US Quietly Breaks UN Treaty »
Posted By Neophile 1 year, 8 months ago in NewsOn Friday, at a United Nations meeting in Geneva, the United States broke a series of legal promises. Keeping those promises would have proved extremely embarrassing to the United States government by pointing out that human rights abuses are being committed here at home and at US military installations abroad.

JOEY EVANS ~
It's impossible to even pretend that we lead by example.
Even when that concept was believable.......we weren't
perfect - but it's just a slogan now. I have been horrified
to hear people give up on trying to defend some of our most
heinous acts by coming to the conclusion that we should
"just nuke them all and get it over with" ............
Doing the right thing - having the proper attitude about
other nations, religions and peoples is just too complicated?
It's such a cop out - like that commercial with the big red
"EASY" button.........let's simplify & nuke - nuke - nuke!
This situation is totally tragic.

What does the Good Book say"the sins of the Fathers are visited upon their children"
The 60's to those of my age have many 180 deg views, from Nam war vets to hippies, and all kinds in between and we still think "those were the days"
So are todays woes due to us baby boomers? Did we forget the 60's so that in the 70's and on we could chase the American Dream and work 100 hours a week so to become millionaires.
I know that the morality of our youth is not the same as my youth, nor are they as gullible as we were but it also seems to me that American Idol has more pull than the bull that is todays politics.
The bull was always there ie Tricky Dick, but it wasn't feed to us and we took it like the bull that is now shoved down our throats and we do nothing
Cheers to all

Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me;

Here's a hot one to add to this discussion:
US Cluster Munitions Policy
The policy looks good on paper, but more action is needed from the US to rid the world of cluster munitions.
By Doug Tuttle for CDI (25/02/08)
http://www.isn.ethz.ch/news/sw/details.cfm?ID=1...
We - the U.S. - supply these cluster bombs with agreements
as to how the Israelis are allowed to use them. In fact,
during the 1980's RONALD REAGAN banned the sale of cluster
munitions to Israel for SIX years because the IDF used
them against civilians targets in their 1982 invasion of
Lebanon - breaking our agreement.
During the last three days of the 2006 Lebanon war, when
the ceasefire was known to be imminent, the IDF fired over
ONE MILLION bomblets into southern Lebanon. During the
entire war appx. 4 million were fired and U.N. officials
say that at least one million of them are unexploded in
the southern part of the country.

The use of cluster bombs against civilians should absolutely be prohibited. I'm not even sure that they should be used at all as they sit around forever and are indiscriminate killers and maimers years later.
Not only shouldn't we sell them, we shouldn't use them.

Yep, we're "off the reservation". Is anyone surprised by this?
We've been quietly breaking treaties for a couple of centuries now. Don't forget, we're the 'good guys'. Have another beer, watch the game, and finish it off with HBO's "Real Sex", before you go to bed.
Sweet dreams...

Good question. I believe we were a more courteous
with fellow Anglos.I think it was a little more iffy with
Native Americans and our neighbors south of the border -
Cripes! What we did to Hawaii was criminal!
The concept of Manifest Destiny always struck me as -
"they're not using the land to it's full potential
(in OUR estimation) so, if we've got the ability (might)
to take it..............we should." I didn't like it
when I read about it but time passes, the history books are
written and, as with so many things, the ends seem to
justify the means - no? Take away the pomp and circumstance
and the suits and you've got greedy savages wresting away
whatever they can from the rightful owners. The only thing
that has changed is the law of the jungle didn't require
reasons - we're civilized, so they dream up "stories" to
tell us as to why we HAD to do it.

Our current administration has reversed years of progress in race relations at home and throughout the world. The upsurge of racism and bigotry towards most minority groups has become quite apparent and often is even a source of pride by some political and religious factions.
Thanks for posting this article, Neophile.

Even tough I'm totaly against current US politics and gouvenrment, I do have one remark:
Are things happening in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, etc.., racisme?
Is the fact that those people are from an other race not secondary?
They are illtreated because they are ennemies and (some, not all, far from) terrorist.
The fact they are a different race is coincidental.
That most terrorist are from those races, is also coincidental, and checking those people more, knowing that most of them are NOT terrorists (e.g. at airports) should in my opinion not been seen as racisme.
The same way, if we look for members of the KKK, we will look at white people, not at black, azian, arabs ....
That being said, I not commenting here about racisme inside the US (AND other countries) society. That's another thing/debate.
Also, I do condemn what happens with those prisonners above, on grounds of Human Rights and Geneva Conventions

I won't defend racist policies of the US government.
However, the US military is one of the least race conscious employers out there. When we're not at war it can be a fine career path for minorities. They have a much greater chance of rising in rank in the military then getting promoted in most corporations.

From the article I referenced above:
http://www.isn.ethz.ch/news/sw/details.cfm?ID=1...
"Among those not participating in the meeting are the United States, Russia, China, and Israel â;; all producers and stockpilers of cluster bombs that oppose such a ban."
Those are some pretty big dogs that chose - like the U.S. -
not to participate. Kind of a scary twist on the Golden Rule. Is there no worry in our civilian population that we refuse to give up the nasty weapons WE can use and grant our "friends" the okay to use them as they choose, as well?
What's the worry - right? Friends forever!

Although what you say is true - I don't think it will
matter. The scary part is, there's no logic allowed in
war. How many Japanese soldiers were actually in Hiroshima
or Nagasaki when we obliterated them? How many Nazis were
there in Dresden when we fire-bombed the whole place? How
about the "free-fire" zones we created in VietNam? That was
ANY living creature - including water buffalo.
Nobody is going to stop and ask if I voted for Bush. The
fact that ANY American will be considered the enemy - and
that's if they use the rules WE have established with our
own behaviour - will mean any treatment of American
civilians would be justified. Our own government has
gutted Geneva - they seem to believe there is no case
to be made FOR human rights.

All those who think Cluster Munitions, Depleted Uranium, and other "Fire and Forget" crap is such a good Idea...their families and themselves should be in a huge area surrounded by the weapons they are supporting they got two choices...find their own way out...or agree to ban these weapons...
Wouldn't THAT be one Helluva reality TV series???
Oh...I forgot the best part: they are restricted to the same health care given to our veterans returning from the Middle East!!!

Even finding their way out is not realistic because the people who live in countries where these weapons are used have nowhere to go. I think the choice should be: live there (including cultivating the contaminated or mined land) or agree to a ban.

Every time I sit and watch the results of another primary come in I know that the American public is the society that I still admire. The people of United States are standing up and saying we care, They care about the direction of their country as well as the actions that are being carried out in the world in their name and like most who have posted on this story they are fed up. I am not sure how your country is going to reverse all the mistakes that have been made in regards to the treatment of people around the world as well as some in your own country.
I'm sorry if I sound like I'm going on like a nut case but the people of the world and your country are not stupid and when will those in charge realize this fact. I will also put blame on those who make a point of finacially supporting both parties so that the cash flow never stops.

Big deal. To hell with the UN. The best thing that could happen is the U.S. tells the UN to get out of New York now. And if they delay, then we can hire Al Queda to fly a jetliner into the UN building and see if it collapses into its footprint like the Twin Towers and Building 7. What the F was that all about anyway? Building 7?

Wont let me reply in normal space so I am adding it here. Does anyone see ANYTHING wrong w/this?? Makes no sense-has no details, names places, a/t. Like saying "a guy walked into a bar today & said/did stuff other people may have found offensive" & all the little people start running around in circles. Its so in to rail against the US. What a cool guy you are. Raging against the machine. WTF? Some dude sitting in his basement in boxers thought this up & posted it as news? So tired of the US-bashing. Terrorist huggers left us ripe for attack before & will again. People feeling like rallying against the gov't makes the sooo anarchist or something. Well what if youre wrong? Think ab. that? Ugh. So glad to no longer be in the mil - put my life on the line people who are clueless high & mighty over their cluelessness? Heck no. That & the whole being tired of other chicks checking me out thing. Long story. Stop trying so hard.

I ran out of room but I was trying to say that tree hugging ACLU hippies & those type are always trying to defend the poor innocent suicide bombers & have some kind of mania that makes them feel if they decry the Big Bad Gov't ooh they're so rebellious. At least find out what the HECK youre talking about 1st. Where do you people even get your so called facts? Man this is so sad. If youre talking about the Gitmo detainees, just about anything thats happening to them there is less miserable than their average daily lives in Tehran or Azerbaijan or wherever. And they LOVE it when you guys rally in support of them. Love it. It gives them more strength & determination (& ability) to hate & kill & pass those values on to their children. If you only knew what your liberal talk creates...

Lets simplify things. A bunch of people declared war on the US by bombing US Embassy s and the World Trade Building. Should we report Human Rights Abuse? Sure. As we place them a safe 6 feet below ground. If the UN got off it rear end and did something that made sense instead of spending money and having sex with children as well as taking bribes, they might be worth listening to.

Gee - sound's like Congress. Well, it sounds like congress
WAS - 'cause those bribes and sex scandals were ignored and
actively covered-up when they were actually going on........
by the party of TRADITIONAL VALUES. What would we do without
Conservative Republicans and Neocons for our moral compass?
We need to acknowledge - officially - our existing third party HYPOCRITANS!!
"Should we report Human Rights Abuse? Sure. As we place them a safe 6 feet below ground." Did you really say that?
I'm hoping that was a bit of tough-talk ........
you wouldn't REALLY want us to be that type of nation??
