Study: Seattle Crumbles In Massive Earthquake »
Posted by: Aidenag 1 year, 10 months agoWhat happens when a magnitude 9 earthquake rocks the ocean floor in the Pacific Northwest? According to the first-ever 3d simulations of such a "megathrust" earthquake, it could well bring Seattle high rises crumbling to the ground, as the earth shakes as much as 3 feet per second. Cities like from Los Angeles to Seattle could be swamped

Feb. 26, 2008, 10:29 p.m.Yet another reason why i live on top of a 300ft tall hill made of solid rock 5miles north of downtown Seattle. No Tsunami for me. though my 80 year old house will probably crumble.

Feb. 26, 2008, 10:40 p.m.Doesn't the seismic energy focus as the waves move up the hill? As the surface area shrinks as the wave nears the top of the hill, the amplitude must increase due to laws of conservation of energy. The hill focuses the energy. And if it is at a resonant frequency, who knows? Don't mean to be alarmist, just thinking.

Feb. 27, 2008, 4:12 a.m.I've been in a few quakes out here in CA. The worst one for me was the one that was centered by Upland CA. I lived up in Mt Baldy and thought the boulders were going to come down on my cabin. My elevation was 5100 ft. It was about a 6.1 if I remember right. Large rocks fell onto the roadways and trees were falling in the forrest. Frightening.
I can't imagine a 9.0. Although one of my seargents in the army was in the massive quake they had in Alaska. From what he told me he couldn't even walk during the quake.
