC! What fun!

Feb. 19, 2008, 11:19 a.m.If Obama is going to make break from racism he needs to attack the laws and organizations that keep it going. Affirmation action is a good one. Who needs it?
